This is the first time I stood under a tupelo tree. It looked like a dark gothic blaze from the outside and then when I stood under it, on a few lower branches, was the bright flame of autumn.

My little girl cat's meows sound either like a dinosaur sinking into the depths or a creaky door opening. I've never had a cat make such sounds and I've been enjoying them.

The dress was somewhere between the color of raspberry and strawberry sorbet and incredibly light, stripped of all the heaviness of the earlier periods. it looked so close to the 1920's but not yet there.

The Museum of Fine Arts Houston has announced its acquisition of Tamara de Lempicka's 1923 painting "Her Sadness"! Until this year, the work had remained in the same family for 90 years.

Every now and then she found out she was wrong, and then she treated herself to a week of passionate humility. After this she held her head higher than ever again; for it was of no use, she had an unquenchable desire to think well of herself. Henry James, The Portrait of a Lady

I've been enjoying this reread so much (last time I read James' heavily revised edition of 1908. This time is the 1881 original). I hadn't noticed before how much she's like Austen's Emma.

And that’s the difference between the 1881 version and the later New York one: the earlier one is more witty, more reminiscent of Austen and in the later version (which he edited 30 years later. older and wiser now), much of that was edited out.

Unlike my girlfriends and others around me, however, my glasses—like books—never betrayed me. They always waited for me to return to their world when I opened up another book or took them off my nightstand; they waited for me to open my eyes again. Egana Djabbaraova, My Dreadful Body

Every day is a god, each day is a god, and holiness holds forth in time. I worship each god, I praise each day splintered down, splintered down and wrapped in time like a husk, a husk of many colors spreading, at dawn fast over the mountains split. Annie Dillard, Holy the Firm

ICE activity has been picking up again in Chicago A LOT. If you were previously involved with ICE watch efforts, now is a good time to reengage. I’m going to start wearing a whistle again.

Ah if only I could grab Macabéa, give her a good bath, a plate of hot soup, a kiss on the forehead as I tucked her into bed. And cause her to wake up and find simply the great luxury of living. Clarice Lispector, The Hour of the Star Never have I wanted more for a character than this one.

I ordered a used copy of The Public Image by Muriel Spark and I'm very curious which edition will show up. Impossible to know with used books--mysterious creatures who refuse to show their identity until the last moment

I wasn't expecting this when I started, but Abigail has turned out to be one of my favorite reads of this year. It's both unexpected and noble. An unusual combination for a bildungsroman. #NYRBWomen26
