No matter what happens with the economy in the interim, NZ will likely be voting in the shadow of another election in which cities will be occupied, ballots seized & any opposition criminalized It starts with the politicians in power picking the electorate You, citizen, are not a “dropkick” #nzpol

So how does this play out? Nontrivial chance that Israel escalates in Iran, drags US deeper into the quagmire, giving Trump a pretense to declare an emergency & seize ballots/disrupt certification/re-do Jan 6 Hope I’m wrong, but hope will not prepare us for the fallout. #nzpol

Vote like Aotearoa’s democracy depends on it. Because it does. You are not a dropkick. You are a citizen. Vote them into the dustbin of history. Signed, An American refugee #nzpol

I still don’t talk about what I saw in America. COVID broke something in us. Winston predictably sang from the populist hymnal. My wife arrived in Wellington the week of the anti-lockdown protests. “I hope it doesn’t happen here,” she said. The coalition was elected. She had her answer #nzpol

Trump was elected again. America showed us what it is. Two years later, we still don’t believe our own eyes. And yes, it can happen here. And yes, it is happening here. #nzpol

I watched as the “Dirty Work” and “Dirty Tricks” that Nicky Hager warned us about brought US-style anti democracy politics to NZ. We have been failed by our media, who bow to gangs of billionaires & treat politics as sport without consequences. In 2015, Trump was a punchline. #nzpol

In NZ, we treated his election as an anomaly, a misstep from our American “friends.” It was instead the culmination of a long erosion of civil and democratic norms. “It can’t happen here,” we said. 2021-22: I worked both in NZ & US as a doctor during COVID & watched too many die. #nzpol

Millions upon millions of us took to the streets to oppose a pointless war built on false intel. NZ did not join the killing. I became a doctor. I arrived in Aotearoa the week Obama was elected. Key, with his frat-boy charm, began privatizing our shared taonga. We are paying still. #nzpol

Kent Duston@kentduston.bsky.social

Luxon’s voter suppression tactics are perfectly aligned with his commercial experience at both Unilever and Air NZ - competition is something to be actively opposed at every turn, not a way of spurring innovation and better outcomes 🧵 #nzpol

TOP will get 0/5 of its non-negotiables if it enters into a 4 headed hydra coalition with this lot Winston accidentally pointed to the truth in noting that as a newbie in parliament, Qiuelae will need non-cynical partners (Chlöe!) if anything is to change in the land of the long white Chrises #nzpol

I think this last week shows that TOP has figured out that holding 8%+ involves creating a “safe” alternative for low-information and disaffected National voters who want change but can’t quite pull the lever for Labour.

Hot takes on KM debate # 2 #nzpol Tova on point Qiuelae on script, not giving ground but also not making waves Rawiri clear, human centred. Loved the dig at Winston David’s still an empty suit at debate club. Such a punchable face Chlöe is a happy warrior tonight Winston is bored and cranky

Like the American Republicans who were devoured by MAGA, it will never occur to fascism-curious National that not going into coalition with actual fascists is an option. #nzpol

Realpolitik Winston is dumber Kissinger. #nzpol NZ “can continue to tacitly normalise the destruction of international law … or it can .. realign its foreign policy to deepen cooperation with other small …powers that, like New Zealand, depend on a functioning international rules-based order.”

The Conversation AUNZ@aunz.theconversation.com

Winston Peters says New Zealand foreign policy should address “the world as it is, not how we wish it would be”. But how viable is that really?

Brilliant from start to finish. In a small country/ economy, fiscal, monetary, and social policies can readily be interlaced to protect against income inequality, global supply shocks and mass unemployment. Instead, we seem intent on chasing end stage capitalism to the bottom.

Musical Chairs@musicalchairs.bsky.social

Sorry, I'll explain. We currently react to inflation by reducing the disposable income of spenders so that demand falls and unemployment goes up. We use a bufferstock of unemployed people to keep workers desperate, so wages are suppressed and we don't get a feedback loop (wage 🔄 prices) [🧵 1/n]

The mother lode!

