WHERE ARE THEY? 🚨 20 people have been missing since Sunday. Our aircraft #AlbatrossUNO spotted them, alerted authorities repeatedly with updated coordinates - yet no coordinated search. Where are they? The Mediterranean is surveilled to intercept people, not rescue them.

In just two days of aerial monitoring, our crew spotted 5 distress cases in the Mediterranean. 4 of these were successfully rescued thanks to Sea-Watch 5 and the fast asset Aurora

Sea-Watch 5 performed one rescue, and Aurora conducted two rescue operations+ stabilized one more boat in distress until the arrival of the Italian Coast Guard, which eventually rescued the rubber boat. The coordinated efforts between civilian assets made all the difference.

However, on Sunday, we spotted a small wooden boat with ~30 people. After alerting authorities, we had to leave due to fuel restrictions. Until now, we have no info on whether they reached safety.

Despite obstruction, criminalisation and intimidation at sea, our rescue vessel Ocean Viking has rescued 1,001 people so far this year. Every rescue is a life saved. Every life matters.

All 99 survivors, including 29 minors and 27 women, have safely disembarked in #Naples. Three days ago, #OceanViking teams rescued 101 people from two rubber boats in distress after days and nights at sea. A pregnant woman was evacuated to Lampedusa, accompanied by her husband.

Among those stepping ashore are very young children with their families and teenagers travelling alone. On board, we heard painful accounts of suffering along their journeys and in Libya. They deserve a welcome that offers protection, care and a chance to feel safe.

🚨1/4 Over 3 days, #AlbatrossUNO, documented an increase in Libyan maritime assets operating in international waters. Patrol boats, fast RHIBs and unidentified vessels were repeatedly spotted near boats in distress.

3/4 #Frontex aircrafts were present during both interceptions documented by AlbatrossUNO. Meanwhile, shipwrecks continue, lives are being lost, and these assets are not being used to save people in distress.

4/4 The #Mediterranean is under surveillance. Surveillance cannot replace search & rescue. Interceptions cannot replace protection. States must ensure every person in distress is rescued promptly & brought to a place of safety.

2/4 #AlbatrossUNO observed unidentified vessels alongside Libyan Coast Guard assets near #OceanViking & near #Solidaire. The same day, Libyan patrol boat 101 intercepted a boat in distress, its 2nd interception documented by our aircraft in a week.

“I am just one of many...” says Yonas, “but there are still many friends left behind,” he adds. “No one leaves their country just like that... There is a reason. Our reason is war.” Yonas is one of the people rescued by MSF Oyvon crew last Sunday, Oct 4.

Yesterday, on the second day of deployment for our monitoring aircraft Albatross Uno, our crew spotted a black rubber boat carrying around 20 people. The sponsons were already partially deflated, placing those on board at immediate risk. People were later rescued by @sea-eye.org 5.

Later on, our crew spotted another black rubber boat carrying ~30 people adrift in international waters. People on board were intercepted by a Libyan GACS patrol vessel donated by Italy and the EU and forcibly returned to Libya, in violation of International maritime and human rights law.

Frontex aircrafts were the alert source for both boats in distress. In the case of the second boat, Eagle3 was present. When Albatross requested information about a rescue plan, its crew replied they had no information to share. Eagle3 stayed on scene during the interception.

⚫13 years ago, a shipwreck off Lampedusa claimed the lives of more than 368 people. It became a defining moment in Europe’s recent history, exposing the consequences of deterrence policies & human cost of inaction. 13 years later, we remember those who never reached shore and honour their memory.

Last night, 75 people, including 39 minors and 9 women, disembarked in Salerno after being rescued by the #OceanViking. Our teams had rescued 78 people in total. The previous day, a two-day-old newborn was medically evacuated with their mother and sister.

More than half of those who disembarked were minors. Among them were twins who celebrated their sixth birthday aboard. Their mother told us it was a birthday neither she nor her children would ever forget.

Many had fled countries affected by war and insecurity. With safe routes unavailable, children and their families are forced onto dangerous journeys. No child should have to risk their life crossing the Mediterranean to reach safety.

