it's time for journos to start asking Johnson meta questions "Speaker, on 5 occasions last week you said 'I haven't seen it' when asked about news events w/big implications for public policy. Do you ever read the news, and do you agree it's problematic for the Speaker to be so woefully uninformed?"

The notion that crime and the economy were so bad 2023-24 that Americans reacting to objective personal material conditions had to do a fascism does not hold water. If material, why would it be disproportionately white? Do you think nonwhite people don't experience crime or economic challenges?

One of the reasons I *do* fight with people over the Fairness Doctrine is that I have a vain hope that people will understand that there is no magical solution to authoritarianism. "If only we had Law XYZ" is lazy.

My simple guide for anyone wanting to make future comments on the FD are please don't. We have serious problems and beating this dead horse doesn't seem to serve any productive purpose.

I don’t intend to diminish any lived experiences in the modern day being a person of color…but does anyone think it’s more dangerous for black people to protest today than it would have been in the 50s or 60s?

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

It’s incredible how easy it is to get people on Blue Sky to argue that challenging the Trump administration is too dangerous, just by framing it around privilege and not the need to resist encroaching authoritarianism.

Anyone who believes the average Democrat, or *average* Republican, is blood thirsty needs to touch grass. People like Loomer are the threat. They need to be defeated by ideas and political action. Don’t get me wrong, there are rabid maga out there. But not as common as you’d think based off Twitter.

The FCC Chair saying “You can deal with Kimmel the easy way or the hard way” is the very definition of a chilling effect on speech, and a good indicator the First Amendment is a dead letter in the Trump regime. Free speech is dying in America and none of our free speech warriors seem to care

The bar gets lower every damned day

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

KAMLAGER-DOVE: Dylan Roof, who followed white supremacist propaganda, murdered 9 Black parishioners in 2015. Do you deny this? PATEL: I'm sorry. Dylan Roof? Can you give me more information? KAMLAGER-DOVE: You're head of the FBI

It is genuinely humiliating as an America to have this sour, cowardly, narcissistic lout represent us and to know that so many Americans applaud conduct like this. Just deeply embarrassing.

REPORTER: How much wealthier are you now than when you returned to the WH? TRUMP: The deals I made for the most part, other than what my kids are doing - they're running my business - were made before. Where are you from? R: Australia T: In my opinion you are hurting Australia right now. Quiet.

While you have First Amendment rights, free speech is not unlimited. Certain categories of speech are strictly prohibited by the US government: -incitement of violence -defamation -child pornography -counterfeiting -any form of criticism or mockery of Charlie Kirk, specifically

Michael reposted

The thing about Charlie Kirk is that lots of terrible people get murdered and it's still a terrible crime. Murdering him was a terrible crime. And he was a terrible person: a repulsive bigot who openly denigrated millions of Americans because of their race, sexuality, etc.

MAGA are moral cowards. This disgusting behavior was predictable when the news of Kirk broke. His killer is responsible for the waves of violence and malice rippling through the country.

The free speech activist who built a list of professors he worked to get fired for their speech must be celebrated for his support of free speech, and anyone who quotes his speech accurately in context will be fired and/or face state punishment by the champions of free speech, do I have that right?

Ossoff: Absolutely RFK JR should resign. He should have never been confirmed to begin with. He is utterly unqualified. This is someone who has embraced every piece of quackery and pseudoscience that he’s come across.

I think "media attention inflation received" is separable from "actual inflation," which is why inflation narratives remained a panic even while inflation returned to normal. All that matters what people are paying attention to: crime, or inflation, or caravans, or ebola, or scandal, or egg prices

Ryan G. Parsons@parsonslab.bsky.social

You don't think inflation, and the media attention it received, was a driving factor?

Solar is no longer “alternative energy.” It is the energy of the future. America risks remaining a petro-state, clinging to the past, instead of becoming an electro-state, embracing the future.

Trump doesn't care. RFK was a "troll the libs, f-you to everyone" choice that put a compliant, if weird, guy in the Cabinet. RFK destroying American health is just a side effect that Trump couldn't care less about.

LindyLoo@lindy88.bsky.social

What I done get is why? Everything Trump does is a response to a personal grievance or a way to make him money. I don’t understand the motivation to dismantle public health system.

“Going crazy from the internet or the television” is an incredibly widespread condition but many people still insist that our new fascist politics either reflects “how they always were” or must have deep roots in the political economy. Buddy it’s just YouTube poisoning

Fyodor@fyodor.bsky.social

How many people in your real life that since 2018 have become really angry about America's global dominance or some crap. None. Now how many people do you know who have gone crazy from the Internet? I know plenty in addition to well known public figures like Musk or Rowling.

One of the more depressing features of the past decade has been seeing how quickly and easily the right abandoned the genuinely good principles it once pretended to care about. Free trade; federalism; free speech. They jettissoned everything they had a point about & kept all the loathesome bits.

George Takei@georgetakei.bsky.social

Trump and his MAGA movement have mastered the art of projection, accusing the left of doing what they themselves have done. But now, Trump has taken that to a new level, becoming the manifestation of an oppressive state that the right has always warned against. So why aren't more sounding the alarm?

God fucking damnit this is so very true, and so very irritating

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

If Obama or Biden had said this, it would be rightfully understood as them arrogating dictatorial authority to themselves, it would be the only thing anyone in the media or opposition would talk about for a year, and it would probably end their presidency. For Trump, it’s literally just Tuesday.

White male lawmakers are controlling a Black woman in Texas, detaining her in an enclosed space until she signs a piece of paper agreeing to a 24-hour police escort. Gosh, I wonder what THAT sounds like? I will NEVER forgive the folks who voted for this man. NEVER.

It’s actually painful. The irony is physically painful.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Yeah it's really insane how the right switched from "we have to ban masks everywhere because N95s are scary" to "actually, what if we made terrorist-style face masks the de facto uniform of armed federal thugs? wouldn't that be awesome and scary?" in like four days

India’s prime minister tried his best to be friends with Donald Trump. But the US president’s 50% tariffs on Indian goods has upended more than a decade of careful diplomacy, and handed a victory to China.

Meiselas: We’re seeing a global realignment. Trump touts fake deals, but countries say there is no deal. Modi may meet Xi. Australia’s buying warships from Japan, Canada’s buying planes from France, and Europe is turning away from U.S. weapons. The world order is reshuffling.
