To bring a smile to your face, here’s a c. 4,500 year-old clay vase in the shape of a little hedgehog holding a bowl! 🦔 ❤️ From Chalandriani, Syros, Greece. Early Cycladic II period. National Archaeological Museum, Athens, 📷 ArchaiOptix #Archaeology

Niaux is the only cave in France open for visitors, I think. And yes, it's quite stunning.

Journal of Art in Society@artinsociety.bsky.social

About 15,000 years ago, someone with impressive powers of observation did this realistic sketch of a contented-looking horse on a wall of the Niaux Cave, in the French Pyrenees www.bradshawfoundation.com/niaux/index....

The three damned look curiously composed. Rather like tourists listening to their tour guide ("hello, name's Belial, I'm your demon today and for all eternity on our trip through the innermost bowels of hell").

In this “Jaws of Hell” roof boss from 12th-century Norwich Cathedral, dark spotted devil with long hair and cloven foot (at L) ushers condemned souls into the gaping fanged mouth of a hideous monster

Much like us: Shanidar 1 showed Neanderthals were human enough to care for an impaired individual amongst them. And now Shanidar A seems to prove they were human enough as well to engage in deadly armed interpersonal violence.

www.cam.ac.uk/stories/nean... A circular hole in a 75,000-year-old scapula suggests lethal conflict involving sharpened wooden spears among Neanderthals in the Middle East. The remains also show evidence of a brutal facial injury at least a year before death.

Roland Pease@peaseroland.bsky.social

I've been talking to archaeologist Emma Pomeroy about this remarkable, brutal find, a 75kyr lethal spear injury, likely deliberate, but also the care shown in other ways by Neanderthals, for Inside Science WS edition. Not v different behaviourally from us, we agree. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

So there's a plant in Brazil that does the mechanics of sexual reproduction but in such a strange way that there's no recombination: The offspring are more or less clones of their mother. So, why choose this roundabout way? (Maybe they care about social appearances?)

Dorota Paczesniak@dorotdesigns.bsky.social

This new paper (out today in Nature) describes a unique reproductive system, where in spite of sexual reproduction with meiosis and fertilization that lead to seed production, the resulting offspring are all genetically identical to the mother (like in asexual reproduction) How does it happen? 🧪🌱

Ehrlich.

The Michelin mascot was introduced at the Lyon Exhibition of 1894, making him one of the oldest trademarks still in use. Technically, his name isn't "Michelin Man", it's "Bibendum", a line from Horace's 'Odes': "Nunc est bibendum" which means "Now is the time to drink." (🧑‍🎨: O'Galop, 1898)

The tragedy of the thylacine: they survived long enough for us to have videos of what we lost. The last thylacine died only 2 months after being granted 'Protected' status, on 7 September 1936 at Beaumaris Zoo in Hobart, Tasmania. There were >5,000 when Europeans arrived in Tasmania ~1804.

Craftsmanship (or craftswomanship, whatever) that still proves the maker's technical skill and sense of elegance after twenty thousand years. I would call that an achievement, honestly.

See the alternating warm and cold patches in the Northern mid-latitudes? That's the imprint of a quasi-stationary Rossby wave (i.e. oscillations in the jet stream). It's rare to see it so clearly in a monthly-average temperature map.

Beeindruckend.
