Before I moved to Melbourne, I looked around the net to see if I could find anything interesting going on with shakuhachi. I discovered that there was one guy--David Brown--who was making beautiful wooden ones, and not only that, he also taught aikido.

In one hour, he showed me exactly what I needed to understand, and it is impossible to overstate how transformative that was for my practice. During that class he became my teacher, and over the coming years, my very close friend.

We trained together, traveled together, made shakuhachi and played them together, and passed many a happy day together mostly just enjoying each other's company. I am devastated that those days are no more. I will carry his memory with me until my days, too, end.

Based on the little I had read, I thought that I was either going to really love him or think he was really annoying. But either way, it looked like he lived in the boonies so I'd be unlikely to find out.

After arriving, I looked for some aikido classes that seemed likely to be up my alley and happened to wander into one of his. (Turns out that HE drove from the boonies twice a week for them.)

I will be damned if I allow a bunch of Confederate-waving January 6th apologists give the American people a lecture on flag waving. There is ZERO reason to enter an argument about patriotism with people who still worship traitors to America 150+ years later. They. Are. Breaking. The. Law.

The Massachusetts governor, the city, and the university needs to drop everything to locate and free this girl and make sure this doesn't happen again. This is DEFCON-1. If they do this to someone who wrote an op-ed in a college newspaper, they will do this to anyone they don't like.

Video of the international student at Tufts being arrested by "federal authorities" in Massachusetts has been released and it's terrifying. They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks. From WCVB: youtu.be/PuFIs7OkzYY

To me, a Nazi salute means, "I want to murder your family." There can be no irony about it: It puts deep anger and hatred in my heart to see it done and I will never forgive anyone who justifies or minimizes it.

A friend who works for NASA in an engineering capacity was supposed to go speak to a different friend's daughter's "Women in STEM" high school lunch group. The NASA speakers bureau forbade it because "it sounds too much like a DEI project." This is a rerun of Nazi Germany and I'm not kidding.

It is possibly relevant that the author of this wonderful piece concentrating on violin appears to be the granddaughter of Yehudi Menuhin, one of the world's best-regarded violinists ever.
