Doing the medusa level, or some quest levels filled with water or lava was a quite a challenge before, you had to be very careful with your movement. Not anymore! If you move into a water or lava tile (or even a known trap) the game asks "are you sure you want to walk there y/n?"

Here is one example: Mind Flayers, one of nethack's most iconic and terrifying monsters, no longer give you amnesia, one of the most interesting and unique status effects removed from the game. In fact they aren't really scary to deal with at all now.
