It's not news per se, but here's Heart to Hearth! A cooking visual novel demo I worked on a while back before my current job! I did some dialog and recipe flavor text for it (believe me, I bumbled into the pun by chance). no-thoughts-gaming.itch.io/heart-to-hearth

I’m rewatching Edgerunners season 1 with the subs for novelty. you can’t fool me, Majima. I know that’s your voice coming out of the school principal’s mouth

people say Edgerunners season 2’s soundtrack doesn’t have bangers like 1’s. I agree, but I’m gonna take a wild guess that that’s because season 1 took all the top bops from the game and left season 2 scraping a little. or maybe it’s because 1 is about rise and fall, while 2 is about the wandering

Edgerunners S2 spoilers? . . . . . . I saw a tweet about how Night City feels strangely barren here. based on implication, I’m guessing a certain single-letter-asshole is leading a wild goose chase on the other side of town. that or said asshole is running the game with low crowd density

I love the Edgerunners 2 credits song. it’s soooo happy go lucky. really fits this season’s day-in-the-life kinda vibe.

okay now I finished watching Edgerunners 2. I really liked it! maybe not as instantly iconic as season 1, but I think they set out to cover very different ground anyway. also I was wrong, maybe Night City's crowds are thin because some reckless solo kept crashing cars into people last year.

idk how I’d have handled this if I didn’t know about Kirby’s witch time dodge. the perfect dodge makes some of the other fights a little too easy, but this one practically raises an eyebrow at you if you don’t know

at one point the game quietly asks if Kirby has seen Transformers Dark of the Moon, and he seems to answer ‘yes’ by evoking Optimus Prime’s spirit of trucks and murder

I saw the Resident Evil movie yesterday! it’s a lot of fun. and it’s pretty messed up from time to time. I heard the final edit removed a lot of jokes they had initially. which is hard to imagine since the finished movie is really funny throughout.

as for RE movie doing an amalgam of later games’ zombies, well… RE1 game is mostly just shamblers. you’d have to do some updating to keep things fresh for movie fans, so why not draw from later games? you might not have enough runway for later on, but who knows if there will even be a ‘later on’?

RE7 already introduced a normal guy protagonist so that’s not unprecedented, but it’s clever of the movie to do that as well. it’s hard to feel the same controller-fumbling tension if the movie was just following a badass operator. without gameplay, they’re just a badass.

I’d maybe have some mixed feelings if my precious darling franchise got a gumbo adaptation, but idunno. MGS games are already plenty cinematic, and the real challenge is adapting the feeling of gameplay and strategy.

I don’t think Resident Evil games ever set out specifically to be period pieces, excluding remakes and prequels of course. so spiritually, I don’t have much of a problem with them updating the year or season.

I’ve only taken turns playing REmake 1 all the way through, played some early RE4, and watched a playthrough of RE2 and RE7. so I have a fairly decent working knowledge of the games, but little actual attachment to the exact details. which makes me the ideal audience for RE movie lmao

my first instinct is to scoff at gamers who are too hung up on lore and canon. but if someone made a movie titled “Metal Gear Solid” in which some dude happened upon Shadow Moses in 2026 and had to evade anachronistic Gekko mechs and Skulls Parasite Unit soldiers… wait that’d be kinda sick actually.

most references come by way of game mechanics, camerawork, or level progression. it’s really slick and unobtrusive. between RE, the Fallout show, and arguably D&D, it feels like filmmakers are finally figuring out how to adapt games. or maybe it’s that gamers have grown up and are taking the helm

I haven’t seen the Zelda Direct yet, but what I’ve seen of OoT Remake Link so far looks uhhhh over-designed. the textures are a bit much, and the lighting seems intent on accentuating the noise.

broadly speaking, I actually have no problems with the Nintendo-hired-this-man direction. I’m guessing someone who grew up with N64 old graphics might’ve fantasized how it’d look if realistic, so this one’s for them. but the character design doesn’t feel like it meets the same goal

if they wanted a crazy out-there interpretation visually, I say go big or go home. either everything’s different, or nothing is. but either way, Link’s new tunic doesn’t give the eye much opportunity to rest.

okay now I’m watching the gameplay. the environments look good, no problems there. the updating tapestry is fun. Link’s leaf tunic isn’t as bad from the back since his shield blocks his body. what is distracting though is his hat flourish. it looks like a vein to me. what kind of vein? well

