Our plan to stop election fraud? Win another election 😎

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

"Federal law prohibits 'troops or armed men at any place where a general or special election is held.' It’s a law with a five-year statute of limitations, which means violations of the law in 2026 could be prosecuted by an administration elected in 2028."

mooooom, the world's most gullible idiots are reinventing pascal's wager again

Matthew Yglesias @mattyglesias.bsky.social

If the “superintelligence soon” people are right (I have some doubts but I don’t think it’s crazy) then really nothing else matters which makes it hard to come up with any good ideas for articles. www.slowboring.com/p/ai-progres...

Genuinely cannot imagine seeing this question and not thinking the answer depends on who the nominee is

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Eric, please, yes or no, you are a citywide elected official in Minneapolis. Your constituents want to know: should voters choose the Democratic presidential candidate in 2028, voting blue no matter who? Or should they consider abstaining if the candidate isn't left-wing enough?

"slavery is absent from our founding documents" is a take that I imagine most third graders know is false. Like what are we even talking about here

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

None of those ideals were “genocide.” Rather tellingly, none of those ideals were even “slavery,” and its absence in the founding documents is striking evidence of the guilty hearts of the men who wrote them, given its prominence in their actual lives

not for nothing but McCarthy explicitly calls the strikes illegal from the get-go. He doesn't really think this is technically a war crime, because the entire operation was just a regular crime from the start

Andor actively makes Rogue One so much worse because now we have two seasons of watching Cassian grow into and beyond Luthen's callous pragmatism, only to be told that actually he's a jaded cynic who needs Jyn Erso to show him how to hope again

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

yes i have seen ANDOR, no it does not “make it better” because any given film should be evaluated on its own as a standalone text.

the thing that amazes me about Matthew Yglesias is that liberal parties across the entire planet have taken his advice as gospel for years now, have done nothing but eat shit since, and this has apparently caused absolutely zero internal reflection on his part

Matthew Yglesias @mattyglesias.bsky.social

Large minorities of the electorate have right-wing views on immigration and crime that mainstream politicians won't embrace, as a result voters back new parties or (in the US) outsider insurgents like Trump. www.slowboring.com/p/a-boring-t...

He could literally shoot a man on Fifth Avenue and the centrist crowd would be writing op-eds scolding "The Left" for their hysteria the next morning

Matthew Yglesias @mattyglesias.bsky.social

Left-wing people are fond of analogizing themselves to the Radicals and Abolitionists of the 1850s, but there’s no overriding signature issue to play the role of slavery in this analogy. www.slowboring.com/p/your-cause...

does it bother you at all that your immediate reaction to this ruling, effectively threatening to arbitrarily imprison trans ppl for habing sex, is to nitpick the tactics of the ppl protesting it? do you actually believe in anything? is there anyone you wouldn't sacrifice in the name of pragmatism?

How did we find another, even stupider Sam so soon after Bankman-Fried? I am calling for a complete and total shutdown on Sams until we can figure out what the hell is going on

Kat Tenbarge@kattenbarge.bsky.social

The people dominating our political landscape, culture, and economy are just so stupid and full of shit it's almost impossible to describe

I have seen a vision of the future. In it, we spend the rest of our mortal lives trying to undo the Jim Crow State that President Gavin Newsom erected in 2029. Time is a flat circle, everything old is new again, we will be paying in blood for the failure of Reconstruction for 7 generations

Andrew Lawrence@ndrew.bsky.social

im sorry, i love these and think the entire dem caucus should spend an entire week posting like this just to mock the absurdity of it all

I think that we need to get rampant speeding under control, but I don't want to further empower the police or artificially restrict cars. This leads me to the logical conclusion that we must let nonspeeders affix heavy weaponry to their vehicles and die historic fighting bad drivers on the fury road

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area. (15 in Manhattan btw)

the War on Terror broke something in Americans' brains such that they think just because they can imagine a thing potentially happening, they must act as if it *is* happening or is going to happen imminently and do everything in their power to stop it

AkivaMCohen@akivamcohen.bsky.social

I'm sorry, but there absolutely ARE legitimate concerns. A kid with XY chromosomes who identifies as female but hasn't medically transitioned in any way is a trans kid. And THAT SPECIFIC trans kid probably should not be playing on the girl's basketball team despite their identification as female.

