“how is alex the fandom’s punching bag” bestie how much time do you have because not only can i write an entire dissertation about this but i can create a whole syllabus with supporting bibliography and actual statistics
to be clear i adore henry and i love henry and alex equally but i’m kind of tired of alex being the fandom’s punching bag when his only crimes are *checks notes* having adhd, not understanding his sexuality fast enough, and disliking someone who dismissed him outright
leaving this here and then logging off, because i’m really tired of being labeled as the one miserable rwrb stan account for simply pointing out how fandom racism and microaggressions go unchecked www.teenvogue.com/story/on-whi...
and to be clear - the problem isn’t that this trope exists or that people like it. it’s that a good chunk of this fandom can’t separate alex’s bi crisis from this trope, and so alex’s realization of his sexuality is often inextricably tied to jealousy and toxicity
i’m just going to be blunt: as a late-blooming bisexual, the way this fandom overwhelmingly treats alex’s late realization of his sexuality like it’s a biblical sin that he has to repent for by watching henry be the city bicycle is downright insulting.

to be clear, i’m talking about how a disproportionate amount of the jealousy trope stories make it a point to use alex’s bi awakening and henry’s slut phase as a means primarily to make alex suffer. but the alex/nora dynamic and how nora is portrayed is definitely relevant.
one of the things i love best about rwrb is how cmq treated alex’s bi awakening. it helped me come to terms with my own sexuality. so to have alex’s bi crisis consistently be reduced to the butt of a joke or a ploy to make him suffer is actually really fucking disheartening.
what makes cmq’s stories like rwrb and the pairing so important is that their characters embrace and take ownership of their sexualities and gender identities. but only the brown character suffers for it in the fandom. and it’s wild to me that i even have to point this out.
