Toronto institutions should not be rolling over to Ford over bike lanes with a cyclist mayor. It’s a shame the resistance has fallen so fully on everyday cyclists themselves

It’s remarkable which instances of community consensus gets listened to (airport expansion) and which don’t. Owning a home and a car are not a prerequisite for membership in any community.

Very unfortunatly I am closely following the coalition talks in some random West-East German state that makes up 3% of their population because they fucked around and put the Nazis in charge

Ontario does not deserve Ford, but the opposition parties do for being unable to sign a damn non competition agreement

Reposting a huge paragraph from the authoritarian leader’s proprietary social media site with the tag “I am in strong agreement with the President” no matter the context is a strong signal that this mould of Democrat does not have what it takes to resist Trump.

Sen. Adam Schiff@schiff.senate.gov

I am in strong agreement with the President. Congress should immediately take up and pass a federal film tax incentive to bring back these good-paying jobs that we've lost to other countries.

As a bigger question, what are the political changes we can reasonably expect from Democratic controlled Congress? Executive orders and the Supreme Court’s shadow docket are really all Trump needs. People are very hopeful for the midterms, and I am unsure as to why.

This government is naive about what is coming. Famine, armed conflict, disease and natural disasters are basically the horsemen of the apocalypse, greed is idolatry, and hell is a hotter climate. Not to get too Christian with it. Point being: 34M is a pittance www.ctvnews.ca/canada/artic...

ctvnews.caFederal government announces $34M to help communities cope with climate changeThe federal government is spending $34 million on projects to make Canadian communities more resilient to the effects of climate change.

There’s no higher priority than climate change mitigation and adaptation. There is no adjustment period or new baseline, just every decade warmer than the last for the foreseeable future aka centuries. Everything is within the climate system and floor of business as usual has fallen out beneath it

Still possible this and OpenAI’s claims are pure lies for publicity, but as it’s either dishonest or criminal this should all be shut down

BREAKING: Anthropic announced that its artificial intelligence models had breached three different organizations during cybersecurity tests that went awry, a little more than a week after its chief rival, OpenAI, disclosed a similar incident.

Carney’s legacy might be going to the mat for 1 (or 2) publicly funded oil pipelines + airport and failing to do the same for HSR. Hard to square with his climate finance background, unless he was far more interested in finance than climate.

NEW: Doug Ford railed against his own MPPs for claiming hotel stays in downtown Toronto, telling them they'd all have to pay it back. The thing is, it was actually the government that told them to use the perk in an email last year. #Onpoli globalnews.ca/news/1197496...

The PCs are having a bad time. The corruption isn’t new but it’s sticking to them for the first time (hotel charges, Dunlop’s disaster interview). When voters look at who to turn to, it will be the NDP who have been putting feet to fire this whole time.

Friendly reminder that to the extent these extreme climate events are ominous portents of things to come, they are also reality *today*, and will not only become more frequent but their nature will get more extreme as well.

I do not appreciate Carney, who’s been obscenely wealthy his entire adult life, lying about what one of the richest nations ever can and cannot afford. He’s just laundering his view that the incumbent oil sector must be protected for national unity at the expense of vulnerable people.

This is a bad bargain. What we are trading away is much more valuable than what oil companies are getting. It won’t be enough for them either. You can’t negotiate with the people holding a knife to the throat of the climate!

The fundamental issue is that there’s this big change which is in the public’s interest that a few powerful actors will do anything to oppose. When Carney tells you his priorities, believe him.

Carney at some point in his career recognized that this was our defining moment, the threat that encompassed the most aspects of life, but he has chosen the multi-millionaires-in-bunkers option as his ideal future rather than the public interests of robustness and regeneration.

Carney has the power to make decisions based on his values. His hands are not tied. When he tells you they are tied, he is lying. His decisions reveal his values. He values the accumulation of wealth over the climate. That simple.

What a lot of us actually won’t be able to afford is the warming of the next few centuries, a problem that gets worse with every bit of greenhouse gas we create and pump into the atmosphere.

Among other things, if kids under 16 are especially susceptible to online misinformation that’s completely outweighed by their abject lack of power. QAnon isn’t mostly kids! The most dangerous conspiracy theories are spread and believed by adults!

Dems' "Project 2029" first major policy proposal: an online child safety plan — narrowing Sec. 230, banning social media for kids under 16, promoting phone-free childhoods and more. Already backed by Cory Booker, Mikie Sherrill, Randi Weingarten + Jonathan Haidt. LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

What's bugging me about the whole empty condo debacle is that I bet, if Carney had gone up and said "I am going to legally expropriate and seize all these empty condos for affordable housing" the same people complaining now would probably love it, even if the payoff to developers was the exact same.

He could have pulled, yknow, blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of god, but he’s such a fake Christian he doesn’t even know that. Has to reach for p diddy instead.

Q: You have a chapter titled "More Money, More Problems." Why does more money sometimes cause more problems? Vance: I'm a millennial, and so I believe that's the wisdom of the great Christian theologian P. Diddy. That will be in an attack ad at some point in the future. But what- what I... okay.

I’ve never gotten over that the member of congress for Manhattan’s financial district has the last name Sachs Goldman. Too on the nose the other way around. I’m excited for him to lose badly tonight

Just as fossil fuel interests and their political allies are responsible for excess deaths, it’s important to note that Delanoë + Hidalgo likewise will have certainly saved lives by the end of this heatwave by applying lessons from the 2003 heatwave disaster and planting trees/removing asphalt

The government buying privately-developed housing units is a legitimate way to create social housing. Prices have not yet been negotiated. To the extent that most housing in Canada is private, should market downturns be allowed to cripple an industry building public amenities like housing?

The policy was never going to be immediately popular because it involves taxpayer's money transferred to wealthy developers and it might mire Eby irreversibly. The other side of the balance sheet has to be addressed, though. This is a cost effective way to produce social housing

The kernel of truth is that wealth inequality sucks and capitalism demands politicians act in favour of capital. But this decision in context is in the favour of the people, too. You wont effect wealth inequality by bankrupting BC housing developers. You can effect it through taxes.

The government buying privately-developed housing units is a legitimate way to create social housing. Prices have not yet been negotiated. To the extent that most housing in Canada is private, should market downturns be allowed to cripple an industry building public amenities like housing?

While waiting for these units to be sold for a loss would have produced a once-off surge of affordable private units, we do need housing developers to keep developing housing throughout booms and busts to avoid a greater affordability crisis in the case of future population growth.
