THIS IS ALL TO SAY: if you find yourself not seeing as many hand crafted artisans at the con(s) you frequent, that doesn’t mean they don’t exist, it might mean they didn’t get in! Good cons want your feedback, if you want more hand made, tell them! :)

Periodic reminder! I make all the prints on paper I sell by hand, each color individually, with screens I burn or blocks I carve and package them all myself. I don’t print my own shirts, however I have never hidden this fact and don’t lie and say I do! I use a vendor who lives in walking distance>

All my signs are hand written, my bigger stands are wire cubes covered in fabric, my print and sticker stands I bought, but the wooden ones I painted to be the right color. Tbh my table display probably only costed $500 tops and that’s of stuff accumulated over 10 years :) it can be done cheaply!

Oh last thing sorry, I don’t do my own shirts not because I’m lazy, but because I don’t have access to the appropriate equipment to make a good consistent product. It is much more crucial to me to make a good consistent product than it is to save a few bucks doing it myself with sub par tools!

PS: I think there’s a notion that if your table looks clean and polished that you used money to make it that way. My banners and tablecloths are just sublimated fabric, I had to cut out the non-square shapes and line and hem them all by hand. My boards are corrugated plastic I cut and upholstered>

I could probably make more if I outsourced more things, but it’s important to me to have at least a good chunk of my products be hand made by me (all my prints and all my fabric patches). This is a PERSONAL preference and not a dig on anyone who doesn’t! All I can do is hope my customers care as>

Much as I do about having the artist’s hand on stuff :) It’s also just me! I have no employees or assistants. It’s a lot of work for one guy! Integrity and quality are incredibly important to me, especially when the capitalists outside of indie circles seem to treat the concepts as archaic jokes.

Can approve it for quality before it goes out. It is extremely important to me that whatever I make looks nice, lasts, and satisfies the customer that the money they worked hard for and gave me for it was worth it. I try to source locally or within the USA whenever possible. It is however>

Important to remember that I (and most independent artists) do not make a whole piles of money doing this even if it seems like we do when we sell x amount at x con. We sustain ourselves, sometimes we can have nice things, but speaking for myself, I live quite modestly in a flyover state.

High to sell them. I share my US vendors freely in person or online with people I have a rapport with. You may think that’s selfish that I don’t share them freely, but I’m not a free sourcing machine πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ all the vendors I use I researched extensively for specifically my needs and I encourage others>

To do the same with their own needs in mind. I do not use companies who have reputations of wanting me (a gay trans person) miserable or dead. I do not use print on demand companies to fulfill my products and the single POD company I do use for one product that is made to order, I ship to me so I>

And who I have not only met in real life, but have done commercial freelance work for. I researched multiple printers for my shirts and have gone through 4 other shirt vendors before, and he is the best for price and quality. They print on 6oz B+C blanks, a high quality shirt similar to comfort>

Colors without the high price tag so I don’t have to raise my shirt prices to more than most people can afford. All the other products I make are by and large made in the USA with a couple of exceptions because some things are simply not made here, and if they are, I’d have to price them too>

I’m sure plenty of folks have gotten this email from Pirateship by now, essentially warning that carriers are switching to dynamic, algorithmic pricing that can change multiple times per week (and one presumes, multiple times per day, should said algorithm detect you are…perhaps doing a shop drop…)

I'll be closing up shop early on 9/2 to get everything packed before I head off for Indy Fur Con and my Guest of Honor appearance! Last chance for most of the sale items and for anything until October! stablercake.etsy.com #printmaking #silkscreen #linocut

It’s one of those things I take for granted that a person doing handmade prints when they technically don’t have to is probably not gonna use a technology that makes art for them, but if you ever wonder: No, I do not and will never use Gen AI for any reason. I can draw and write myself just fine :)

jess m. β˜•πŸ‚@jametc.bsky.social

Please be vocal about not using AI. We have to normalize it. No "I'm not going to say that because it should be assumed. I'm not going to give them this". We don't have time for that shit ideological shit right now. NOW is the time to capitalize on waning favorability. Ppl want human made
