youtube.comJessica Watkins: The Truth About First Black Woman to Lead a Crew Into SpaceJessica Watkins Makes History as the First Black Woman to Lead a Crew Into Orbit NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins has reached another milestone in space exploration, becoming the first Black woman to command a crew into orbit. Her achievement marks a significant moment for Black women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). On October 1, 2026, Watkins commanded NASA’s SpaceX Crew-13 mission, which launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The four-person crew traveled to the International Space Station (ISS), where they joined astronauts already working aboard the orbiting laboratory. But Jessica Watkins’ achievement did not happen overnight. A geologist by training, Watkins earned her bachelor's degree in geological and environmental sciences from Stanford University and a doctorate in geology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Before becoming an astronaut, she worked at NASA’s Ames Research Center and Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She also contributed to the science team behind NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover. NASA selected Watkins as an astronaut in 2017. In 2022, she became the first Black woman to complete a long-duration mission aboard the International Space Station. During that mission, she spent approximately 170 days in space and orbited Earth 2,720 times. Her leadership of Crew-13 represents another important milestone in her career. The mission involves more than reaching space. Watkins and her crewmates support scientific research aboard the ISS, contributing to investigations that could improve human health, disease research, and crop production. Such work helps scientists better understand life in space and develop knowledge that can benefit people on Earth. Her achievement also adds to the legacy of Black women who have helped expand humanity’s understanding of space. Mae Jemison became the first Black woman in space in 1992, while Sian Proctor became the first Black woman to pilot a spacecraft during the Inspiration4 mission in 2021. Watkins’ accomplishment represents a different milestone: commanding a crew into orbit. Jessica Watkins’ journey is a powerful reminder of what dedication, education, and scientific curiosity can make possible. Her leadership opens another chapter in space exploration and gives young Black girls another example of what they can pursue in science and beyond. What does Jessica Watkins’ achievement mean to you? Share your thoughts in the comments. Would you encourage more young Black girls to pursue careers in space science and engineering? Natural Hair, No Apologies: Ugochi Iwuaba Challenges Beauty Standards in Bridal Fashion: Nigerian-born fashion designer Ugochi Iwuaba is bringing a fresh perspective to luxury bridal fashion, and one moment from her New York… #NaturalHair #BridalFashion #UgochiIwuaba #FashionWeek #LuxuryBridal

youtube.comNatural Hair, No Apologies: Ugochi Iwuaba Challenges Beauty Standards in Bridal FashionNigerian-born fashion designer Ugochi Iwuaba is bringing a fresh perspective to luxury bridal fashion, and one moment from her New York Bridal Fashion Week debut is drawing attention for more than the wedding dresses. On October 15, 2026, Iwuaba presented The Cathedral Collection, her first dedicated bridal collection, featuring 17 gowns during New York Bridal Fashion Week. Based in San Diego, the designer drew partly on her West African culture to create bridal designs that combine bold details, refined elegance, and dramatic silhouettes. But beyond the gowns, one decision made her presentation especially meaningful. Iwuaba deliberately featured a model wearing her natural hair after the model revealed that other designers had objected to her curls. Rather than asking her to change her appearance, Iwuaba allowed her natural hair to take center stage. The designer made her position clear: Black women get married, Black hair is beautiful, and natural hair belongs in luxury bridal fashion. In an industry where Black designers and Black bridal beauty have often received limited visibility, this moment raises important questions about representation, beauty standards, and who gets to define luxury. In this video, we explore Ugochi Iwuaba’s New York Bridal Fashion Week debut, the inspiration behind The Cathedral Collection, and why her decision to showcase natural hair matters for Black brides and women in fashion. WHAT YOU WILL DISCOVER IN THIS VIDEO • Who Ugochi Iwuaba is and how her Nigerian roots inform her work as a fashion designer. • How The Cathedral Collection introduced 17 bridal gowns at New York Bridal Fashion Week on October 15, 2026. • How West African culture influences Iwuaba’s approach to luxury fashion and bridal design. • Why the model’s natural hair became a standout moment during the presentation. • What the incident reveals about natural hair acceptance and beauty standards in the fashion industry. • Why Black representation matters in luxury bridal fashion, especially for brides who want to see their beauty, skin tones, and natural hairstyles celebrated. • How Iwuaba is expanding her fashion house into bridalwear while building on her work in couture and eveningwear. Ugochi Iwuaba’s story is about more than beautiful wedding gowns. It is also about making room for Black women to be seen, celebrated, and represented without having to change the features that make them who they are. What do you think about Ugochi Iwuaba’s decision to feature a model wearing her natural hair? Should natural hairstyles receive the same acceptance on luxury fashion runways as every other hairstyle? At Michigan State University (MSU), a new campus event may be the beginning of a meaningful tradition. On October 11, 2026, Rising Black Men, a student organization at Michigan State University, hosted the university’s first annual Black Prom at the MSU Union in East Lansing, Michigan. The black-tie event brought students together for an evening of dinner, dancing, formal fashion, and the crowning of the Homecoming court. But beyond the elegant outfits and celebration, the event carried a deeper message about belonging, representation, and building community on campus. Founded in 2017, Rising Black Men focuses on empowering Black male students through mentorship, leadership development, and community engagement. Its mentorship program connects underclassmen with upperclassmen to help students navigate college life. Although the organization centers much of its work on supporting young Black men, its events welcome the broader student community. The idea for Black Prom first emerged in 2025 under former organization president Myles McGee. After Kenneth “KJ” Nathaniel became president in spring 2026, he revived the proposal and spent approximately seven months helping bring it to life. The inaugural celebration featured dinner, dancing, and the crowning of student Homecoming court winners. Seniors Taniya Perry and Seth Washington were named Homecoming queen and king, respectively, while other students received titles representing their class years. For students, the significance extended beyond one night of dressing up and having fun. African Student Union President Kadiatou Kaba highlighted the importance of creating spaces where Black students, particularly freshmen, can feel welcomed, appreciated, and connected to a community. Rising Black Men founder Dr. Tim Herd also had an opportunity to see how the organization has grown since its founding. His original goal was to create an uplifting environment for young Black men and challenge the negative narratives often associated with their experiences in college. Now, with MSU’s first annual Black Prom complete, an important question remains: Can this event become a lasting campus tradition for future generations of students? In this episode of Shine My Crown's Workspace, we explore the story behind Michigan State University’s first Black Prom, the students and organization who made it possible, and what the event reveals about Black student experiences, cultural representation, and the importance of community in higher education. WATCH TO DISCOVER: • What happened at Michigan State University’s first annual Black Prom. • How Rising Black Men turned an idea into a university-wide celebration. • Why the event matters for Black students and campus belonging. • How mentorship and student leadership helped bring the celebration to life. • Why Black cultural spaces can make a difference in the college experience. • Whether MSU’s first Black Prom could become a tradition for generations of students.
