at least now countries subjected to imf nonsense know we actually believe all that austerity bullshit, as we are now demonstrating like some inexperienced escape artist drowning themselves

trump is really turning a big dial that says "tariffs" on it and ignoring screams from the audience like a contestant on the price is right

there is no significant ideologically liberal population in this country. the democrats are a center right party representing the interests of the urban educated professional class

the idea that any significant portion of americans are ideological in any real sense is laughable, much less that they are liberal. we don't have an ideologically oriented system, it's all about tribal identities and cultural allegiances

appeals to "first they came for..." will win nothing and no one, because we are a materially oriented culture totally alienated from the idea that civil society exists, much less that there are principles undergirding it

it's just natural economic forces that make labor intensive goods like housing cost way more than highly efficient goods like software. one necessary part of the solution to the housing problem is to make construction more labor efficient

a lot of ai maximalists view themselves as Big Ideas people. their great obstacle in life is the creatives who refuse to quickly and cheaply create their vision.

as with many things it doesn't matter if it's really going to happen. it only matters if it is sufficiently credible to their fragile egos.

many can't see that ai is shit because (1) they've never cultivated a sense of taste distinct from marketing and hype and (2) this is as close as they've ever come to making something

look i don't mean to rain on your parade but you don't need a nefarious evil to explain why people are ignorant and hateful. it's the default state of humans and the one they will return to just as soon as any force contrary abates

the problems of this age are not what we have added, it's what we have taken away. the relations and modes of relation between people which no longer prevail upon we weak creatures to be something more

one of the reasons queer people tend to extremes is that coming out is a microcosm of the broader minority experience of polite liberals meaning nothing they say.

when friends and family evaporate with no more threat than who you are, one knows they will never stand up for others when it costs them anything at all

the minority experience is to be a type of luxury or cultural statement piece. a thing which stands for moral success and material comfort when actual righteousness and security are lacking

if nothing else the utter recklessness, ignorance, and incompetence of the current admin's government shredding tells me they have no idea how fragile and vulnerable they really are

honestly kind of wild to see people who hide behind the law flout it and open the door for people held back by law to fuck up their shit

i've no idea what european leaders can really do to convince young people into dying for the true beneficiaries of the state: corporate interests and retirees

i cannot fathom why it struggled more with 10x10 than 11x10 or why which digit is first seems to matter

you fucked up a perfectly good computer is what you did. look at it. it's got innumeracy

enormously tired of liberals mocking trump and elon by implying they're gay, kinky, making fun of how they look, and on and on. so many people are bigots looking for an excuse

we actually need to keep production lines going above and beyond active wartime use because otherwise we forget how. one of the cheapest ways to do that is offer to pay for foreign countries to buy our defense output (which then makes it better for them to buy more)

i'm fairly sure that large corporations are sufficiently insulated from reality they could replace their entire software engineering staff with ai and not notice the problem for years

i keep hearing that critical thinking and truth are in danger but i'm not convinced there ever was such a time that they existed

it's boring, but the biggest danger the new admin poses isn't that they'll destroy democracy, it's that they'll torpedo the bond markets and send the world into a depression

i have a heap of healthy worries about what this admin is doing to institutions, but that's small peanuts to compared to the amount of the world that depends on us government debt to grease the wheels of global commerce

i dunno if it is possible to describe the total, incandescent love i have for my child. it's actually really weird, phenomenologically speaking.

branzini is so interesting, having a relatively mild flavor but not really needing anything strong. imo it's better with citrus and fennel

watching elon have to learn by direct experience that wading into politics would not make him beloved has convinced me that wealth is actually harmful to midwits

big reason rightists tend to win more is that they tend to be more focused on a series of single issues than an ideology as such.

so $900/hr for this model. just a little more expensive than people. add on what investors expect for margins in tech (~75%) and we're up to a very normal $1600/hr

Allosaur@allosaur.bsky.social

So if I’m understanding this right it costs the *company* $20 per prompt. So that means they’ll have to charge the user even more than that to make a profit

90% of the top .001% are insane, interested only in some obscure insect, don't care about money at all, or are already self-employed

what is your model of the world that you not only think you can hire the top .001%, but also that you can slave drive them 80 hours a week for less than median pay lmaooo

seems europeans missed that the "spend what you're supposed to on defense" was the american position of eight years ago. that deal is gone already. that's not a valid bargaining chip when america now feels that the anti-deterrent effect of european non-spending has already come due

at this point, increased defense spending is in the narrow self interest of europe. europe will need to offer something that actually directly benefits america, not just promise not to be a freeloader quite so much

that probably looks more like letting america dump less-regulated goods into the european market than america continuing to fund the european welfare state out of some defunct cold war logic
