📢Today Google has added motor fuel prices to the maps app so you can see how expensive driving is. 🚲Not wanting to be left out we have been around the city to check on the cost of fuelling a cycle and produced our own map. 🎉It's good news - fuelling a cycle is still free everywhere.

The experience for bus passengers on the Coast Road is still poor. Will it every change? Will decisions be continually deferred to avoid upsetting the people who like sitting is queues of cars each morning?

North East PTUG@northeastptug.bsky.social

In 2022 the North East was awarded £163 million, the highest in the country, to improve bus services in the region. The BSIP proposals included extensive bus priority corridors, with new and extended bus lanes to protect bus services from traffic congestion. www.northeast-ca.gov.uk/how-we-work/...

This is good to see. If convenient and safe options are provided people will cycle.

Cllr Owen Burbidge 🔶@oburbidge.eurosky.social

After the soft-launch of just 22 bikes available across the City last week, over 418 people cycled more than 3000km in the first week alone on 851 rides. Journeys were 3.53km on average, with a 97.9% parking compliance rate. This will have cost savings, improve air quality and health outcomes.

Bus late again this morning? Forced to drive because the journey to work would take twice as long by bus? Well you've only got one more week to have your say in the North East bus branching consultation! Please respond and call for better buses across our region. Link and pointers below!

One year ago the Movement Strategy was adopted by the council. In March this year a motion was passed at a council meeting calling for the Implementation Plan to be published, and for monthly updates while waiting for that to happen. The plan is still not published. newcycling.org/2026/09/move...

The "War on Walking" is a great reframing of baked-in car dependency, and I'm sure I'll be using some of these images in future public talks

Urban Truth Collective@urbantruth.bsky.social

Sometimes the WAR ON WALKING results in no sidewalks at all. Sometimes they put “something” in — but does that really make things walkable for anyone except those without any other choices? The #WARonWALKING takes many forms, but it’s always about making things comfortable for vehicles, not people.

Imagine how many more car trips could be removed if Newcastle's School Streets program had continued and the existing streets were enforced propoerly.

Will Norman@willnorman.co.uk

With over 870 school streets in London, 66% of kids are now getting to school by active travel. Every day there are 73,915 fewer cars doing the school run than when we started in 2016 - that’s the equivalent of a traffic jam from London to Newcastle.

Over 700 people cycle past this point on a weekday, and many hundreds more will walk past but don't get counted. The only alternative provided is 'walk for an extra 20 minutes'. Not good enough.

⛔ From 7th Sept the Waggonway past the Freeman Hospital will be closed. ⛔ From 1st Sep (the first day of school) the link to Longbenton will be closed. ⛔ There will be no access past the hospital on the waggonway. ❌ No safe cycling alternative has been provided - the diversion is Freeman Road

🏗️ For years, while constructions was taking place, hoardings around the site showed what the public realm was going to be like. 🗓️ For years nothing has changed. 🤔 Now there's been a change of control at the Council will we get the improvements the city deserves?

ChronicleLive - The Chronicle@chroniclelive.co.uk

After the announcement of new restrictions on Blackett Street, campaigners are urging Newcastle City Council to revisit a bold transformation of the city centre's road network

Not acceptable. This route, as with all routes around the city, is used by people everyday. To close it with no warning isn't good enough. People going east-west could use Heaton Park View though that is a lot busier since the LTN was removed. People using Heaton Road will have no safe alternative.

Discovered a modal filter this evening. Full closure of the Strategic Cycle Route without so much as a warning. No diversion route.

✅ Anybody who cycles through Heaton will be pleased to see the cycle symbols highlighting the cycle route through the modal filter on Spencer Street have been repainted. ❌This one is a little further forward than previously as the untaxed car still blocking the filter is over the original marking.

Did you hear Living Streets on @bbc5live.bsky.social this morning? Callers were concerned that over half of councils in England are putting parking spaces on pavements, with few planning to stop. Should cars be able to park on pavements? Listen here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002z76n

Government response: “the Government was committed to improving safety on the A1 through smaller schemes but could not commit to dualling the road, which he said had a “comparatively weak value-for-money proposition when assessed against competing investment priorities”.” This is the problem.

I met Greg at a party and bent his ear about air pollution to the extent he went home and made this AMAZING resource. This is why people shouldn't talk to meet in public

Greg Annandale@gregannandale.com

I made an animation which shows the effects of air pollution on pedestrians waiting to cross the road, along with what can be done to reduce its harmful effects: stepback.gregdev.com Thank you to @ianwalker.bsky.social for the inspiration for doing so during a conversation a couple of weeks' back!

Can you avoid the pavement roaming robots? See if you can 👇

Uh-oh, you were defeated by robots 💀 Delivery robots are operating on our pavements with no authority – and now our pavements are shrinking. Can you defeat the pavement overload? Try your hand at game.pavementoverload.com

You'll probably be safe of some streets in Heaton as drivers have kindly taken measures to stop the robots from getting along the pavement. Let your local councillors know you'd like pavements to be kept safe from vehicles, whether they are driven by people or not.

SPACE for Heaton reposted

Humans should not be forced off pavements by delivery robots, but that's exactly what's happening. The people who pay the price are those with the least room to give it up.

Newcastle has some very good sections of cycle lane, but if drivers block them they are useless. If you come across a situation like this you can contact Newcastle Parking Services Enforcement Officers on 0191 278 7799, all days between 8.00am and 6.30pm.

“Newcastle City Council continues to carry out pedestrian surveys to establish whether a formal crossing will be introduced outside the school.” It is very concerning that a formal crossing might not be thought necessary next to a school - we really do need a standard road design around schools.

So to avoid installing a bus route to solve a problem created by motorists, Newcastle Council aren’t going to restrict pollution at source, are going to make thinks even more unpleasant on an narrow shared route for pedestrians & cyclists (alongside creating a large tapestry for graffiti in a park).

It's clear what the cause of air pollution on the Coast Road and Stephenson Road is. A barrier alongside a pavement isn't going to solve the problem. Air pollution has been greatly reduced in London through strong leadership addressing issues sensibly. We need the same to happen in Newcastle.

⚠️ MIND THE GAP! 🚍 Bus passengers with wheelchairs, buggies and mobility issues have been inconvenienced for 18 months now due to the forgotten 'temporary' plastic barriers in Newcastle City Centre. Why are they still here? Are shelters still unsafe? @danhollandnews.bsky.social Enough is enough.
