In prose fiction, I think this will further elevate unique voice, style, perspective, whatever it is that Gen AI can't do or can't do well. If it feels like a copy or a formula that a machine could generate, it will have less value even if a person actually wrote it.

How are you still writing this shit www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/...

I was behind this contractor truck today and their slogan sounds like something from They Live. I don’t know what it is they think they’re saying. Is “Our job is your compliance” an expression I’m not familiar with?

The tinpot dictator’s tantrum is coming from inside the house.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

JD Vance: "Gas prices are too high ... they skyrocket every time some tinpot dictator decides to throw a tantrum"

"Grandpa has lost it."

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

JD Vance: "We're self-confident men in the Trump/Vance administration. The president has been noticing a lot about the physiques of everybody lately"

Everyone thought Lula was cooked, hopeless. Then he bought a phone and started posting and now he's gonna get a 4th term. The lesson is to never stop posting.

Saw my very first political TV ad saying liberals are racist against white people. I hope this means they’re getting desperate.

Someone is just learning that the cheesecake factory is not a cheesecake factory. "What do you mean, it's a restaurant? All these years, I thought it was like that conveyor-belt scene from I Love Lucy, but cheesecakes instead of chocolate."

I just read the two student stories for Tuesday’s Writing Fiction workshop. One is a sci-fi futuristic body modification suspense horror and one is an isolated village vampire horror.

Mike Johnson: Get me a focus group [Angry that his staff only talked to ten million people]

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Mike Johnson: "When I'm in these big arenas, I ask for hands -- 'Show me your hand if you've answered a poll in the last six months.' There will be like three hands among 300 people. I'm telling you, these polls are off. All of them."

This will sound like a drugs question but it is not a drugs question it is a houseplant question. Can grow lights be enough for indoor plants that only get a little indirect light? Are there certain plants that would do well like that? (Cheap grow lights that come with the plant stand.)

You probably know this already, but just in case, before the temperature starts getting below freezing at night, you should disconnect exterior water hoses, turn off water to those spigots and any pipes inside your house that go through an unheated space (like a garage).

Leave the outside spigot open so any water in the pipe can escape. I have had more than one pipe burst over the years. (Talking about the house’s plumbing, not my own.) —Dad

I'm not sure 100 of these dudes could beat up one gorilla. [Gorilla rips arms of first guy out of sockets, bites second guy's face off. Ninety-eight guys poop themselves and run.]

Guys whose whole thing is obsessing relentlessly over the righteousness of patriarchy and aLpHa masculinity are flexing and high-fiving over ... a one-rep deadlift max of 315lbs/143kgs.

If I tell you not to eat at the new Taco Bell that Sauron just opened, I am *not* making fun of all Taco Bells owned by people who are not Sauron.

also yeah, as everyone has pointed out, the punchline is that he is comparing trump to saddam hussein!

So many people are in the first generation to ever know or care about things.

So, in a new NYT essay about May 13, 1986 (the day she was born), Lena Dunham suggests that, back then, nobody in Canada or the US knew or cared much about acid rain. I hate to get in the way of a good generational shaming, but she’s just…er, totally wrong?

I generally don't want to read books in a series written after the author is dead even if it's written by a human being. Write a Jeeves novel if you must, but don't expect me to consider it one no matter what the estate says.

Me: Kafka was a great writer and we can learn a lot from him. Someone on Bluesky: He was a bad boyfriend. Do better.

We were talking about this in class after reading and watching Planet of the Apes. Taylor (Charlton Heston) is throwing around gorillas with judo moves because they're people wearing ape costumes and that's the script. An accurate depiction of that fight would make for a shorter movie.

Understanding history and politics would be so much easier if the bad guys just called themselves The Legion of Doom.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions but the road we're on, paved with bad intentions, gets there faster.

After they read the 1963 novel Planet of the Apes and watched the 1968 movie Planet of the Apes, my students read Kafka's "Report to an Academy" this week. I guess I went ape about apes.

It sometimes works for writing novels

Two guys in their twenties sitting next to me at the airport and talking about how hard it is to DM D&D because you "have to remember so many mechanics and plan in advance for everything your characters do." So sage like I chatted with them a bit and gave them some pointers on how to try zero-prep.
