“…suggesting that private schools are responsible for around two thirds (67.8 per cent) of school run congestion. To put it another way, when private schools are in term you can expect to see 3.09x more congestion compared to when only state schools are in term”

One of the last projects I set in motion before I left @wearepossible.bsky.social has finally borne fruit: the School Run Cruncher! TL;DR? YES, it does indeed look like school run traffic to private schools is disproportionately responsible for morning rush hour congestion. You’re welcome!

wearepossible.orgPrivate schools, public pollution: the need to better understand school run congestion — PossibleThe school run is one of the most visible sources of traffic in our towns and cities, with 25% of weekday morning car trips in London being trips to school. Eerste van der Helststraat, Amsterdam, in 1982 and today. A street once dominated by parked cars to a car free place for people, with children playing, greenery and cafés making use of reclaimed outdoor space. This is what’s possible when we choose to redesign our streets for life, not storage.

We are parents just like you, frustrated with how unsafe and stressful the school run can be. School Streets are amazing - when they work. And when they don't, there are reasons... 🫵 What are your experiences of School Streets? #schoolstreets #londonparents #WalkingandWheelingActionPlan

"The security for the children meant travelling with another car, and that driving in convoy proved difficult in the busy school run traffic. Checks on the route took place before term time, but with the school traffic it was deemed not safe enough." #schoolrun www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

🙄 Security checked out the royal school run during the summer holidays... Gah! 🚗💨 We could have told them school run traffic can account for 25% of traffic in the morning, layered on top of rush hour traffic. 😜 Please share this to help prevent other security teams making the same mistake.

And why wouldn't you? Cycling, whether on a regular bike or on a cargo, is such a brilliant way to get to school. And to know that as they get older they can do so independently is the dream.

"[The school] was perfect for them in every way and the children really enjoyed their time there," a source told HELLO, which The Sun reported. "They really wanted to make it work, but had to make a difficult decision as the team couldn’t make the school run operationally secure.”

Traffic in the area reportedly made it difficult for Harry and Meghan to get Archie and Lilibet to the school with their vehicles in convoy – which raised concerns. The couple's bodyguards are said to have checked the school during the summer break but did not fully investigate the school run.

More of this please! 🥳 When school streets are both substantial and enforced - they can look like this. 🚸 We believe all children and families should have a safe, healthy and fun school run like this. Do you? #streetsforkids #schoolrun #schoolstreets #londonparents

“We have given up so much public space to cars, and if you live in a city with kids you live in constant fear that they will be hit by a passing vehicle. "It restricts our movement so much that we almost can’t see it anymore.” - Architect Leopold Banchini www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

This #pavementparking across from a school forced me into the carriageway this morning. The driver shouted to tell me that it was only for a few minutes while they dropped off their kid. Well, I also have a kid, and this endangers lots of people.

The Dutch don't just build cycle tracks, they build cycle networks. Over motorways, under junctions, then branching off to the gym, football pitches & other local destinations. Safe, direct routes connecting the places people need to go. This is how you make cycling a normal part of everyday life.

What an inspiring transformation! #bemoreparis #roadsafety #carspreading

Oh to be able to let them muck about on the street outside your house with intermittent supervision... 🥲 What used to be normal is now impossible. 🛻 Cities are designed for cars, not for kids playing erratically by a road. 📱Feels safer to know where they are, even if that's glued to a screen.

Consumer choice? No chance. "If you haven’t shopped for a secondhand family car recently, I’ll save you the shock: wherever you look, it’s SUVs. If, like me, you want a car under 10 years old your options are 'tank' and 'tank-ette'." www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
