Prototype yarn baller. It's not perfect but it works and has taught me some things about how to do it better. And maybe it will give me the strength to get all the singles off my spindles and ply some real yarn. #woodworking #fiberarts #spinning #yarnballer #contraption #crafts #yarn

First big job from that slab I dragged home. Resawing a 40cmx60cm chunk down to planks with a hand saw because this is way too big for my band saw. Biggest resawing job I've ever done, took literally hours. Next up: hand planing because I don't have power tools for that either #woodworking

Just barely managed to get home with this beast. The biggest (and most expensive) slab I've ever bought. Maple with some really pretty spalting. As slabs go it's not actually that big but I'm moving it around by hand and on the train so it's big for me. Excited to cut into it #woodworking #carfree

Last two wands for now. The city slicker special. One of them fresh off the rack at WandDepot and the other showing how these things basically just come apart under actual adventuring conditions. #woodworking #woodturning #magicwand #prop #costume #halloween #larp

I sold the weathered wand to a trio of teenage girls in capes. This was not a costume oriented market, aside from one guy who had horns for some reason, they were the only ones in any kind of fancy dress. They are obviously destined to grow up to be three mythopeic witches.

Had a great time at the Capitol Hill Night Market last night. I built a second table and it was nice to have the extra space. But with that table plus a canopy and weights plus everything else that's close to the limit of what I can haul around on my little cart, but it got me there #carfree

Part way through a cute little sign for my market stall because thus far the closest thing I've had to branding is a little bowl of minimum effort business cards printed on regular printer paper and wonkely cut out by hand with scissors. And I guess that _is_ the brand. So this is more of the same.

More Halloween stuff. Is this one a troll hammer? Or is it a perfectly functional willow post maul? If someone buys it for Halloween, it's a troll hammer. If not it goes into my workshop as a maul for splitting logs. #woodworking #halloween #prop #costume #hammer #troll #larp #rpg #fantasy

This one is _mostly_ historically plausible. It's made of green willow and the handle has a, reverse wedge? Whatever it's called when you spit the end of the handle and then put a wedge in and drive it into a blind mortise. First time I've done that and it seems solid. I did add a little modern glue

Back in the real world: These were an interesting exercise in repeatable spindle turning. I'm trying to get better at making matching sets of things. These are close, though you can clearly see differences in the shape of the beads when you look at the side by side.

More importantly they're made with timber not intended for wand making which means it's from trees cut in the wrong season so the bright channels are misaligned relative to the grain of the wood leading to huge efficiency losses and heat buildup that causes charring and splitting.

Some rustic magic wands for Halloween or maybe some LARP adventure. Hawthorn and maple wands with leather wrapped handles. One with an obsidian tip and the other two with willow ring rattles. #woodworking #leatherworking #magicwand #halloween #costume #larp #prop

The leather is a bit of a cheat. I bought this as scrap from another leather worker. I think it's vegetable tan but it might be modern chrome tan. And I did use modern alcohol based dye to color it. Also I bought the thread pre-waxed so it could be petroleum wax rather than natural.

When I'm making stuff like this I'm always trying to think about what the implied world is like, as if it's a thing in a story I'm writing. So the material is important. These are all made using plausibly historical materials: wood, waxed linen, rosin, leather, treenail pegs to secure the lashing.

For anybody near downtown Seattle: I'll be at the SLU popup market on 7th Ave between Bell and Blanchard this Sunday from 11-2. Stop by! This market is providing tables and a canopy so I wont have my trademark "built from garbage pallets and salvage" stall setup. I will have bowls, boxes and spoons.

A tiny scorp for tiny spoons. I want to make a bunch of pinch spoons for salt pigs but my regular hook knife is way too big. So I took some time today to make a scorp that actually fits into the bowls of these little spoons. #woodworking #carving #spooncarving #toolmaking #knifemaking

I'm a pretty rubbish knife grinder and it always takes me about three tries to get a bevel that actually cuts. This one is about half way there. I had it sharp but there were serrations leaving an ugly surface so I ground those out but now I can't get it sharp again. Sigh.

Got through the rough carving of four spoons and spatulas. On a scale of horrid to fabulous I give this alder a sold "meh" for carvability. It splits so easily that it's nearly impossible to get a clean surface, I'll have to sand the final shape in to these once they're dryer. #spooncarving

Beech box with charred oak lid. This is the last one of this set for a while, much larger . This one will be a gift. The charring process changed the shape of the knob, it's no longer round. I can't decide if I like the fire damaged look or not. Should I remake it? #woodworking #woodturning

Ok, my solution to the problem of "how will anyone know this is an egg cup" is to make some eggs that are durable enough to take to the market. Is that a joke or a real attempt to solve the problem? Hard to say. But the eggs were fun. From some cherry branches. #woodturning #woodworking

\Eggs vary, there isn't really a single perfect egg. So from a distance these look like fine eggs. But everyone knows _exactly_ what an egg looks like so when you get up close these are wrong. The proportions are slightly off. Maybe they aren't chicken eggs but some other species. Maybe duck eggs.

In my ongoing quest to understand why I like boxes with flamboyant, oversized lids I have made the most flamboyant and oversized box lid in my personal history. Could be more flamboyant. Could be more oversized. But I love it anyway. Elm, tung oil, beeswax. #woodworking #woodturning #box #biglids

Elm spurtles. A friend of mine was describing her ideal spurtle and I realized that I, despite being a lover of porridge, had never used one. So I made a set. One for her, one for me and three for the market stand. #woodturning #woodworking #kitchenutensil #spurtle #kitchen

I can confirm that, regardless of tip shape, these spurtles do stir porridge. My morning porridge is stirred. I'm not sure it's more well stirred than it would have been if I'd used the spoon I was going to eat it with like I normally do but I felt fancier while doing the stirring. And that matters.

I'm not in love with the color of this but I know rhododendron can be very pretty. Of course there are a million species and I have no idea what this one is. They could differ a lot. I've seen it darken quite a bit after cutting so maybe that will happen here as well.

Blanks for boot lasts. This is the beginning of a monster project. I've made simple turn shoes before and some costume shoes that you couldn't really walk in. But now my boots are wearing out and I want to try to make real, usable shoes to replace them. #woodworking #shoemaking #diy

I have only the vaguest idea of how do to this. I've never made or used lasts before, never made any modern style of shoe and my leather skills are minimal. But I'm excited to try. I've been wanting to do this for a decade. Every time I buy a new pair of shoes I say I'm going to make the next pair.

Yesterday was a good day for wood scavenging. Got three small pieces of hawthorn I can use for boxes and a couple of larger chunk which I don't have an ID for. Maybe some kind of cherry and ash? A bit of checking and rot but I think there's sound wood in all of them. #woodworking #salvage
