Strange things I own #1: Mr. Driller stuffed toy. I got it at a recycle store next to an incinerator in Takaido, Tokyo in 2008-ish for ¥500.

Found it in a pile of stuffed toys and I absolutely love Mr. Driller. I gave it to my kid at one point but he doesn't know who Mr. Driller is and barely cared about stuffed toys so it ended up in the pile pretty quickly. One of the cheek marks popped off sometime recently.

Just got done watching Mr. Bean's Holiday. I know it's not high art, but it was good?? Kid has been on a Mr. Bean kick and on try 2 he actually watched the whole thing. There are some truly dumb parts but overall it's wittier than it needs to be.

I know critics hated it, and that's why I find criticism of comedy so weird. If you know who Mr. Bean is and you want to watch a movie starring that character, it's exactly what you want. If you judge it by any other standard, it's your fault for expecting anything else.

Now I'm in full on rant mode, but I hate it when things are judged by standards they shouldn't be. This should have been considered a B- movie at worst, but seems some critics hated it. I was laughing a lot. And so much better than other "kid" movies.

I had this insane joke (?) in my dream I just remembered... Two flies were flying to a horse and one said "I'm not sure we'll make it back alive." The other said " don't worry I prepared for that..." And showed an egg sack. The first fly said " Wait, you brought MERCH?!"

I'm watching Platoon for the first time... I'm an hour in. When do the squid kids show up? Maybe I should have taken that missing "S" more seriously.

I'm watching Platoon for the first time. I know Willem Dafoe is a legendary actor with a long, storied career but I keep expecting him to put on a green mask and shout PETER PARKER!!

Here's my nine in no particular order. I realized there are way more than 9 games I consider crutial, but that's the format.

Hot take: I didn't like Metroid Dread. The Metroid parts were great but the EMMI sections were just awful. There was a lot of luck involved and simply weren't enjoyable. Also the bosses were fun for a little bit but just sponges for damage.

Me camping with my child: "Stay away from that fire, leave it to dada who has been drinking for 6 hours. And don't touch that knife. Leave it to your 'uncle' who is slightly slurring his words."

25 years ago I was moving across country and bright and early I stopped to get gas and the radio in the gas station said something about an airplane hitting a building. I didn't understand so I turned on my radio to learn what was going on.

Said "that's the news for September 11th, 2001" after talking about some baseball player. Had to go to an independent electronic store store to see what was going on. The owner clearly wanted me to leave.

For some reason I thought 9/11 would make the US a kinder, move understanding country now that we experienced a tragedy similar to what happened other places. Boy was I wrong.

I was driving in a hilly part of Wyoming where I got radio going uphill but not downhill so I was switching between 9/11 news and Harry Potter on cassette tape (this was before we knew she was hateful of course).

It was hours before I saw any video of what was going on so it was theater of the mind and totally different from reality. I also distinctly stopping at a Wal-Mart to see if they had any news coverage, but they just had some prerecorded loop about sports or whatever.

Welcome to ADHD the game show! First up, let's play a round of "Did I do that or did I just think about doing that?" followed by "Did anyone notice I just zoned out for 15 minutes?"

Then after the break, a fan favorite: "Where did I put my phone? I JUST had it!" followed by "Did I do that or did I just think about doing that?" Then we'll wrap it up with a lighting round of "Is it THAT late already?"

Many years ago a friend called me on my day off and asked me to pick up a game for him with a weird Japanese name that came out, saying he would pay me back after work and I could play it while I waited. That game changed my life. It was Katamari Damacy.

Katamari was one of the few pieces of media that truly shared the mundane, every day aspects of Japan that didn't come across if you'd never been there. Killing time eating mikan while sitting at a kotatsu, growing vegetables in a tiny garden, construction signs... Just normal stuff.

PET bottles, bug repellent incense, mayo in bags... Things I didn't realize existed in 2004. And it truly was an insanely bizarre game for the time. I'm sure I would have played it eventually, but going in completely blind was an experience.

I found a used copy and I'm playing it in Japanese for the first time, not that it's all that different, but the manual is sideways. I don't remember the US manual but I'm pretty sure I would have noticed this.

Mega Man 2 is one of m all-time favorite games and I have to admit I've only played on "normal" mode which is the easy mode for people outside of Japan. I finally got a copy of Rockman 2 and I thought "I'll just play it real quick and go to bed." Made it to Wily's Castle before I got too sleepy.

I'm like a social butterfly when I get a couple drinks in me. But like I rush to the most emotionally dangerous situations I can. Like a month to a flame. I'm a social moth.

Sometimes I wish I had a million billion followers so every time I drunkenly posted something, people would respond with "you're so funny, let me give you money!" But instead I've got 6 people following me who I know personally but haven't been in the same room with them in at least a decade.

It cost me ¥2,100 for a taxi from the station. It used to cost me ¥1,200. Something-something gas prices. Something-something straight of whatever.

Today I accidentally learned a lot of people hate podcasts. Why? Because some of the most popular ones suck? That's like saying "I don't like top-20 radio so music is awful."

If you haven't seen it lately, watch Totoro again. The very first bit of dialogue teaches sharing. The second bit of dialogue teaches you that cops are not your friends.

I've seen Totoro so many times in the last year, but I still never get tired of watching the well crafted art. Nothing can beat the masters at Ghibli, most certainly not a program.

I just realized that the warp whistle from Mario 3 is the same one as from Zelda 1. I know I'm not the first person to notice this, but both games have been part of my life since the 80s and I just made the connection today.

Even though I'm terrible at them, I love fighting games. I love the good ones and the bad ones, the bizarre characters, the incomprehensible stories, the ham-fisted scenarios on why two people must fight, the nearly identical versions of the same game... I love it all. #capcom #snk

I love special moves that I can only pull off every once in a while. I love fighting game collections that have games with such subtle differences, I can't tell them apart. I love it all.

"What do you mean this version was only on one arcade cabinet ever and only for 3 days in Osaka? There's no way I could possibly tell the difference from the "regular" version but I MUST play it!"

You are up to date.
