It still bothers me that a privileged white man, waving a PhD, tenured at a university, is allowed to study Indigenous folks like we’re fossils. The elders are still here! Give THEM the job. Let THEM tell their stories. A white guy with a PhD & a Native fetish isn’t the expert. The elders are. Ffs.

Asshats like to shout, "You Indians crossed a land bridge from Asia!" Well, if that's the case, why don't you ever wish us a Happy Asian American Heritage Month? And if we allegedly crossed a land bridge, then wouldn't we be the ones who discovered America, not Columbus? You can't have it both ways.

I was in Marine Corps boot camp 25 years ago today. I joined one month before 9/11. At MCRD in San Diego, a plane is always taking off. Then, there was none. Our drill instructors told us that our training would be cut short & we’d be shipped to New York City to fight the enemy on Broadway…

“When Native Americans sneezed, what did they say before we got here?” “If everyone lived in a tipi together, where did a guy go to masturbate?” “Where did you guys go when a tornado hit?” … We get a lot of questions.

You never see Natives ghost hunting. Only in the Southwest will you be asked, "toast, tortilla, or frybread?" In Connecticut, I was asked, "Do you guys really like Kevin Costner?" If you fish with a Native & you say, "I got a snag," we're going to giggle. I have never worn a loincloth ... for free.

Have you noticed it's white ppl looking for dark things we Natives have warned them about? And then they make TV shows where they shout, "I got a scratch on my back!" ... "We're on Native American burial grounds." Along with the scalping narrative (which we didn't invent, btw), we're scratchers now?

Do you know what I find bananas? Humans think they’re better than dogs. Dogs, unlike humans, can detect cancer in your breast. They can see ghosts, if you believe in that. They wake you up when the house is on fire … Yet, humans lock them up, forget them, & fuck off. I prefer the company of dogs.

This was my favorite!

We, Latinos, are not your enemy. We pick your grapes for your wine. We pick your tomatoes for your Sunday gravy. We pick your potatoes for your stew. We pick your lettuce for your salad. We pick your … so on and so forth. We feed you.

Don’t go to a protest without a Sharpie. Write the number of your attorney or mom or whomever on your arm. After you write it, go over it again. Make sure it’s in there because the cops will take everything off your person & conveniently lose all of it. But they can’t take that number off your arm.

“You don’t look Indian…” I’m sorry, my loincloth is at the cleaners.

We’ll give you an Indian name, sure … for a small fee. You may not like the name we give you, but, hey, at least you can brag to your cousins at this year’s Thanksgiving dinner that you got it from a legit Native, right? “Crypto Dick, how’s that turkey coming?”

My mom is Mexica (Mēxihcah). My dad is Oglala Lakota. While the U.S. considers my mom Mexican and my dad Native American, they both have the same brown skin (because they’re both Indigenous). This is why ICE targets Natives — because our skin color is the same as it has been for thousands of years.