Hmmmm Nintendo stuff. I'm loving the looks of Metroid Ravenous. people already made the Kirby joke, so I'll just say she's really reminding me of Metal Gear Rising's cut-and-take style gameplay. to think that Samus' niche in the Nintendo pantheon is being the biggest aura farmer there ever was

“Let’s make a new Kirby game! Maybe we’ll make it open world this time!” “Hmmm but no open world is truly open, is it?” “Hey say that again”

finally got through Deltarune Chapter 5 light spoilers . . . . . . . . . Flowery's fight was a pain in the ass. died a lot of times, retreated to max out on GreenTea, specc'd Ralsei to have more magic at expense of health. spent a lot of time just reviving Susie so that she could have her idea.

Deltarune light spoilers . . . . . . . Susie is a real one. she's the MVP, and there's a curious melancholy in standing away from that. In Metal Gear Solid 2, Kojima tried to convey a protagonist beyond your reach. I've never felt that more than here.

am I seriously considering getting the Metal Gear Solid 4 / Peace Walker PS5 port at launch for no good reason? why? David don’t do it. please see reason

okay so I halfway caved and got Peace Walker for PC so that I could play co-op with my brother. no crossplay functionality unfortunately

now that I'm getting into the swing of Splatoon Raiders, I'm really digging the new wrinkles on the gameplay. it feels partly like Ratchet Deadlocked with the arena swarms and the AI buddy, and partly like Destiny with the abilities on cooldown timer and the high jumping and slow floating.

so I watched Mandalorian and Grogu as an inflight movie. it’s pretty pulpy, which is true to Star Wars’ roots. the big monster arena fight was pretty tasteful as far as key jangling goes. some of the later action was a bit much even for me, tho that might be bcuz I was watching on a red-eye flight

I do genuinely like the bit where Grogu goes off Ellie-Last-of-Us-style to try and take care of business on his own. and on Pedro Pascal’s behalf no less. it’s a new, quieter mood than just having Mando fight more dudes over and over again

I didn’t understand a certain tweet about this before, but now I do. the movie loosely implies that the Yoda species has beaver-like instincts to build a small hut if they come across a swamp. maybe that’s their natural habitat. or maybe it’s just a coincidence! who can say

Rotta the Hutt really does say “I’m not my father, I’m my own man” on like two or three separate occasions. not in the exact same words, but with enough of the same key words in the same order that it’s really noticeable.

despite having upped his game with new John Wick skills, Mando is still very humanized by his seat-of-his-pants planning, his pain, and his exhaustion. and by extension, Mandalorians as a whole are humanized by this point. which means the movie has to bring in Embo from The Clone Wars to aura farm

the movie works best if you remember season 3 as a hazy memory imo. if I think too hard about Mando S3, I remember how they really undermined a lot of the dramatic stakes and character development in favor of this comfortable, marketable status quo.

despite being one big coherent arc, the movie is structured and paced like 3 or 4 episodes back to back. I wonder if the movie began life as season 4, only to get boosted with a movie budget. to my amateur eyes, it’s a pretty good looking movie. spiffy effects, solid camera work.

oh shit I just reached credits on Hades 1. ngl I wasn’t expecting this to be my next backlog game I’d check off the list, but hey I’ll take it. it’s kind of ironic in a classic Greek way. this run I played wise and made a reasonable build, only to SPOILERS? . . . . . . not need it in the end.

oh that’s right I heard about this. Hades 1 Spoilers though I’m sure you already know . . . . . . . . Zagreus finds employment as a penetration tester! which is literally the same job I have. and here I thought this’d be a nice peaceful break from thinking about my 9 to 5

the GTA6 preview is a pretty damn good preview. though idk why Netflix bothered getting exclusivity to it for like, a single digit amount of hours during the work week.

maybe it’s because I spent way more time with RDR2 than with GTAV, but I’m getting major RDR2 vibes from the interact prompts. I like it

I saw Toy Story 5! I have thoughts on it, but I am currently tired from a long day. I will say for now that I would watch a full movie of the Buzz army. they are like the Minions. they have the speech and inspiration of cavemen, yet have the hypercompetence of Seal Team 6
