A lot of centrists think the Democratic Party should be more like the Republicans when it comes to policy. A lot of leftists think the Democratic Party should be more like the Republicans when it comes to tactics and rhetoric. I respectfully disagree with both of those opinions.

🧵 Today I was charged under Singapore's Public Order Act for “taking part in a public assembly within a prohibited area”. 3 friends were also charged for the same offence. The assembly in question? Posing for photos outside the State Courts after my friend Jolovan Wham's court mentions in Feb 2025.

Politics 101: The morning after the candidate you supported wins a primary, say good things about your candidate (and it's OK to take a victory lap), but don't trash their opponent. You'd like their opponent's supporters to vote for your guy/gal in the general election.

a glaring omission from much of the convo about the Delaney Hall labor and hunger strike imo is the fact that *these people shouldn't be laboring in the first place* this is slavery, & even the 13th Amendment's 'punishment for a crime' exception doesn't apply! ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics...

To anyone who asks if that is the wisest use of a congresswoman's time in these circumstances... It is.

If measurements are independent, they're independent. For normal distributions, the odds of getting a result many standard deviations from the mean are small, but so are the odds of getting a result a tiny fraction of a standard deviation away. 2/2

There is currently an NWS flash flood warning in effect for all five boroughs of NYC. But no City agency has posted it on this platform. Please help spread the word. “If you live in a basement apartment or low-lying area, be ready to move to higher ground.”

I think this may already be a lost cause, but I really wish the media would stop referring to sequels as "reboots." If a new movie features, for example, the son of the main character from a previous set of movies, then it is a sequel.

I’m looking for courses or resources that can help academically talented college-aged readers who learned to read with cueing methods to improve the accuracy of their reading skills, and would appreciate any suggestions the BlueSky community might have. Details below. 🧵 1/11

So I’m looking for something like that, but instead of teaching how to read faster, it teaches how to read with higher accuracy. I’d welcome any suggestions or leads any of you might have! 10/11

Almost everyone, regardless of how they were taught, uses at lease a little cueing: that’s why many people who read “Paris in the the spring” will miss the extra “the.” But if someone was taught using cueing methods, that issue is more severe. 8/11

The reading style of adults can be changed. There have long been resources that taught “speed-reading”, which is based on changing reading style. Someone who has learned a speed-reading technique can even switch back and forth between the new way they’ve learned to read and the old one. 9/11

But cueing is much more problematic for a test comprising short passages followed by multiple choice questions. If an answer choice says “Because Cl has high electropositivity” when they expect it to say “Because Cl has high electronegativity,” cueing can cause them to read it incorrectly. 6/11

It’s not that these students can’t sound out a word; it’s that, reading the way they usually do, they don’t, substituting what they think the word “should” be without consciously being aware of it. 7/11

I work with pre-med students preparing for the MCAT (the admissions test for US and Canadian medical schools). Many of these students learned reading by the cueing method. They are now academic stars with strong grades. Some participate in scientific research, and have coauthored papers. 4/11

Their reading skills are sufficient to read a textbook or even a journal article. Since cueing teaches a reliance on context, they’re fine at seeing the forest rather than the trees, a skill that was sometimes difficult for earlier generations. 5/11

Cueing methods of learning to read have been used for years, but there’s considerable scholarship suggesting they’re less effective than traditional phonics or whole-word methods, and can even reduce the effectiveness of other techniques when used in combination with them. 2/11