🔵 UPDATE: A mother, her daughter, and her newborn baby were medically evacuated with the support of an Italian Coast Guard patrol vessel to receive medical care on land. The other survivors are still receiving care on board the #OceanViking as it sails towards Salerno.

In Malta's Search and Rescue Region, "rescue" stands for ignorance. Most people who risk drowning here don't get saved - they get kidnapped by Libyan militias and disappear. Yesterday, Seabird 3 spotted a boat with 17 people in distress, and everyone knew what would come next.

Yesterday, following the three rescue operations that took place within 5 hours, Italian authorities assigned Salerno, two days of navigation away, as a Place of Safety.

Today, our team aboard the #OceanViking carried out 3 rescues of 17, 16 and 45 people in the Maltese SRR. Among the survivors are 12 women, a two-day-old baby and a five-month-old baby. All had heat exhaustion; some also had dehydration and fuel burns.

The team then rescued 16 people following a Mayday Relay from SeaBird 3. They had spent 24h at sea. Later, the crew overheard a Mayday Relay from Frontex’s Falcon 1 and rescued 45 more people from a rubber boat, also spotted by SeaBird 3. They are receiving care on deck.

Another reality often left unmentioned is that these policies are pushing people onto longer and more dangerous routes, including the substantially longer journey from Libya to Crete, where search and rescue coverage is more limited.

Focusing solely on the decrease in arrivals obscures this shift and the reality that people are increasingly being forced into longer and more perilous journeys. The invisibility of deaths at sea has become a structural feature of the Mediterranean crossing.

While fewer people are attempting to cross the Central Mediterranean, what remains largely unsaid is that the risk of dying or going missing at sea has increased significantly.

🔴 Shots fired & people in the water. The so-called Libyan coastguard, backed by the EU, opened fire toward NGO ship Louise Michel - instead of recovering the two people who had gone overboard.

This week, Libyan Coast Guards fired shots in the vicinity of #LouiseMichel and threatened to shoot #Aurora. 1 year after the shooting of the #OceanViking, these events illustrate what we warned about: continued funding by EU & absence of accountability fostering impunity with deadly consequences.

The so-called Libyan coastguard fired two shots towards the Louise Michel. Late yesterday afternoon, our crew became aware of a boat in distress. Alongside the Louise Michel, the so-called Libyan coastguard (scLcG) also arrived and began an interception operation, an illegal pushback.

One year ago, our rescue vessel Ocean Viking came under heavy fire from the Libyan Coast Guard vessel Houn 664 while carrying 87 people we had been rescued at sea. A year later, no one has been held accountable.

Last week, our monitoring aircraft, Albatross, spotted 17 bodies floating at sea over several days - the latest sign of what may have been another invisible shipwreck. At least 910 people have died or gone missing in the Central Mediterranean this year alone.

We are seeing a new and deeply worrying pattern in the Central Mediterranean. Between June and July 2026, unidentified boats and vessels belonging to Libyan actors approached SAR NGO vessels at high speed and followed them in international waters for extended periods.

These incidents put both people in distress and rescue crews at risk. They also make it increasingly dangerous for humanitarian organisations to carry out lifesaving operations at sea.

SOS MEDITERRANEE has launched legal proceedings in Italy, France and Germany. We are also continuing to seek accountability through European institutions and United Nations mechanisms.

The attack on the Ocean Viking was not an isolated incident. It took place in an increasingly hostile operational environment, where more and more Libyan actors are operating boats that threaten people in distress and rescue vessels.

One year ago, our rescue vessel Ocean Viking came under heavy fire from the Libyan Coast Guard vessel Houn 664 while carrying 87 people we had been rescued at sea. A year later, no one has been held accountable.

The attack badly damaged the Ocean Viking and left survivors and crew deeply traumatised. It should have led to an independent investigation, real accountability, and the suspension of EU support to LCG.

The 55 women, men & children rescued by the #OceanViking have finally reached safety in #Ortona this afternoon. Many endured horrific violence and unimaginable hardship in their countries of origin and along their journeys before facing the dangers of the Central Mediterranean.

Today, they are safe on land. But seeking safety & a better future should never depend on surviving a dangerous sea crossing. Safe pathways to #Europe are urgently needed. Their courage & resilience remind us that behind every rescue are people’s lives and stories that matter.
