Fun fact from indexing the Casey Jones book: the Lincoln assassination shows up twice. First in a Gillian Welch song…and then as part of a Robert Hunter acid trip

As I researched and wrote this book, I had a blast following the legend of Casey Jones at it moved from roundhouses to labor battles to folklorists to bluesmen to hillbilly fiddlers to Deadheads and beyond.

The project started as an outgrowth of my long-held obsession with train songs, but it's also about the ways in which America constantly recycles our past. A blend of labor history, railroad history, and folklore/music studies, it's a wild ride through American music!

last night had a dream that I was trying to explain my dissertation to the anthropic CEO, which is especially ironic given that anthropic has already stolen my book for training data

last time I taught cholera in my history of epidemics course I said that in modern times this would only spread in the context of a disaster that destroyed a town's water/sewer systems...then days later Helene hit and did precisely that to banner elk

I told my Appalachian history students I wore my Mothman t-shirt to their final exam for good luck and one was like isn’t seeing the mothman actually bad luck and….yeah I didn’t really think that one through

teaching Civil War in a highly visible library classroom w/glass windows = shocking random students with my lecture slide feat. a pile of amputated limbs (it was civil war medicine day)

talking trains (specifically the Western NC Railroad and what its history tells us about the complicated cultural history of southern railroads) over in Johnson City today: 6 pm at the Johnson City Railroad Experience!

lecturing on TVA dams in the morning and 1920s/30s southern textile strikes in the afternoon - not a bad day of class at all (even if students were not impressed when I told them I wanted to make a playlist of songs about dams)

I showed my students the NWS forecasted rainfall map the Wednesday before Helene destroyed my school/town and some later thanked me for preparing them for the nightmare to come. Why slash and cut an extremely effective government service at the behest of a billionaire?

trying to get work done while my car is being serviced and I severely underestimated the amount of chatty old men at the car dealership in Boone (I really should be used to this by now)

covering the whiskey rebellion in Appalachian history (w/heavy inspiration from Ramp Hollow) today. Not only do I get to ramble on about rye whiskey, I also get to ruin Alexander Hamilton for all the theater kids

what do exploding oil trains, the Las Vegas sphere, teenage mutant ninja turtles, Billy Strings, precision scheduled railroading, Gillian Welch, and a tornado outbreak in western Kentucky have in common? All are making appearances in the epilogue of my Casey Jones book...

as evidence that the Irish menace has long threatened the peace and prosperity of the good people in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I’d remind you all that the state had to occupy the anthracite coal fields during the Civil War due to restive Irish miners

horror movie inclined historians out there need to watch The Devil’s Bath. One of the darkest films I’ve ever seen and a bleak reminder that sometimes real history (in this case gender norms in small 18th century Austrian villages) can be more horrific than the supernatural

working on final exam study guides and reviewing what all we've been able to cover in my classes...and it turns out having a hurricane destroy your school/moving all classes to asynchronous online formats for 5 weeks mid-semester isn't exactly conducive to student learning