1. In a major ruling, a federal court has ruled that Trump's executive orders banning funding to orgs that promote "gender ideology" is likely unconstitutional. This will help protect or restore funding for LGBT centers who are plaintiffs. Subscribe to support our journalism. Order inside story.

what american democracy really needs is a system of patronage. every time a progressive politician retires, a no-name staffer with a mysteriously large bank account should appear and announce that they are the duly appointed successor to comerade Ocasio-Cortez and the Mandate of Heaven is theirs

I am so here for the Pritzker-Walz United Front waging holy war on the Democratic Establishment. The two Great Khans of the Mid-West

"Maybe it's time for us to be a little bit meaner. Maybe it's time for us to be a little more fierce."

This is the XCOM Theory of History. Nothing is my fault, there was a 50-50 chance I'd have made that shot. No, don't ask why I was in a position where I needed that 50% shot to hit, that's irrelevant. It's BS RNG 0/10 terrible game

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Yes! Trump gets treated as an agent of history because he won, and these two are treated as irrelevant because they lost… except both of them were demonstrably more popular than him at the time of their respective elections. Pure fluke that Trump got in

The qualitative distinction is that they are doing it here now. Terror designations; emergency powers; mass surveillance; disappearing people to third countries and outsourcing the torture there; DHS itself; everything that we built in Iraq has finally come home

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

As bad as Guantanamo et al were, I think there is a stark qualitative distinction between it and Trump’s open, gleeful, flagrant defiance of the law. Remember, the thing about the torture memos is that they were making a legal argument for crimes, not laughing in the judiciary’s collective face.

It is categorically incorrect to say that Scar "threw" Mufasa to his death. He simply allowed Mufasa to fall (though some critics argue that he caused Mufasa's fall when he clawed his paws) into a stampede, where he was trampled to death. Terms matter.

Eric Lipton NYT@ericlipton.nytimes.com

Corruption requires explict quid pro quo. It is not corrupt to take an action that aligns with the interest of a person who gives you a gift, unless the official action was in direct response to that gift--a bribe. Terms matter. Accuracy and fairness matters. Regardless of what social media wants.

I don't think they think they'll never be out of power, necessarily. I think they think they'll never be punished for doing any of this, and Democrats will never abuse their power like they are abusing it

Chris Hayes@chrislhayes.bsky.social

I think what’s most striking about the last few months is how rarely anyone in the GOP applies this simple test. A lot of checks and balances rely on this kind of worrying about precedent but it’s now totally absent, as if they don’t think they’ll ever be out of power again.

ironically, "civilizational suicide" is a prettty apt description of what the "the woke left is committing civilization suicide" people ate doing

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

The bond market shows capital flight from the United States, with people selling off US debt. It’s the opposite of what usually happens during economic turmoil, when people buy US debt because they think it’s the safest asset in the world. The US-led global economic system is dead. By suicide.

take star wars behind a shed and shoot it. create giant piles of confiscated merchandise and dvds and set them alight. in 100 years, when the fires have finally gone out, we can make a new Star War

Owen Likes Comics@owenlikescomics.bsky.social

Genuine question - if you were the new head of LucasFilm, what would you do to revitalise the Star Wars franchise?

Why is it so hard for people to believe that fascists believe the things that they say?

Sam Wilkin@samwilkin.bsky.social

One-fifth of German voters now support a party that all others consider too extreme to govern with. I don't believe one-fifth of Germans are fascist/racist/any other -ist, but they are concerned. It's time to have the uncomfortable conversations that voters demand. open.substack.com/pub/theleopa...

day 10,943 of asking internet users to stop treating the trolley problem like a serious moral question with a correct answer when it was only ever created to demonstrate that people's answer will change depending on the wording

Amazing to see so many people come out to #defendtranskids in DC today! Organizers were expecting between 20 and 50 people, but at least 200 showed up! Don't let the fascists scare you, there's plenty of people who are eager to fight for trans rights

Look yall I get that we're all still processing what just happened, but the more time you spend mourning the less time you'll have to prepare for what's ahead. There's no one left to fight for you, you need to fight for yourself now

"Joe Biden looks so alive now at the DNC! He was just tired and sick from campaigning" ok? have you considered that maybe a presidential candidate needs to be able to campaign?

Democrats lost the debate on immigration the second they abandoned opening the border and giving migrants a pathway to citizenship You can't call Republicans inhumane when your policy basically amounts to "this abused underclass needs to stay abused because they're essential to the economy"

liberals keep saying Dems will pivot rightward if they lose in 2024 and I'm sorry but what is your evidence for that, exactly? They lost in 2016 and yet 2020 was the most progressive lineup in the party's history

Literally nobody thinks a brokered convention would be clean, and nobody thinks it would guarantee beating Trump either. They were so disturbed by what they saw in that debate that they think replacing Biden, however ugly that will be, is still preferable to pretending like nothing is wrong
