Cheesecakes come from a can. They were put there by a man in a factory downtown.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

The film of “The Da Vinci Code” honestly does a masterful job of maintaining movement in a script that’s 90% exposition, it’s a valid experiment like the OG “Fast and Furious” being 90% car chase. Its main problem is the evil monk is excessively hot. Makes no sense. Ruins the whole thing.

Y’all overreacting, Yglesias is merely testing Oscar Wilde fan fiction.

Yes well it does require things like “empathy” and possessing a basic understanding that all of our lives are interconnected

Really liked the Adam Scott Irish haunted house film “Hokum” - best type of genre writing, uses the constraints to be original, instead of adding gimmick to formula. Visually beautiful and well done all around but the writing stood out.

Something fishy is going on: voters have voted in multiple cities as if in unison. Like they coordinated what day to vote on. Just decided, even though they hadn’t voted on the previous day or the day before that, that suddenly today was the day to vote. GTFO.

Quelle surprise 🇧🇷

Hearing Kabas on NPR felt like some kind of electoral victory, like the journalist candidate I campaigned for to be The Media unseated the incumbent Consultant Man and now gets to be People’s Talking Head.

On the Media@onthemedia.bsky.social

An attempt to draw negative press at a rally for Abdul El-Sayed ended up working in the Democratic Senate candidate’s favor. @marisakabas.bsky.social revealed the identity of the heckler, who has ties to Christian nationalists and formerly worked for Sen. Hawley. lnk.to/onthemedia/b...

I’m aware this is the same feeling Charlie Kirk fans had. Doesn’t mean she or I are better. She is though, and therefore logically I am too, suck it.

I feel exactly the same about Lula winning as Biden winning. But for real: do you get what was just averted? Remember what Trump’s defeat was actually like?

As a history guy who hasn’t mastered contemporary E Euro politics, I would love to see Hungary use this guy to correct the association with the Huns. They not Huns. They’re Magyars. Or they’re a confederacy of 10 nomadic tribes inc the Magyars. Anhoo its a more badass name than Attila imho.

Hungarian PM Péter Magyar: "I have just spoken by phone with the leaders of the Students List, who won the elections in Serbia, to congratulate them... I assured them of Hungary’s support. I was delighted to hear how much strength our victory in April had given them during this difficult struggle."

I know culture war insults are cringe and unhelpful but I don’t mean this as an insult, I just am naturally now thinking of Republicans as “cheesecakes” in my mind.

I also am mad about the ‘Musk’ film’s censorship, but the Latin-ness of ‘censorship’ reminds me that we righteously angry people have been steady winning for many centuries on this front. Barbara Streisand? How about Cato the Censor? What about the guy they named “China” after? Confucius say “lol.”

A bit of a turning point. Creators of all types of media are no longer allowed to criticize America's wealthiest people.

Another Canada-hating American trying to make Italy fascist. Thinks he’s a techno-visionary, probably eats brisket with everything inc pizza, insults disabled people. Wants to “build worlds.” Chilling.

I’ll gladly accept whatever guff comes my way for this, but I’m hoping the Democratic nominee in 2028 is, political questions aside, young and aspirational. If you’re younger than, say, 30, you might not remember how magical election night 2008 felt. Civic pride doesn’t begin to describe it.

My favorite episode of Scrubs is the one where Zach Braff gets cucked by Tara Reid and “The Soup Nazi” in a Seinfeld cross-over (Season 3; Episode 21)

Books, Zatarain’s Red Beans & Rice Dinner Mix, jerking-off, improv comedy, electric razors, a McDonalds French fry stuck in the backseat of my first car.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen stay exactly the same in your lifetime? I say rubber bands. They were fine back then and they’re fine now.

Just saw an ad by the Republican lawyer Saritha challenging Letitia James - lol, but still: the clip of a sleeping homeless person is whack. Did he/she sign a waiver? Are they an actor or is it not even a person? There is no good answer to this question.

If I were the El-Sayed campaign I’d lean-in to him having the coolness of cucumbers, which Michigan is #1 in. That and being “soy.”

Fall is here. So we can finally talk about this serious topic... Jonagold vs. Honeycrisp apples.

