🌍 What influences nesting tree selection by the Indian giant squirrel? New #OpenAccess research from 'Mammalian Biology' examines key ecological factors influencing nest tree selection in the forests of Goa, India, with implications for conservation and management. bit.ly/47wqlht #Wildlife

bit.lyFactors influencing nesting tree selection by the Indian giant squirrel (Ratufa indica) in the forest areas of Bondla Zoological Park, Goa, India - Mammalian BiologyThe Indian giant squirrel (Ratufa indica) is a large arboreal rodent endemic to the Indian subcontinent. The present study was conducted to assess the parameters contributing to the nesting tree selection by the species in the moist deciduous forests of Bondla Zoological Park, Goa, India. We achieved our objective by modelling the presence/absence of a squirrel nest on a tree against ten variables selected through field observations and literature review. The measured variables were tree height, tree species, vegetation type, tree girth at breast height, number of primary branches, number of secondary branches, canopy cover, presence of climbers, presence of parasitic plants, and canopy continuity. Our analysis indicated that all measured variables influenced the selection of a nesting tree by R. indica. The results of this study can aid in the development and implementation of conservation and management policies for this species in similar habitats within and outside the confinements of protected areas of the state.

This paper provides a detailed argument in support of an interpretation of Peirce’s economy of research as being foremost about the pursuitworthiness of data that is obtained from observations, measurements, and experiments. @alisabokulich.bsky.social @mattbrewer.bsky.social #PhilSci

bit.lyPursuitworthy data collection in the geosciences: from Peirce’s economy of research to targeted observation - European Journal for Philosophy of ScienceIn the geosciences, field measurements are key sources of data, alongside more traditional laboratory experiments. Regardless of the data’s source, pursuitworthiness is arguably not just a question of the intrinsic merit of the knowledge produced, but also the value of that knowledge in light of limited resources (e.g., time, money, and labor). There is a long tradition of research on this issue in the geosciences, going back to the work of the pragmatist philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce. Motivated by his work as a government-funded geoscientist, Peirce developed a highly original theory of the “economy of research.” In this paper, we argue that Peirce’s views have been largely misunderstood, and offer an alternative interpretation of Peirce’s economy of research as an account of the pursuitworthiness of data. We argue that Peirce’s account is a forerunner of a current sophisticated data collection program in the geosciences, called targeted observation (or adaptive sampling), which is used to evaluate the pursuitworthiness of various possible measurements, experiments, or observations. We conclude by applying Peirce’s philosophical insights to assess the promise and limitations of targeted-observation programs in the geosciences today.

bit.lyPatterns and correlates of non-native inland fishes in the circum-Mediterranean region - HydrobiologiaThe circum-Mediterranean region is a global biodiversity hotspot, home to a highly distinctive freshwater fauna with a large proportion of endemic species, many of which are threatened. These ecosystems are increasingly impacted by biological invasions, particularly by non-native fishes. Here, we provide a comprehensive, updated inventory and analysis of non-native fishes recorded in inland waters across all countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, based on an extensive review of scientific literature, databases and technical reports. A total of 151 non-native fish species were recorded in circum-Mediterranean inland waters, with Italy, Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France and Croatia exhibiting the highest numbers of established species. Certain orders, such as Salmoniformes and Esociformes, were significantly overrepresented among established non-native species, whereas others, including Siluriformes and Characiformes, were underrepresented. Most introductions came from other European countries, Asia and North America, primarily through escapes or intentional releases. Non-native fish species richness showed a strong positive correlation with gross domestic product, precipitation and the number of dams, underscoring the influence of economic development and habitat availability as key drivers of species establishment. We also discuss the implications for regional biodiversity conservation and highlight the need for coordinated transnational strategies.

How do internships shape early career outcomes? This #OpenAccess study examines the relationship between work-based learning and early career outcomes, finding that paid internships are associated with higher earnings, college-level employment, and career progression. bit.ly/4yl3Zun #EduSky

bit.lyWork-Based Learning and Early Career Outcomes: Evidence on Earnings, College-Level Employment, and Career Progression - Research in Higher EducationPrior research has linked internships to career benefits for students. But are the benefits we see due to the internship itself or to other characteristics of students that make them both more likely to secure an internship and more likely to get a higher paying job after graduation? And do other forms of work-based learning also convey career benefits? In this study, we use a matching design on restricted-access data from the National Center for Education Statistics to analyze the link between work-based learning and employment outcomes for bachelor’s degree completers one and four years after graduation. Work-based learning pathways explored include paid and unpaid internships, co-ops, practica and federal work-study jobs. After pre-processing the data via nearest neighbor matching on student academic and demographic characteristics to approximate experimental conditions, we find evidence that paid internships are associated with higher earnings one and four years after completion, as well as higher likelihood of college-level employment and career progression. We hypothesize three key mechanisms by which work-based learning might improve employment outcomes: development of transferable skills, networking that facilitates access to professional connections, and resume signaling for employers that demonstrates otherwise unobservable qualities of a candidate. Our analysis provides some support to all three mechanisms, but the strongest case for the third mechanism: symbolic capital/ resume signaling. Unpaid internships and practica experiences are linked to higher likelihood of college-level employment and career progression, but not to earnings benefits.
