We cannot teach children that the Holocaust was an atrocity humanity must never repeat, while discouraging them from recognising, questioning or challenging comparable patterns of persecution wherever they arise.

I believe education should equip children to question power, examine evidence, understand historical injustice and recognise violations of human rights, regardless of which government or state is responsible.

My concerns extend to the proposed use of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, particularly its illustrative examples concerning criticism of Israel and comparisons with Nazi Germany.

Historical comparison and critical examination of state conduct are legitimate educational activities. They should not automatically be characterised as antisemitic simply because they concern Israel. Equally, criticism of a government must be distinguished from prejudice against Jewish people.

I do not want my child taught a sanitised or disproportionately favourable account of the Israeli state, particularly one that excludes or marginalises the experiences of Palestinians.

Nor do I accept that political impartiality should prevent teachers from discussing evidence of war crimes, forced displacement, unlawful occupation or the findings of international courts and human rights organisations.

I will not accept my child being taught that genocide, ethnic cleansing, occupation or the systematic denial of human rights are simply matters of political opinion, with two equally legitimate sides.

There is a fundamental distinction between presenting competing political perspectives and presenting documented atrocities as though their moral or legal legitimacy is open to negotiation.

I want to establish from the outset that I fully support efforts to tackle antisemitism. Jewish children deserve to feel safe, respected and protected from discrimination, as does every child, regardless of their ethnicity, religion or background.

However, I have profound concerns about how these recommendations may influence the teaching of Israel and Palestine, the application of political impartiality, and the ability of children to understand and critically examine documented violations of international law.

Dear Headteacher, I am writing as the parent of a child in Year 8 to raise serious concerns following the publication of the Government's independent review into antisemitism in schools and colleges, and its acceptance of all 27 recommendations.