I don’t know when WSB wrote this in the copy I’d sent him, except that it would have been over 28 yrs ago, on July 31, in Lawrence. Leary had encouraged him to read Neuromancer and he’d liked it, which thrilled me. We hadn’t yet met, and wouldn’t for a few yrs.

Adventures in Tech-Bro History: the Italian inventor of the radio (Guglielmo Marconi) was the great-grandson of the Scott John Jameson who founded the famous Dublin distillery. Jameson was still the world’s #1 whiskey when Marconi sent the first message across the Atlantic from England to Canada.

Fun facts: the White Russian (and its original variant the Black Russian) were named by an anti-Russian Belgian during the Cold War, but today Russia calls them that, and Russia also has its own “Poor Russian” which is vodka, sweetened condensed milk, and a dash of pineapple juice.

Nicholas Slayton@nslayton.bsky.social

I have acquired a giant Russian cocktail guide from 1999. I am so excited.

It’s actually more like the condensed milk and pineapple juice are overlapping substitutes for normal milk and kahlua. If you have kahlua you don’t need pineapple and if you have milk you don’t need condensed milk unless you also don’t have kahlua.

Pornography, building safety, weed in general, cocktail mixology, access to Mexican food, bidets, race cars, the population of snow leopards.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

One: some kind of nincompoop. Two: a fully cucked cuckoo. Three: girl, it’s plain see, The bourgeoisie has bent the knee, and, Four: repeat steps one through three. Five: make you vote abundantly. If ever I believe my term is done, Then I start back at one.

My only problem with ‘cruel and unusual punishment’ is the cruel part. Wish more punishments were unusual and just. Poetic, even. That seems more natural. Don’t need to trap Elon in a burning Tesla, just banish him like Napoleon to Epstein’s island and let him speak to no one but an offline Grok.

Fun facts: the mythical King Midas was a real guy who was some kind of gold freak in western Anatolia shortly before money was invented there, and he more believably is also said to have gone mad as he tried and failed to prevent people calling him a ‘jackass’ (about musical taste, apparently).

I’ve heard people say “there isn’t a hypothetical alternative to LLMs stealing content, they need to do that to survive” and I think this is false. The more human-type solutions it has (unlike math solutions ), the less likely it is to help you find something new.

Sheepflame@sheepflame.bsky.social

I don’t even want it to HAVE Anne McCaffry’s solutions. The fact it stole her work makes it harder for me to ask questions purely about botched physics.

Chuck’s super right but Imma quote him to make a point he’d likely disagree with. It’s also a corporate trick to make those of us who hate it disbelieve its minor non-creative value. To defeat them we must begin to define what non-creative stuff it is for, and shame those who misunderstand that.

I think Chuck and I agree than anyone who asks Clippy “how should my character react to this situation?” should be stopped. Their book killed with fire. It’s just how, and I think leaning into defining it as a good tool for S-tier autocorrect is the way.

Absolutely zero chance it goes away entirely. What regulated, and socially norm’d LLM things still exist? Imagine a bunch of psychopaths were trying to get you to sacrifice your own child for Zoom/Skype. Obviously not. But also - we wouldn’t ban teleconferencing, that’s not how we’d stop Devil Zoom.

Here’s an LLM non-creative example: I’m writing a sci-fi world where I have personally invented weird orbital mechanics for a planet. I have an LLM tell me which of my personally-invented alt ideas violate physics the most. I do not ask it for solutions, because I don’t want Anne McCaffrey’s.

Fun fact: India has been playing soccer longer than chess, which they invented. They gave chess to Persia but lost it for centuries, got it back from Mughals. Meanwhile, before the Mughals, they got soccer from the Portuguese settlement of Bombay.

Disclaimers: I assume some Indians were playing chess while it wasn’t a national thing, and soccer wasn’t properly codified for another 200 years when the Portuguese brought ball stuff to the coast where it actually mainly caught on in Goa. But that did become soccer there.

People still think Mariah Carey just woke-up sounding like that one morning, smdh. You think she dresses-up like a 4th-C Greek Saint every year because she wants to!?
