metro.co.ukKyren Wilson sets huge title target and retirement date after Belfast winKyren Wilson has racked up 11 ranking titles (Picture: Getty Images) Kyren Wilson has set himself a huge titles target over his snooker career, but does not plan on playing on as long as some legends of the game. The 34-year-old took his ranking title tally to 11 on Sunday when he won the Northern Ireland Open for a second time, battering Jak Jones 9-2 in the final. The Warrior has also enjoyed major non-ranking success, winning the Masters and Shanghai Masters last season. His win in Belfast at the weekend took him past snooker icon Jimmy White in terms of ranking wins and Wilson had some kind words for the Whirlwind. ‘Jimmy’s a hero of mine,’ Wilson said on TNT Sports. ‘I call him the godfather of snooker. ‘I remember when I was a kid and we were going out to a tournament in Riga. We were coming back on the airport shuttle bus and as the guy dropped him off he shook his hand and slipped him a fiver. I was like, he’s the coolest guy on the planet. ## Are you snooker loopy? Phil has been reporting on snooker for over a decade ‘I was desperate to equal him and to go to 11 is fantastic. But I don’t want it to stop there.’ Wilson hammered Jak Jones in the Belfast final (Picture: WST) Only 11 players in snooker history have won more than Wilson’s 11 ranking titles, but when he says he doesn’t intend to stop there, he means to keep going a lot futher. Asked if he has a target in mind, he laughed a post-match press conference: ‘I have, but I can’t tell you! ‘But no, it’s a lot more. It’s at least, if not treble what I’m on now. That’s what I want to hit.’ 33 ranking titles would put Wilson among the greatest players to ever pick up a cue, with John Higgins currently on that tally and only Ronnie O’Sullivan and Stephen Hendry boasting more. The Warrior does have plenty of time to rack up more success, although does not intend on playing on anywhere near as long as White has chosen to. The Whirlwind is still competing on the main tour at 64 years old and Wilson plans to be deep into retirement by then. ‘No chance!’ Wilson said of still going into his sixties. ‘I’ll be long retired. Jimmy White is still on tour at 64 years old (Picture: Getty Images) ‘I’ve dedicated my life to it and I want to make the most of what I can now. ‘I’m thinking 15 years. Why am I now? I’m 34 years old. So yeah, 15 years, I reckon by 50, I’m done. And then hopefully retiring somewhere warm with good beer.’ It has been an unusual time in Wilson’s career, but normality may have been restored thanks to his success at the Waterfront Hall. After winning the World Championship in 2024, he enjoyed a spectacular 24/25 season, winning four more ranking titles. The last campaign was an odd one as he won in Shanghai and at Alexandra Palace, but had next to no success in ranking events by his high standards and didn’t qualify for the Players Championship so could not defend his title at that event. He faced a significant slide down the rankings this season and – despite another good run in Shanghai – started slowly in ranked events. He has arrested that slump to some extent by lifting the Alex Higgins Trophy again. ‘I think people do move on too fast,’ he said. ‘I’ve won this one, you now look at my season, you go, wow, he’s having a really good season because he got to the final of the Shanghai, quarters of the English [Open]. Now he’s won one. So you go, wow, he’s having a really good time of it. ‘But if I hadn’t won it, all of a sudden you go, well, he’s struggling and you forget about Shanghai. ‘I’ve actually won on paper the harder ones to win because you’ve got the guaranteed top 16 players in the ones that I won. So on paper, they’re harder to win, which is peculiar, really. ‘But yeah, it’s nice to win another ranking title because you get the little bonuses that come with it. It really hurt not defending my Players’ Championship title last year, so hopefully that’s put me in a good position to be a part of that.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

