Whenever a politician says, "Common sense," they are virtually always actually saying, "This is a complicated issue or process, but I don't want you to think too much about it and instead choose this reactionary response to it."

Love that right wingers spent up until now frothing at the affront of Barack Obama denigrating a true heartland fine dining establishment and then Trump comes out like, "The White House is NOT A PIECE OF SHIT CHEESECAKE FACTORY, OK, I'M NOT CRYING."

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump is BIG MAD about Obama saying the White House now looks like Saddam opened a Cheesecake Factory: "He's not a smart guy. He's not smart at all ... for you to say it's a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president"

Honestly it seems more classist to claim an accurate depiction of the tacky Cheesecake Factory interior is classist. Assumes only lower middle class likes tacky shit when our billionaire president is one of the biggest tacky proponents. I, a woke hero, think lots of lower income people have taste!

My father made $200k a year in the 90s and he thinks that Olive Garden is one of the best restaurant experiences one can have. Taste does not track to income.

Replying to @jamellebouie.net

he almost entirely rejects the premise of politics: that through communication and rhetoric we can move publics to act collectively in particular ways.

So while I think his Piker tweets are more a product of him just being a centrist combined with an online dopamine junkie, this is the type advice where everyone should be reminded that Matt Yglesias has never run for nor won a single vote in his life.

Mehdi Hasan@mehdirhasan.bsky.social

Me: "Even if it was unpopular, are you saying the Democratic Party should not speak out against the president sending migrants who have committed no crimes to be tortured in a foreign gulag?" @mattyglesias.bsky.social: "Yeah." Me: "Just stay silent?" Yglesias: "...You gotta win first."

I do think that we should give individual candidates some flexibility and grace to make the most compelling argument in a red jdx. But politics is about changing minds and then the reality on the ground. You only lose ground by completely avoiding issues that might currently poll poorly.

Update: and now I’ve received an email asking my for $3. In what world do you follow up a day after a $500 donations with 3 separate asks for a total of $9?

Cy Klone@sighclone.bsky.social

So I did donate $500 yesterday and then got two texts from their campaign today, one asking for $5 and another asking for literally $1. I beg democrats to figure out how to do this better.

Few things have incensed me as much as Ramaswamy's behavior toward a victim of childhood abuse. I don't live in Ohio but am about to donate $500 to Acton's campaign. Ramaswamy is unfit for society entirely, let alone the power of a governorship.

So insane that weirdos throughout the country believed in the Q conspiracy and that Donald Trump, who had already admitted to things like enjoying walking in on his teenage beauty contestants changing, was going to eradicate pedophiles. Now Trump, every day, just screams "I LOVE PEDOPHILES SO MUCH!"

Of course Trump has wholeheartedly endorsed this ad because at it's heart, he found a kindred spirit - a narcissistic child rapist. His favorite people on earth!

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump: "Ramaswamy put up a very powerful Ad about a mother saying that her daughter, Acton, is a liar, and much worse. The Press is trying to get him to 'take down the Ad.' Frankly, anybody whose mother spoke about daughter that way would normally lead to the daughter being precluded from serving"

The president sides with child rapists and their enablers. That's the message I'm receiving.

I am bummed that there wasn't introspection here because I highly suspect that the reason is related to how online spaces generally incentivize conflict as a form of engagement and the left engages more with Matt than Rogers' supporters do.

Mehdi Hasan@mehdirhasan.bsky.social

"What do you want me to say? You got me." - @mattyglesias.bsky.social From an exchange on Hasan Piker from my new Zeteo interview with the top centrist pundit Matthew Yglesias - on the left, Michigan, Gaza, immigration, polls, electability, and more: zeteo.com/p/matt-ygles...

Basically, if Matt's looking for that dopamine hit that comes from dunking on some anonymous poster online, he's more likely to get what he wants by posting about Piker than he is about Mike Rogers. Not a defense or attack on him, just what I think is actually the root here.

And I think if we don't address that this is the insidious effect of basically all online platforms, how are we ever going to use them for any good?

Republicans support child abuse.

JD Vance: "When you're mean to Amy Acton, she sics the American media and of course the Democrat Party operatives all across the state of Ohio after you. But I think a person who is more worried about whether somebody says something mean about them, that person can never serve in the gov's mansion"

Unearthed footage of Vivek Ramaswamy mocking Amy Acton for being a survivor of childhood abuse: "She has no vision other than to complain about what someone else did to her"

Again, I beg Democrats to take more seriously how these scam companies both empower the right (they have been tied to Republicans for decades) and also just take advantage of Americans. Easy tie to affordability! Destroying them helps people and cuts off rightwing funding. There are no downsides.

NEW: White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia Was an Affiliate Marketer for a Fitness MLM She described the company to @wired.com as “sort of a pyramid scheme.” scoop from @tessowen.bsky.social and @timmarchman.bsky.social:

Her CV makes zero sense. Are folks also asking Pepperdine to explain how one goes from MLM mark to fucking Director of Development?! And also one of Chinese companies she worked for was called "Compassion for Migrant Children"?

