Bradford² ran a truly cynical campaign, abandoning the ground-level urbanism of his councilor days for suburban conservative vice-signaling. He knew there'd be a lane on the Right (probably it was planned that way) and so tried to become that candidate. It did not work. Good.

It is such an interesting dynamic that can be glimpsed in so many contexts but it is such an indictment of and a strong argument against right-wing political views that they supposedly stem from such firm and righteous convictions but many, many people simply won't admit to holding them in public.

The initial and very human disgust in some Republican quarters at the ugliness of Ramaswamy's ad siding with the people who abused his opponent as a child struck me as potentially A Brief Splash situation and now that Daddy Rapist has signaled that it's time to attack csa survivors, the cronies are.
Circling back to this thread, this conviction of Trump's which he is always acting on makes Brief Splashes more likely since he will not do the human and reasonable thing but will dig his heels in and refuse to give way even when practically any other person would. And his drags others with him.
Liberals think that failures are fatal, but Trump has taught the GOP that failure is always temporary and you’re only over if you give up or are physically restrained, otherwise you can always come back and try again until you succeed.
I'm not going to argue that it isn't rather bad that when this President says "Jump", the DoJ replies, "How high?" But it's worth noting that he then adds, "Over the moon!" And they then cannot even clear a matchbox.
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Trump says he ordered the Justice Department lawsuit over Alaska's US Senate race: 'I'm the one that said do it.'
There are many problems with Yglesias' opinion on this but really there's just one problem: he thinks that in order to do politics successfully, you shouldn't do politics.
A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

This is well-observed, and gets to why political debate is theatre and little else because conservatives in particular are: - ignorant or dishonest about political issues - firm in their beliefs and cannot be swayed from them - not debating to be convinced but to waste opponents' time
Like, to have a meaningful debate, you require at least two participants who: - know a lot about the subject - have some common values about the purpose of the debate - hold conflicting positions on the subject - but do not hold those positions particularly strongly
- And of course this. Conservatives aim for little bottle-logic "gotcha" moments to go viral and make their opponents' ideas look bad and their oen look good. Being entirely unmoored from proof or reality or consequences, only in debate (and propaganda) can their bad ideas live and spread.
"You won't debate me because you can't beat my IDEAS"—no, loser, I won't debate you because your ideas have been considered and rejected and no longer warrant debate, and the very act of engaging in debate frames you as better than you are and your failed ideas as worthy of anything but contempt.
Terry Gilliam is an interesting case to me as a film auteur. His movies are all about visionary, impractical creative dreamers dismissed and marginalized by dull rational society and that's also his behind-the-scenes story as a filmmaker and the consensus now is basically "he deserved that".
not just me but I feel like BRAZIL's reputation is built on the 30ish minutes of it that really work even tho the larger movie doesn't hang together at all. Gilliam's entire career as a director is kinda like this tbh
I have an involved theory that this has been a big part of Trump and MAGA's appeal on the Right. Previous conservative regimes deployed this stuff to manipulate their base but didn't buy into it themselves. This latest batch got high on their own supply and the base loves them for it.
Just been such a revolution in my worldview to realise that people like Musk actually believe this, this isn't just the nonsense they feed the rubes so they can do coldly rational mercantile calculations in smokey rooms among themselves. No. It's rubes all the way down, they're that stupid.

This is both why despite his highly evident habit of lying about everything constantly, Trump is seen to be "telling it like it is" (he believes the bullshit he sells to the rubes) and why neocons with their elite vanguard self-conception hate him so (he believes the bullshit he sells to the rubes).