metro.co.ukKyren Wilson reveals supportive Mark Allen messages ahead of Belfast winKyren Wilson is now a two-time Northern Ireland Open champion (Picture: WST) Kyren Wilson shared supportive messages with Mark Allen ahead of his Northern Ireland Open final win over Jak Jones, with words of encouragement swapped between the two rivals on the snooker table. Wilson hammered Jones 9-2 at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, lifting the Alex Higgins Trophy for the second time as he took his ranking title tally to 11. It was a fantastic performance from the Warrior in the final, making three centuries, but focus was away from potting balls for much of the week in Belfast. Allen’s return to the table for the first time since the World Championship in May came last week in a 4-2 defeat to his close friend Jordan Brown. The result seemed of little importance, though, as Allen bravely spoke out about struggling with mental health problems and possibly retiring from snooker as a result. The 40-year-old has since posted far more encouragingly about life and snooker, looking positively towards possibly playing at the UK Championship, but more widely feeling better after speaking out on his issues. ## Are you snooker loopy? In my newsletter, The Table, I analyse the biggest talking points, pull back the curtain on the sport and crown the biggest winners and losers every week. Sign up here. Phil has been reporting on snooker for over a decade There has been a lot of support for Allen from the snooker community and Wilson reached out before the final on Sunday, having also done so after the Pistol’s painful World Championship semi-final defeat to Wu Yize in May. Mark Allen has spent time in a mental health clinic this year (Picture: Getty Images) ‘I’ve spoken to Mark. I put an arm around him after the World Championship semi-final because I was working for the BBC,’ said Wilson after his Belfast triumph. ‘Just gave him a cuddle and tried to give my opinion or a little bit of advice. I was hoping it might help, I don’t know if it did. ‘I actually text him this morning [Sunday]. I wrote to him on Instagram in his direct messages because he put a story on about what he’d been doing with his mental health, his routines and stuff. ‘I just messaged him saying I’ve got no doubt you’ll be back, mate. Wish you all the best and I know I’m going to see you soon. > Completely overwhelmed by all the messages I have received since my statement. > > As I continue my treatment and my recovery now know that I simply have to raise more awareness around mental health in the future > > Best part of 6 weeks before the UK Championships starts and all… > > — Mark Allen (@pistol147) October 25, 2026 ‘He messaged me back, which was nice of him, just saying give the local crowd some good value today, all the best in the final, go and win it. ‘It’s just nice for him to know, hopefully, that as players and as I’m about to play a final, it’s just nice for him to understand that you’re still thinking of him.’ Wilson has worked with WPBSA on improving support for families of players, recognising the mental and emotional strain that is put on the sportspeople and their loved ones by the professional tour. On what he would like to see in terms of improved support for players’ mental health, Wilson believes a professional could be available at events, echoing the thoughts of Ronnie O’Sullivan and Mark Selby. ‘This is a tricky one. I know that at WST we have [sporting mental health experts] Sporting Chance, so the options are there,’ said Wilson. ‘I personally think it would be great to have someone on site because there is nothing better than having somebody face-to-face to talk to; because over the phone you can take things wrong, you get put on hold and stuff like that. Masters champion Wilson is now an 11-time ranking event winner (Picture: Getty Images) ‘If there was somebody on site I think that would really help. Like a genuine professional you can’t just put any Tom, Dick or Harry there. ‘But that’s why I think I have been successful because I’ve got a very strong foundation around me. I’ve been with my wife since I was 17 years old. My brother comes on tour with me. I’ve done that for a reason. Then I’ve got my mum, my dad, my kids, everyone. I speak to [coach] Barry Stark regularly. ‘So I think if you can have that solid base around you and then go off and pot the balls it definitely makes life a lot easier.’ Wilson’s win in Belfast was his first ranking title since March 2025, in fact it was his first ranking semi-final since then. A lean time in ranking events since then had left the Warrior with fears for his top 16 place by the time the Crucible comes round in April, but the £100,000 top prize has significantly eased those concerns. ‘I’m pleased I’ve managed to produce good, consistent, heavy-scoring snooker. It’s a good confidence booster for what’s to come,’ he said. ‘The way the tour works nowadays, winning a ranking title boosts you up into the World Grand Prix, the Players Championship and the Tour Championship. ‘To not have a chance of defending my Players Championship title last season was a real blow, sitting at home watching that. Hopefully this has given me a good stepping stone into those tournaments this season. You’ve got to ride the crest of the wave while you can.’ Comment now Comments Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google Add as preferred source

The Thai government has opened a public consultation to amend a ministerial regulation tied to the 1935 Gambling Act, which has strictly barred minors under 18 from playing or training at snooker and billiards since 1960.

Although billiards was officially recognized as a professional sport in Thailand under a 2013 law, outdated gambling regulations left youth training in legal limbo for years. Officials aim to harmonize old statutes with modern sports governance.

The public consultation will run through November 22 before draft legislation heads to the cabinet, potentially opening the door for younger Thai players to practice legally without violating decades-old anti-gambling rules.