I've not been in enviro spaces but in other policy areas and as a hill staffer: there are so many NGO leaders, staff, donors, and Hill staff that do not know Congress works that it's truly mind blowing. Dislike the idiom about incompetence v. malice, but assume it applies here based on experience.

David Roberts@volts.wtf

And, I would say, it's false in a way that's fairly obvious to anyone who knows how Congress works, so it's hard for me not to view it, at least coming from veteran NGO leaders, as *deliberately* misleading, in a way I find somewhat infuriating. Let's walk through the logic.

I have no respect for Megyn Kelly’s intelligence but also think it’s clear that this behavior from everyone on the right is more a product of the knowledge that there are zero downsides for them from being a shameless liar. And so long as we aren’t clear eyed about that, we’re powerless against it.

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

these people are so fucking stupid that it’s embarrassing to inhabit the same planet

The American conservative movement is truly just a collection of the nihilists, whose shamelessness is rewarded both by the idiots who willingly slurp it up and by the opposition which wants to believe there is some “Have you no decency” moment that will set things right.

Truth, justice, and some fealty to a policy/moral agenda are not values of the right. Power is - and virtually every behavior can be justified by them in the pursuit of it. They don’t pile on these clear fake stories because they are dumb - they do it because there’s only upside to their cause.

"Your [leader] is an incompetent thief... [who] wants to get out of town with as much as he can steal," is one of the most on-the-nose projections from Donny in a sea of them.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump tries to start a race war: "The once Great State of Minnesota is being taken over by Somali Immigrants ... The Somalians should not be allowed to get away with what they are doing. They view you as weak and stupid people. Fight back Minnesota, fight back!"

More on theme with my tirades today - I guarantee that Dems will not investigate Trump putting his thumb on the scale of this deal and will instead claim to want to look forward. There will be more Dems interested in angrily subtweeting the left than there will be interested in going after Skydance

Dave Karpf@davekarpf.bsky.social

I'm just gonna bookmark this for future reference when Dem pundits complain about how the party has trouble communicating its message to voters. The reason you keep running into trouble with your branding isn't campus radicals. The reason is that your opponents purchased all the media outlets.

None of this should be read as a reason to not vote for Dems. They are the only game in town. It's just a reason to never give a single one of them the benefit of the doubt on obtaining accountability for the Trump era. Demand it at every opportunity.

Every attempt at accountability is held up as tyranny by these bad actors. Every compromise or timid walk back from accountability in the face of those bad faith arguments is a vindication of further corrupt behavior.

I worked for a member of Congress who prided themselves for their bipartisanship but also tried to position himself on the side of good governance, democracy, and accountability. They voted for impeachment and later criticized it. They criticized James' charges in NY.

If you can't stand on the principle that people who break the law should be held accountable for it, particularly those who made oaths to uphold the Constitution - what can you stand for? Nothing. Nothing matters at that point.

Perfect example of what I was talking about in an overly long reply to @jeisinger.bsky.social - Democratic governor inexplicably commuted the sentence of an unrepentant enemy of democracy despite acknowledging that she would continue in that work. He contextualized it as a free speech issue.

NEW: As Colorado’s Tina Peters reportedly meets with President Trump to discuss an election “plan,” her attorney says the plan involves seizing ballots nationwide and discusses strategy for a potential civil war

To put it another way than I did in that thread - the political class is incapable of holding itself accountable even across party lines. So of course, people in that class will continue to grow more depraved and less beholden to reality. There are no real consequences for undermining society.

I follow my alma mater on LinkedIn and their content is so depressing. It's all aimed at current students (which seems like a terrible place to reach them) and it's all stuff like, "Here's how to talk to new people your freshman year!" or "The best parts of college aren't on your phone!"

Again - his cabinet constantly talks about the feats of intelligence they witness this man commit behind closed doors and yet every time he opens his mouth, he finds creative new ways to display how fucking stupid he is. Also, dude on the left is literally a blobfish made human

Saw a bunch of AZ house ads for some reason last night but funny to me that Dems in multiple races/states leading their ads with “I’m going to ban insider stock trading in Congress!” A) No you won’t B) If you’re gonna pretend you’ll get something done, can we at least go bigger?

To me, these ads scream “I am a milquetoast who picked the least consequential/highest thing to avoid offending anyone!” It screams “I don’t actually care about anything.” Good to win but worry about how many of these folks in a wave are their own little Manchin’s.

For the pro-life party, miscarriages are treated as murder but the government creating such subhuman conditions for detainees - many of whom have committed no criminal offense whatsoever - that they die is the system working as intended.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin on ICE detention centers, where at least 58 people have died: "We're not providing Holiday Inns."

The DHS Secretary's position is literally that death is a foreseeable and reasonable outcome for *anyone* who is detained, jailed, or imprisoned for any reason. After all, they are jails, not Holiday Inns.

The Eighth Amendment bars *excessive fines* but death is ok because the admin changed its policy toward immigrants and, despite you showing up for every check in, we don't like you anymore. Just the dumbest, cruelest, weakest, weirdest assholes on earth, this Administration.
