Since people talk about computational molecular representations. I'm still waiting for, and working on, a learned graph-based one that is truly competitive with good old ECFP (and descendants). Fold ECFP into 16,384 bits and add the counts then feed it to xgboost/rf to beat GNNs and learned fps.

I did some of my best work out of spite. And this beautiful project wouldn't be there without it.

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

Let's see what those European militaries that want to waste more money are currently up to: - "France vows 'massive' security operation involving military forces for expected weekend protests" - "Italy sends soldiers into Milan [...]" Imagine the headlines if these were certain other countries.

Here's my thorough scientific analysis and opinon on this: Fuck them. And by that I mean expropriate them.

Very accessible thread describing incredible work revealing how evolution can shape the photosynthesis machinery to work where our assumptions said it couldn't 🧪 and the imaging here is WOW!!!!

I’m very excited to share the first big project from my PhD (my first proper-first, yay!) where we use cryoET and a fun new flavour of CLEM to study the re-organisation of photosynthetic machinery of cyanobacteria growing beyond the red limit of light. doi.org/10.64898/202...

Ah yes, a prize for the originators of yet another model that flattens society into a collection of abstract, rational individuals, while obscuring the fundamental division between capital and labour.

Haven been to a couple of art museums recently, I what the oldest known oil paining is. Some say that the method was pioneered by Jan van Eyck (the dude with the red table cloth on his head). However, about 800 years earlier Buddhist monks in todays Afghanistan painted murals with oil paint.

Given the current focus of the media on Yemen, let's *also* remember that between 2015 and 2022, the local US proxies have bombed - Schools and unis 287 times - Healthcare facilities 92 times - Sport facilities and parks 105 times Source: yemendataproject.org

In the 50s or so, Mitterrand wrote that "Without Africa, France will have no history in the 21st century". That's Europe's big problem. With decreasing "post"-colonial exploitation of labour and resources, it can no longer afford to have both, very rich people and good public services and such.

Nice quote by Joan Robinson from the early 80s: "[...] social programs are slashed while defense budgets must rise to keep pace with the level of rhetoric. [...] What we have are programs that aggravate the economic crisis while the means of destruction are multiplied."

Well, well, well...

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

I think this is relevant again. I'm not sure why/what he has done now, but it was always very obvious that he's a reactionary.

Oh, my beef with curly Sarkon goes far, far beyond that (and his capitalist apologism, with which I obviously have issues). He's the sleazy salesman kind of scientist that uses (probably) earned credibility in his field to broadcast deeply flawed ideas outside of it. A bit like nobelitis and...

So. I just watched Project Hail Mary (luckily while doing chores, so the time wasn't completely wasted). Sure, it's better than Marvel slop, but did anyone who reads a lot of science fiction actually like it? Anyway. Enjoy the Sunday (evening) everyone :-)

2011: "Workers making Converse in Indonesia say supervisors throw shoes at them, slap them in the face" 2016: "Workers collapsing unconscious at their work stations, then being forced to return to work minutes after waking up" Stop buying them NOW? Good, but also American exceptionalism.
