An amazing crescent moon earring (lunula) found in Köln (Cologne). Its base material is gold, set with pearls, glass beads, and a central gemstone. The dark-blue gem (niccolo) depicts Eros tormenting a butterfly with a torch ( the pain of love) and is a reused ancient Roman piece. #medievalsky

The piece reminds of Byzantine goldsmithing - an import or a local artisan following Byzantine models? Exchange with the Byzantine Empire was considerable at the time (likely the 10th century); Byzantine craftsmen arrived in the region notably in the retinue of Theophanu, the bride of Otto II.

A rare depiction of humans in the Early Middle Ages can be seen on the 7th-century Pliezhausen brooch: a central spear-wielding rider trampling an enemy armed with a sword, a smaller figure with a spear behind, they carry round shields, and there are also two facing animals above. #medievalsky

Very interesting S-shaped Brooch from Englerupgård, Sjælland, Denmark, ca 520-620. Animal heads in profile with curling jaws, sharing a body, clear and simple composition. #medievalsky

Cantor: "The ideas of the Middle Ages articulated by the master medievalists vary substantially one from another. The libretto and the score they are working from — the data of historical fact — are the same. The truth, therefore, is ultimately not in the textual details but in the interpretations.”

The Someșeni treasure (Cluj county, Romania) was laid in the grave of a likely 5th-century Christian Germanic high-status woman (possibly Gepid) and comprises items such as beads, buckles, rings or necklace fragments, many decorated with almandines.

The attempt to normalise extreme violence and make it look entertaining serves one sole purpose: brutalising you to such an extent that you will also commit atrocities when asked to. #fascism

On the obverse, you can see the king’s portrait with a conical battle helmet. The inscription reads ONLAF R+ NORMANORV—Olaf, King of the Northmen. The design was modelled on Anglo-Saxon pennies struck under Knud the Great around 1024–1030.

One of AI’s major problems remains its inability to stop. It does not acknowledge its own limits because it’s been trained to spit something out no matter how misplaced or downright ridiculous it gets. Wondering about how much you actually don’t or cannot understand - there’s the rub.

One of the coins from the Mørstad hoard, the largest Viking treasure ever found in Norway, is an extremely rare Olaf Haraldsson (the Saint) mint. On the obverse, you can see the king’s portrait with a conical battle helmet. The inscription reads ONLAF R+ NORMANORV — Olaf, King of the Northmen.

The design was modelled on Anglo-Saxon pennies struck under Knud the Great around 1024–1030. In front of the portrait is a cross on three steps (Golgotha cross), inspired by Byzantine coinage, while the reverse depicts a double cross reading +CE DVX DOMINNVS MEI — My leader, my lord.

Eggers does manage to create a very distinct atmospheric folk horror, although far from Bergman’s philosophical musings - impossible to pull off with today’s audience anyway. #medievalsky

A principle that still stands: “If anything in this book is wrong or omitted, do not blame me, but rather the paucity of the sources.” (prologue to Thietmar of Merseburg’s Chronicon) #medievalsky

Such stanzas poetically echo the climate disaster into which we’ve been sleepwalking in the past decades. Record after record broken, unbearable heatwaves, irreparable destruction of both natural and human habitat. We’ve endorsed an economic system that is, in the long run, incompatible with life.
