how about 50 pieces of advice? thisistheway.us

it‘s true that 1986 hit every sox fan differently, but even for a fan base that takes the team more seriously than maybe is healthy this is a little extreme

my bad everyone. i hereby apologize to the good people of the bay area.

doing some GitHub Universe pre-planning and looks like i'll have to make some alternative dinner arrangements because everything in SF will be closed by the time i get there

today was a good reminder that if i have a choice between someone else being responsible for patching software in the wake of a vulnerability versus me doing it, i generally prefer someone else

i've gone from wondering whether the crows i was trying to befriend would ever take the in shell peanuts i was offering to having to buy them at the tractor supply store because they're cheapest there

asking it whether i should try a different theme for my personal site, Claude gives me a casual back hand to the face

just voted early at my town hall. i'm happy to have gotten my vital civic duty out of the way ahead of time. i'm even happier that while i was voting, every other booth was occupied by someone who clearly felt the same way.

it's a rare solo parenting week for me, so naturally the ten year old and i watched The Life of Chuck tonight and started reading The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. i've already ticked the "turn her into a Sox fan" box. fingers crossed, @stephenking.bsky.social is next.

"And I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords."

couple of you have asked, and while @rstephens.me and i will be at kubecon, we're not doing official redmonk beers. that said, we will likely do a smaller get together somewhere, so if you want to be notified of where we end up we have added a new "city" to our monksignal list. monksignal.com

not going to send this to my brother-in-law, who is a Tigers fan still smarting from 2013 when the Red Sox were no hit through the first five innings in three consecutive games, but this is genuinely ridiculous

sad for my dodgers fan friends, but thrilled for the ones that root for the brew crew - especially the one i know who works for the front office

had a bunch of old laptops laying around that i hadn't processed, and claude: a) helped me extract the hard drives b) read them c) look for non-obvious sources of relevant info (e.g. IM logs) d) built a UI to make it all searchable the amount of personal history i've forgotten about...just wow.

this is exactly right. taking something very basic, AI has saved me weeks if not months of fiddling with ggplot2 syntax to generate charts. and i can do it from my phone.

this makes me irrationally angry every time i see it. it's not "the MLB," it's just MLB. you wouldn't say "the Major League Baseball," so don't say "the MLB." the NFL has to do it because there are multiple professional sports "leagues." MLB does not.

"oh no...i 'have' to go visit our friends from Absolem to catch up after the Monktoberfest. on a beautiful fall day. with perfect weather."

genuinely the best part of all of this is that when i went to tell the ten year old about this hilarity, i showed her a picture of Nick Offerman and entirely unprompted she said, "wow, it looks like Payton Tolle!"

as someone who has been a Peter Gammons fan for better than thirty years, i am admittedly biased, but if you like baseball, i can’t see any way you wouldn’t enjoy this. he’s the GOAT, and the stories are incredible.

keith david absolutely rules

happy for all of our friends at oxide, and happy for the industry, frankly. we need more people to take crazy swings like starting a computer company.

ME: what kind of day are we going to have today little bear? 10 YEAR OLD: no more yankees or manny machado in the playoffs, so a good one ME: [tears up]

the key to parenting is the choices you offer. for example, on the way to irish dance lessons: ME: ok little bear, do you want to listen to guardians vs white sox baseball, or history’s mysteries: the lost colony of roanoke? 10 YEAR OLD: hmm...let’s go history. ME: ok, works for me.

and also what the specific harms might be

actually, chronologically it would have been this www.youtube.com/watch?v=nP3g...

someone already took the Twilight Zone movie opener, so i'll go with www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mioe...

love this and really wish dana farber would pick a weekend for this that wasn't directly after the monktoberfest every year. if there's one thing i would walk on behalf of, it's the jimmy fund.

conference week as measured by resting heart rate

the weather during the monktoberfest was almost 80, sunny and summer-like. at my annual post-monktoberfest lunch, meanwhile, it’s 60, dark and now spitting rain. poseidon’s back.

to our sponsors, to our speakers, to our vendors, to our staff but most of all to our attendees: thank you. we could not do this without every one of you.

i'm sad but the ten year old is going to be absolutely crushed

Gray both this year and for his career has slightly better numbers against lefties, but i assume they're doing this because the short porch in right?

of course it's gray and drizzly in portland. it's time for the @monktoberfest.com.

in case you’re a little fuzzy on “the whole good/bad thing,” this is bad

not quite peak, but monktoberfest friends should see some good color

monktoberfest hat: activated

Sonny Gray, Red Sox Nation turns its lonely eyes to you

had the parental go ahead to let the 10 year old stay up late and finish this game. glad that i declined and put her to bed instead.

really don't like Schlittler, but as a Sox fan you have to tip your cap. he absolutely kicked our teeth in. kid was nails.

getting the ten year old excited for tomorrow

coincidentally introduced the ten year old to army of darkness this morning. big hit.

the @monktoberfest.com welcome cruise normally is a couple of hours and gets back a little after 8 PM. wonder if i can get them to shorten it to twenty minutes.
