To the people on Bluesky who like to ask for money, i also would like money. Musicians are known for not having money. Composition of music is a particularly financially unrewarding task. Asking me for money is a fairly pointless exercise. Slava Ukraini!

First day of daylight savings and it’s been wonderful! We had lunch at a new sushi place and then went to a new bookshop. Sunshine and nice weather! Photo of skink on brick fence is from a couple of days ago

This is real. And worth remembering for every time (and there will be multiple times) that some far right drongo tries to convince you that the Israeli Defence Force is in any way ethical.

I can’t reply, so… Favourite composer is always a tough choice, because there are so many good options! I am very partial to Beethoven, Milhaud and Rimsky- Korsakov, because I like to hear interesting rhythms (sorry Mozart and Bach, you do choose great notes, but your rhythms aren’t on that level)

My all time least favourite word is “arguably”. Partly because nearly every time that it’s used, “possibly” would have been a better a choice, But mostly because it’s so frequently used as “arguably one of the” in cases where it didn’t need to be used at all!

I hate it when I comment on something, someone replies, and then, the OP turns off comments. I’d like to reply please. I’d like to tell that person that they have made extra large assumptions about what I was saying. Might just delete my comment…

I saw a comment from someone about wanting to travel to Japan and Mexico (both excellent choices) with the clear implication that other countries would not be visited. So I’m going to post some pics from Australia. These photos are from a trip to Royal National Park at the southern end of Sydney.

I do understand that humans gravitate to conspiracy theories. In a way they’re comforting, they tell us that the world isn’t bad, it’s just *those people*. But I have been endlessly frustrated with people here trying to claim that Virginia Giuffre didn’t commit suicide. My heart breaks for her again

How did Virginia Giuffre get here?Three months before she took her own life, a court order prevented the prominent Epstein accuser from returning to her beachfront Perth home or contacting her son and daughter. Hey BlueSky people, I’ve just read that Trump has hiked tariffs on us (Australia) over “concerns” about “forced labour”, which we don’t do. Remind me, does the US still utilise labour from prison inmates at super cheap? Also, does the US still have thousands of full time workers on SNAP?

I’m going to try to sneak some Ukrainian music onto the playlist at work. Unfamiliar music can be a useful conversation opener (seeing as the invasion of Ukraine doesn’t make the news much lately).

Guo looked at the feather flute and then at Colin and asked, “can I play it?” Colin passed the feather to Guo who played it for a little while. Guo then passed it back to Colin, saying “now you”. Colin played it too. The rest of us sat silently for all of this, not wanting to miss anything.

We were all sitting around talking (I still pinch myself remembering this. I saw Guo play at the first WOMADelaide. He was playing with a trio of Bulgarian singers, and he made his flute sound like the wind, like a waterfall, like a saxophone. I have never seen another musician like him) …

… when Colin walked up. Guo was instantly talking to Colin, the rest of us were forgotten. “Do you have it?” Guo asked. Colin said that he did and he left to get it. It turned out to be a flute made by drilling holes in the hollow section of a very long feather from a wedge tailed eagle.

The main characters are: Joji Hirota (a Japanese percussionist who uses taiko forms but plays a set up of many instruments) Guo Yue (a master of the Chinese bamboo flute) Colin Offord (an Australian musician and inventor of instruments) Me (how did I even get there? I often wonder)

Joji and Guo were featured performers at that year’s festival. They played together, and they each did solo shows. I accompanied Joji for his solo shows. After our last show, Joji & I went to the backstage area to relax, Joji had some other people there (relatives? Not sure) and soon Guo joined us
