🍹 Paradise, according to Bacardi. North Shields, according to Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen. There’s a whole social world in the gap between the billboard and the street below it. 📷 North Shields from “Step by Step”, 1980s ©Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen

📷 “Anybody with cameras down there would be chased.” But Mik Critchlow had an in: his cousin Trevor was a seacoaler. So what could have been a one-off visit was instead years of returning to Lynemouth and the start of Amber’s relationship with the community. 🔗 sidegallery.co.uk/collectio...

📣 Side Shout Out: Sasha Mallo Tardiveau’s "Terminus" is getting noticed, with profiles from BBC News and the Newcastle Chronicle. Made on the Tyne and Wear Metro as the old fleet disappeared, it’s a sharp record of a region in motion. See it on Side Online: sidegallery.co.uk/blog/term...

🚉 176 years ago today, Queen Victoria officially opened Newcastle Central Station. These 1971 photographs show two sides of a building that helped reshape Newcastle: John Dobson’s grand city-facing frontage, and behind it, the platforms, tracks and great curved roofs of a working railway.

🚇 Before the Tyne and Wear Metro became part of our everyday landscape, Isabella Jedrzejczyk photographed the Byker Viaduct taking shape above the Ouseburn in 1979. A record of a region being physically reshaped and connected by new infrastructure. 🔗 Explore more: sidegallery.co.uk/collectio...

🏗️ 100 years ago Gateshead was being reshaped for the Tyne Bridge. Taken 18 August 1926, this Dorman Long photograph shows workers cutting and rebuilding the roads that would form the bridge’s southern approach. Highlighting the scale of change happening at street level.

📷 When Martín Chambi’s portrait entered AmberSide in the 1970s, it was captioned “Indian from Paruro”. Elsewhere, “Giant of Paruro”. But his name was Juan de la Cruz Sihuana. Collections need active care. Keep the history, question the language, restore what was left out.

🏙️ Looking back at Newcastle in 1971, we were struck by the blackened buildings. These Lambton Visual Aids slides catch the city mid-clean: some façades pale, others still carrying decades of coal smoke and industrial soot. How have you seen your city change over time?

🌊 86 years ago today, Weegee photographed Coney Island at 4pm, from on top of the lifeguard station. Humorous and recognisable - the seaside promise is simple: cooler air, open space, a break from the city. The reality is that everyone else has had the same excellent idea.

🌱 Pride is protest, party, friendship, care, and sometimes a very good allotment. For Newcastle Pride, we’re sharing images from TopSoil, a queer gardening project run by The NewBridge Project. A space for community, safety, soil, pond life, fruit trees, and turning up as yourself. ©possy / ©Chan