Winston coyly denying AI use & comparing it to the advent of “saddles” in terms of risk should terrify you. He most certainly has used AI (probably obliviously) and so overvalues his own cunning that he is the ideal vector for mass disinformation. #nzpol

My hot takes on the Kingmakers debate. Qiuelae held her own, but faded down the stretch. Rawiri spoke truth to power (when allowed to speak). David still auditioning for the debate team. Chlöe knows her brief, always. Winston’s shtick is tiresome. #nzpol

It’s deliberate mismanagement. When everything devolves into the commodity form, the latent capacity of those raw materials is sold off and the “excess” labour is stripped of its humanity. #nzpol

Musical Chairs@musicalchairs.bsky.social

'Piggy bank is empty' nonsense provides cover for the political class. Once the lie is exposed, they have to answer questions like 'If we have 100,000s of people wanting work, and plenty of raw materials, why is our infrastructure falling to bits? Sounds like mismanagement, ay? (It is!)

Lacanian analytic/economic theory really should be a thing. This thread is so much more coherent than the endless, tiresome variations on “vibes” narratives that pass as media analysis (looking at you, Stuff 👀). Thank you! #nzpol

Andrew Dickson@andrewdickson13.bsky.social

Chloe Swarbrick says she wants Finance. The reaction from the right has been very emotional. I feel for them. “Do you really want her steering the economy?” they say... Very little explanation of what, specifically, she would get wrong. Luckily Lacan has a theory about that. #nzpol

Budgets are moral documents, first and foremost. “… a fully rounded picture would include some sort of measure of the true liabilities of not investing in public health services, social housing and the health and wellbeing of our poorest, youngest and most vulnerable.”

Together, *might* suggest dissociable effects of psychedelics and dissociatives on WM capacity vs. precision: capacity less impaired by dissociatives, precision less impaired or even enhanced by psychedelics.

When play is replaced by compliance, we are lost. Winnicott: ‘It is creative apperception more than anything else that makes the individual feel that life is worth living.’ He contrasts this with compliance, a relationship to external reality that ‘carries with it a sense of futility’.

We are most human when we play freely, imaginatively, pointlessly. Gamification risks atrophying that most precious capacity. An Essay by Justin Neuman

Ever wonder what "information" really means? Here's our new paper, led by @frosas.bsky.social, that lays out the multiple ways the term is used in natural science. rdcu.be/fCDGv

Fernando Rosas@frosas.bsky.social

What is information, really? Instead of arguing for a single valid interpretation, we propose a pluralistic view where rigorous alternatives coexist — each with affordances and limits Finally published: “Four faces of information in natural systems” 🧵

Last night, the New Zealand Government passed into law the Climate Change Response (Tort Liability) Amendment Bill. We've been opposing that law change, alongside Mike Smith, and many others for the last few months (in fact, 93% of public submissions opposed it). #nzpol #climate #ClimateLitigation

This is an American solution to a universal problem. As a hospital worker, I appreciate the work of security. But research clearly points to other root causes, all of which this govt fails to address. As with the push to hire more prison guards, this govt prioritizes force, not knowledge or care.

I don’t know if it’s intentional intellectual dishonesty, but the cases cited (Albania, Lesotho, Italy) do not in any way track with what TPM is doing. In those cases, it was the entrenched coalitions gaming the electoral maths to claim seats from independent, smaller parties … 🧵 #nzpol

It even has a name: the Dushku phenomenon. TPM is an indigenous-and minor-political party fighting for its survival using an option that was explicitly defined in NZ’s choice of how to implement MMP. There was always the possibility that overhang could swing the balance in a tight election. #nzpol

Alas, if Labour were colluding with TPM (or Nats with ACT for that matter) to engineer minority rule, that would be a genuine scandal. Nothing points to that being the case. It’s almost as if the commentariat is preemptively looking for reasons to justify the end of Maori representation. … 🧵 #nzpol

Unless the Post editors are willing to spend 10x the ink on how the Coalition restricting voter access erodes the foundation of democracy itself, this is nothing more than racism in respectable clothing. #nzpol

Alas, the Penk Pity Party cannot end until Damien has sounded a final howl of white male fragility. Stuff will now return you to your regularly scheduled neoliberal stenographers. #nzpol

I’m seeing a lot of hot takes on how National’s emergency caucus will play out tomorrow. I’m here to reassure you that when the dust settles, Winston will still be in charge. #nzpol
