"New long-term fossil fuel investments risk pulling in the opposite direction. We want African govts to build on the continent’s #RenewableEnergy potential rather than lock future generations into another cycle of dirty energy dependence,” Ajra Mohamed, Climate Action Network Africa #EndFossilFuels

Africans Rise UK@africansriseuk.bsky.social

Climate campaigners in Nairobi are asking African govts to accelerate investment in renewable energy & avoid locking economies into decades of new fossil fuel infrastructure. This comes amid growing investment in #FossilFuels in Africa + worsening extreme weather events www.kbc.co.ke/climate-advo...

The @ipcc.bsky.social is in a crisis - with countries fighting shadow wars about the functioning of the Paris Agreement at IPCC panel meetings. These discussions should be moved to their right arena, the COPs of the @UNFCCC. 1/n www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Our collective ability to deal with climate change relies on fruitful dialogues between policymakers and scientists. Many countries + the EU, have established climate councils to help with this. But crisis in the IPCC mothership is negative for everyone aiming to find good climate solutions. 3/3

Windfall profits tackle the symptom not the cause, what we need to do is to prevent windfall profits in the first place - by price controlling oil and gas.

On 21 October the government approved gas production at the Jackdaw field. As health professionals, we regard this as a matter of patient safety. Jackdaw is a health decision, not only an energy decision. Our position statement 🧵

2/ We ask the government to: • Publish a health impact assessment for Jackdaw and Rosebank • Remove policy costs from electricity bills now • Fund a move off gas cookers and heating, prioritising children with asthma and the most deprived areas

4/ The GMC expects doctors to raise concerns when patients are at risk from “policies or systems”. Does that duty stop at the hospital door, or a GP surgery? When patients may face serious harm, our ethical and professional duties are engaged.

5/ In patient safety, removing a hazard is always preferred to managing its effects. Cheaper electricity, warmer homes and moving households off gas all reduce exposure to the hazard. Approving more gas production does not.

6/ Jackdaw’s owner says it will “not materially influence” climate change. We disagree. Climate health harms are cumulative, and every major source of emissions adds to them. Our concern is the direction of travel.

8/ The Energy Secretary has confirmed Jackdaw won’t lower energy bills this winter. For patients in cold, damp homes, lower bills are what matter most.

Electric motors are so much more efficient that internal combustion engines that even on fossil fuel power they still cut emissions substantially. Run them on 100% renewable power & the impact is even greater. Switching to renewables saves money, improves health, environment & climate. 🧪💡🔌☀️💨💧🔋

Jan Rosenow@janrosenow.bsky.social

NEW BRIGHT SPOTS: Even on 100% gas power, heat pumps cut emissions by ~48% and EVs by about half. The authors of an “electrification doesn’t cut emissions” paper made a series of compounding mistakes and used misleading assumptions. Here's why. janrosenow.substack.com/p/heat-pumps...

You can't clean up plastic once it's in the ocean You can't suck up fossil carbon once it's in the atmosphere You can't (quickly) regrow a forest once you've destroyed it Destruction needs to be addressed at source. It makes no sense to just damage everything and try to fix it afterwards

therevelator.orgWhy The Ocean Cleanup Hasn’t Solved the Plastic Pollution Crisis • The RevelatorGlobal problems are rarely solved by one person or invention. The Ocean Cleanup didn’t work, for the reasons experts said it wouldn’t. What can we learn from this?

Also, air quality is massively improved, we fixed the ozone layer, solved acid rain and broke the link between economic growth and fossil fuel use (to some limited extent so far at least).

Where to start? The world is way better than the 1980s. Women can work + have kids without endless debates about working women being bad for families. Divorce is totally acceptable, without weird moralising. No smoking in public space, child abuse, murder + violent crime in general is way down...
