But does the timing actually matter? To test this, we used microfluidics to experimentally manipulate the oscillation period in intestinal organoids. Could changing the rhythm alter which cell types form?

It does! Changing the oscillation period changed the cell-type composition. Strikingly, 90-minute oscillations increased the proportion of Paneth cells, whereas 130- or 170-minute oscillations did not. The rhythm matters! ⏱️

To watch signalling dynamics in living cells, we used a reporter mouse line expressing Hes1–Achilles and H2B–mCherry, from which we derived small-intestinal organoids. Here, you can see Hes1 expression changing over time!

To quantify these dynamics, we used 2D intestinal organoids to track Hes1 expression in many individual cells. We discovered that Hes1 expression oscillates, with levels repeatedly rising and falling over time!

The intestinal lining constantly renews itself. Stem cells generate many specialised cell types, yet their proportions stay remarkably balanced. How is this balance maintained? Could the timing of cell-cell signalling play a role?

I’m starting at the Hubrecht Institute at a new group leader from September. I will be hiring a PhD student through the PhD program ⬇️ If you, or anyone you know, is interested in theoretical biophysics, I will be very excited to hear from them — please send inquiries to my ISTA email for now :)

Hubrecht Institute@hubrechtinstitute.bsky.social

Are you excited to redefine our understanding of molecules, cells, tissues and organisms? Then we are looking for you! Applications for the Hubrecht International PhD program (HIPP) are now open and will be accepted until September 15th. Read more here 👉 www.hubrecht.eu/hipp/

⏰ Deadline extension for #EESBioOsc ⏰ You now have until 14 January to submit your abstract for the EMBO | EMBL Symposium 'Biological oscillators: rhythms and synchronisation across scales'! 👉 s.embl.org/ees26-04-bl

Incredibly excited to receive an ERC Consolidator Grant. This recognition means a lot for what we’ve built so far and for what’s ahead. Thank you to all collaborators and supporters. Looking forward to getting this project going!

Hubrecht Institute@hubrechtinstitute.bsky.social

Congratulations Ina Sonnen on receiving a Consolidator Grant from @erc.europa.eu! It will allow her to strengthen her research group and take on questions such as: how do cells communicate robustly and precisely with each other during development, despite noise? Huge congrats to Dr. Sonja Weterings! Yesterday Sonja from my lab @hubrechtinstitute.bsky.social delivered an outstanding PhD defense. Her thesis explores how frequency encoding shapes cell type composition in the intestine. We’re so proud of her, and we’re going to miss her!

Hubrecht Institute@hubrechtinstitute.bsky.social

Today, Sonja Ruttchen Weterings successfully defended her PhD thesis! She investigated how the timing of molecular signals influences cell renewal in the small intestine. Congratulations Sonja! 🎓 www.hubrecht.eu/phd-ruttchen-weterings

Key findings: • Mapped novel oscillatory proteins and transcripts that could play a role in somitogenesis • Discovered a dynamic, antagonistic ligand–receptor pattern in R-Spondin/LGR signalling • Perturbing ligand dynamics impairs signalling strength and somite differentiation

Please pread the word. We have just launched the Hubrecht International PhD Program (HIPP). Are you looking for a PhD position in molecular and developmental biology or related subject in an international, very supportive and collaborative environment? Then apply to the HIPP!! 👇

🧬 Looking for a PhD position in molecular or developmental biology? 🔬 ✉️ The Hubrecht Institute now has its very own PhD program! Applications are open and will be accepted until September 15th. Read more here 👉 www.hubrecht.eu/hipp/

Thank you for the kind words and highlighting this milestone. I’m thrilled and honoured to have reached tenure. Big thanks to my lab, colleagues, mentors, friends and family who’ve supported me along the way. Excited to keep doing what I love - now with slightly more security.

What if science is like solving puzzles? We spoke with @sonnenlab.bsky.social, a group leader who recently received tenure. She tells us about her journey, her research on signaling dynamics, and the challenges of leading a lab. Read her inspiring story here 👇 www.hubrecht.eu/ina-sonnen-t...

It was fun reflecting on how my career path took me from a focus on cancer research to developmental biology, the urge to understand how development and tissue homeostasis work and how my time at the @biozentrum.unibas.ch contributed to this. Thank you, Katrin Bühler-Popowski, for the interview!

Biozentrum, University of Basel@biozentrum.unibas.ch

Since she was a child, Ina Sonnen dreamed of becoming a cancer researcher. Although her academic career took a slightly different path, the topic of cancer has never quite left the Biozentrum alumna. @sonnenlab.bsky.social ‪ @hubrechtinstitute.bsky.social www.biozentrum.unibas.ch/about/alumni...
