I sure hope this won't end with me giving 2077 a try for the third time and getting bored 40 hours in again and feeling like I wasted my time haha

A shaggy, searching movie, like its protagonist who inconsistently (but emotionally coherently) zigzags, often from scene to scene (good things btw). On paper a standard story about a woman finding her center, but finding a refreshingly ambivalent place between her being failed and failing herself

As a pink film, it does something I appreciate very much and that is to present sex in a very casual, matter of fact, way. Haruhiko Arai is especially great at this and while this doesn't get quite as naturalistic as he gets, it definitely gets very close.

Watched the first episode and this might be the most flagrantly unsubtle "I have a bone to pick with the LDP" show I've seen since Kamen Rider Black Sun

To be clear, this is me losing at chess to the dog. (Political Lupin episode 1)

No terribly strong feelings about that Mass Effect trailer, as I don't believe that game was in any real shape anyway, but damn it does make me reminisce about Andromeda, a game that played too damn well for how fundamentally ill-conceived it was. I'd go for another round of that.

The problem, of course, is that game should have come out six years ago, and not be some tortured quasi-reboot (again) after more than a decade. Thanks EA, no one knows how to make video games anymore.

Kubi lowkey most successful of the recent crop of indictment of great men movies and a more scathing and hilarious diagnosis of the idiot kings marching deluded peasants to slaughter (or, The Current Moment) than any witty contemporary satire is capable of

I don't think Poetry hit me quite as hard as Oasis and Secret Sunshine (which is definitely partly by design), but once again, tremendously rewarding text. Lot of respect for how the narrative unfurls and spills out in the final stretch.

Lovely little journey of an album. Once again I have to appreciate Mujica's consistent ability to surprise and always do fun new stuff with their sound, god knows Bushiroad is perfectly content letting certain other bands stagnate. Diggy-MO' 🧎🧎🧎

Very simple, but beautifully captivating folk tale. Myths and wishes manifesting in reality, through belief in culture and the land, deeply immersive sense of place and patiently built up atmosphere in no small part through sound. Super refreshing.

In other news, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Takashi Shimizu and Yukiko Sode (!) to contribute to a horror mystery miniseries

Seems like the Czech distributor of Primetime is trying to offset the typical absurdly late release of an A24 movie by allowing random one-off preview screenings at select theaters midway through October before the wide release in December and everything about this is just so stupid

Preferential treatment for a three hour documentary featuring people barely anyone here knows, not for the big flashy Robert Pattinson movie lol

i first tried writing this in september 2023, but i didn't know how to communicate what i felt, so i had to do some reading and thinking. now three years later, i have a bit more grasp on what i feel, so here it is. go beyond. www.tumblr.com/blindmanbald...

A k-pop boy band vehicle in theory presents a significant challenge to Imaizumi's actor-oriented style, which he smartly bypasses by initially going in an uncharacteristically laconic and moody direction and then offloading the heavy work to Hanae Kan and his regulars.

That's when it becomes a typically knotty web of superficial unrequited infatuation as an escape from cultural dislocation and brushing against mature relationships. Kind of colder and emptier by design, like one of those 90's lonely urban weirdoes movies, but grounded and deflated of quirkiness.

"A show shouldn't be polarising so it doesn't divide the fandom" Do you like the thing or do you just like to talk about it

Bizarre bit at the end of Long Vacation where they shoot in Boston and the video quality switches to the crustiest camcorder footage imaginable. Other than that, yay, they did not fall off, great show. I want to make a pilgrimage to the apartment building they shot this at, super cinematic location.

Sometimes a little stalking is exactly what you need to break through the ice and save your marriage. Very happy to see Higashi in his final movie as empathetic and understanding as he was in the 80's - not sensationalising the drama and instead steadily working through the problem.

Somehow this is supposed to slot into a play where they're tyrant god kings murdering and damning each other to Tartarus

I know I'm gonna rag on it, but I'm still pretty excited for Godzilla in a few weeks. It's the same as with Spider-Man, no matter how bad the movie might be (and sincerely, there is no way in hell Minus Zero is going to be worse than BND), I'm going to enjoy the experience.

What they thought the Ave Mujica movie would be about: Uika must purge her incestous desires and become mentally sound What the Ave Mujica movie is about: proletariat has no ally in the bourgeoisie and will always be betrayed

It's like every time someone shares some groundbreaking story from playing GTA VI they're just describing what's been in these games since PS2 Reminds me of when RDR2 was coming out and a certain journo was saying that he can't properly explain the game because "we don't have verbs for it yet" lol

Very much an assignment project overall, but it was very nice to see Tsutsumi rerunning Keizoku SP/Beautiful Dreamer with broken worlds violently reshaped by shattered psyches in his Forbidden Siren adaptation. That's the good stuff.

Other than that, lots of mid (derogatory) in the last couple of days. A little streak like that really helps you appreciate what you get otherwise, like what do you mean the last Imaizumi you saw was underwhelming, it was great lol. Oh well, back to work tomorrow, that will probably help too.
