Blakemore’s debut novel, a historical novel based on the Essex witch trials, is the claustrophobic rendering of marginalised women caught up in the riptide of raging malevolent misogyny, their lives made just about bearable by their mordant, mocking humour aimed at their doltish persecuters 💙📚

This is, of course, fantastic, but we know from history - America being a recent one - that it does not banish fascism, which has deep roots and will keep trying to take power. One needs to enact a progressive agenda and start grooming the next generation of leaders - who comes after Lula?

R F Kuang’s latest novel is her most intimate, a paean for belonging for those caught in the Elysian gap between cultures, set fittingly in Taipei - itself wedged uncomfortably in diplomatic purgatory - which she has fashioned into a crucible for her protagonist in the midst of a scorching summer 💙📚

Klopp at a kids' press conference: "Best player you've coached?" "I managed many great players, but I don't want to decide. Do you know Robert Lewandowski?" "Yes!" "Mo Salah?" "Yes!" "Sadio Mane?" "Yes!" "Bobby Firmino?" *silence* "Then it's him" #LFC #Liverpool #Klopp 🇩🇪😅

Marcia Hutchinson’s debut novel wonderfully evokes the Windrush generation that painfully birthed an era of optimism, through the tempestuous lens of a mother-daughter relationship 💙📚

Chris Bohjalian’s latest is about exploitation, consciously paralleling a pared down Lolita and, very uncomfortably, written from the perspective of the girl herself, while somehow making golf sound riveting on the page, which is some feat 💙📚

I see lots of accolades for Isak’s goal and rightly so, but this equaliser was fantastic too - Wirtz’s quick pass, the great first touch by Muñoz that pushed the ball forward, the cutback then the well placed shot through the gap in defence 👏😍 #LFC

🔴 A well-taken equaliser 👏 #LFC

Mahajan’s debut novel from 2008 is a delight, encapsulating an India in flux between staidness of traditions and the novelty of newfound economic openness and growth, featuring a protagonist with a severely weird fetish that is downright exploitative 💙📚

A mostly enjoyable if campy romp that is the best live-action adaptation of #StreetFighter (not a high bar to clear) coz it faithfully reproduces the characters’ fighting moves from the game and centers the heart of the film on Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li, and obviously Blanka is THE scene stealer 💙📺

Amidst the panoply of characters Guile gets short shrift though - even the likes of Dhalsim and E Honda got to show off most of their signature moves - but I guess it’s just the difficulty that comes with juggling so many fighters

That’s poor from Macca on two counts - the first a bad pass out of defence when there were plenty of runners to hit, the second letting the crosser have time and space to float one in 🤦‍♂️ #LFC

The more I think about Sky Sports’s coverage yesterday, the more disgraceful I think it was but also the more sense that makes. After all, what do people do if the last ~20 years of the Premier League have really been a sham? There’d already be a class action lawsuit if this was in the US.

The other aspect that’s interesting is that Prof Woodford is mostly focused on one area of research (rational expectations and monetary policy), almost like a hedgehog compared to the fox that is Prof Hall who has traversed more fields of macroeconomics #EconSky

socrates80.bsky.social@socrates80.bsky.social

Worthy winners but Woodford seems an interesting choice given the tendency of the Nobel towards empirical work in recent years: his work is highly technical, very theoretical and obtuse. Hall by comparison seems a safer choice as he has lots of theory cum emprical papers #EconSky

Reflecting on yesterday… the City stuff is still raw and Liverpool suffered from their cheating more than most. But given the reaction, I suspect that if they get away without being severely punished then that will be it for a lot of fans. Finished. Why invest time and money in a rigged game?

No-frills, atmospheric thrillers from Native American author David Heska Wanbli Weiden set on the Rosebud reservation that make the latter feel claustrophobic and abject, albeit redeemed by the protaganist’s travails and striving 💙📚

Have to say the bananas make it all a less sympathetic. “I feel for the fans.” Why? They clearly relish the cheating.

As disappointed as I am, this is probably the perfect result to sum up the sorry state of the Premier League as it stands. We’re watching a sham. The cheats still prosper.

This game reminds me of that 2017 game where Mané got sent off after Ederson charged down a ball Sadio was first to and it turned the tide of the game and we went on to lose heavily. That was a pretty nonsensical call as well #LFC

The irony of Jews dealing with Antisemitism & Muslims dealing with Islamophobia is that Republicans hate ALL of us. They *pretend* to oppose antisemitism because it happens to be slightly more politically advantageous at the moment (plus their End Times obsession), but they’ll come for us as well.
