For the last couple of years I’ve been keeping my eye on the prize of 25 years in the state retirement plan, at which point I can retire at any age. I have six years to go and my job may not exist by then.

Made it through Isaias fine - one tree down over our fence but the fence seems fine, lost cell service but it’s back, power stayed on the whole time. Definitely got very, very lucky!

I’m not going to give something this title but I want you to know I thought of it. “Don’t start none, won’t get none: Argumentative styles in the history of liberal and humanistic education”

Payton Tolle has responded to Nick Offerman claiming him as his son. This is very important to me.

We are hunkered down at home for Isaias. We’re to the west of the cone, now, but they’re predicting that to be more gnarly than west usually is. Please send good vibes to the northern Gulf coast.

I got out of work early today thanks to my university’s decision to rent the basketball arena to the RNC for a rally attended by the president tonight and made a beeline to do a thorough recon mission of our brand new Barnes & Noble.

Our indie is a great store but it’s genre focused and doesn’t carry a lot of stuff I like to read. I’ll still support it though Bookshop but it was fun to browse literary fiction in person. It’s no Powell’s, Square, Lemuria, Porter Square, and so on but it’s huge for this market.

I am looking for someone who works at an airline because logistics fascinate me and I have a genuine, non-snarky question about checked luggage and it’s nothing I’m mad about.

I’ll go ahead with the question just in case this works. Yesterday I flew MSP -> ATL -> MOB. I got to MSP very early bc I haven’t flown out of a big airport in a long time and wasn’t sure what to expect. After I checked in my bag, I got a notification in my app that the bag had been expedited…

I’m not sure how I’m pulling this off but I am simultaneously deeply unhappy, deeply happy, and utterly exhausted. There’s nothing good to look forward to but there’s also so much good to look forward to.

The Library is devastated to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton, a music legend and titan of children's literacy. Her Imagination Library program has earned multiple Library Literacy Awards and, in 2018, she visited us to donate its 100 millionth book to our collection and host a story time. 🦋❤️

Great discussion of this complex book in book club today! I really had to overcome a lot of fears when I started this book club and it’s been a total success - we’re into our second year now. Our selections: Heartwood Love Forms Stop Me if You’ve Heard This One Heart, Be At Peace Whidbey

When I was deciding on who to ask about forming a book club, my goal was a socially compatible group of people who were committed to reading and finishing the book. The book club I’d been in before was more of an excuse to go out to dinner and chat than a book discussion, which is not bad but also

wasn’t what I was looking to add to my life. This club meets at a member’s house (we rotate hosting) and we have snacks but the focus is the book. Anyway, I’m glad I took the leap to see if others would be interested!

All of the club members have connections to academia so we meet quarterly and so far everyone has been able to finish every book. I ran a survey when I was setting up the club to ascertain a standing meeting time and also find out what people wanted to read, which is new fiction.

Whatever we pick needs to be available as a high quality audiobook as well. Each quarter I (a librarian) go through reviewers and create a shortlist of three titles, which everyone else ranks (I don’t vote unless I need to break a tie). I use ranked choice voting to pick the winner.

I tweaked my neck by sleeping funny Tuesday night and by last night it had started to loosen up - not totally back to normal but headed that way. Last night I slept funny again and now it's so stiff and sore that to turn to the right I need to pivot from the waist. Aging is not for the weak.
