This is great. It's nice to be reminded that some of the shit we take for granted is pretty god-damned amazing.

samuel mehr@mehr.nz

i am on a plane sitting next to a lady who looks 40ish and has informed me that this is her first time flying she is visibly excited. she asked the flight attendant how much a soda costs and was happy to learn that drinks are free on airplanes. she's taking lots of pictures. i love this for her

I know I'm in the minority here, but to me the fact that a 36 year old white Republican dude who works in public safety is even *considering* doing more research than a quick Tuesday scan for a capital "r" is A Good Thing.

This looks good and all, but it's noteworthy that we're at a point where we had Miami Vice in '85, then Miami Vice (2006), and now Miami Vice '85 - so named to differentiate this reboot from the reboot while signaling that it's set in '85, like the original, that's just Miami Vice (1985).

They imagine the mastermind behind some crazily convoluted collusion corruption conspiracy is both smart enough to keep every shred of evidence absolutely hidden and also dumb enough to be caught lying about going to a basketball game? Fucking idiots.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Klobuchar: "You got this guy who clearly thinks he's got this gotcha moment. And I am sitting there listening because I was the next one up, and starting to think to myself, it's not really major sleuth here, 'I just don't think Jack Smith would lie under oath that he hadn't been at the game.'"

Did you ever sit back, look around, and realize that you burned through all the fucks you have to give decades ago? In the folly of my youth I never would have imagined that we only have so many fucks that we can give.

"Rare Nintendo Game Found" could mean a new-in-box Family Fun Fitness Stadium Events has been discovered and is set to hit hit 200k at auction, or I opened a box labeled "90's clothes" and found my old copy of GoldenEye.

Obviously the worst part is the now obligatory Nazi dog whistle, but it's worth noting just how fucking stupid RFK Jr is. He's "Forest Gump gave a heavy sigh and tried to explain it again" stupid.

Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD@elizabethjacobs.bsky.social

RFK Jr. just said that immigration is to blame for the outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases in the U.S., not him.

It's a special kind of fucked up that I would be utterly unsurprised if the president of the United States further disrupted global physical and economic security in the service of a shitty, low-effort April Fool's Day gag.

I hate it when AI compliments me. No, CLAUDE, I don't "have good instincts," I have decades of experience and know what bad code smells like. Well, I do have good instincts, that's just not relevant right... look, just fix the damned code already. You're supposed to be good at this.

A) he's wrong and B) referencing train travel might not be the best way to connect with the average American.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Markwayne Mullin defends "show me your papers": "If you're here legally, there's nothing to hide. Most people already are walking around with a government-issued ID, meaning your Real ID or your driver's license. If you go board a train here, you gotta show your ID."

Everybody's shitting on this, but given how much video there is of these assholes having something that's explicitly machine-readable isn't a horrible idea. Are they going to do everything in their power to hide it? Yes, but that will just be more evidence of their fundamental lawlessness.

Ritchie Torres@ritchietorres.bsky.social

I am introducing the Quick Recognition (QR) Act, which requires ICE and CBP officers to wear uniforms featuring QR codes. When scanned, the code would generate a digital ID displaying the officer’s name, badge number, and law enforcement agency. ICE should be unmasked both physically and digitally.

This is SUPER important and something that a subset of old-guard GOP was VERY good at. They played the long-game with language and managed to cement very potent ideas in the national subconscious. As with anything else, interrogate your assumptions whenever you notice them - and try to notice them.

First Wordle Problems@fwordleproblems.bsky.social

Like if you’re (not you but a hypothetical “you”) typing the word “Democrats” and the word “feckless” is at the tip of your proverbial tongue? Someone somewhere has won. That association has become automatic.

Often I'll write a response on some social platform or other, sometimes spending a good amount of time on it, and then simply... not send it. Just "delete" and *pffpt* it's gone. Writing the thing helps me frame my thoughts and then I realize, no one else cares. This is enough. Move on.

What. The fuck. Is happening?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Greene: "I will praise Nancy Pelosi. She had an incredible career for her party. I served under her speakership in my first term in Congress and I'm very impressed at her ability to get things done. I wish we could get things done for our party like Nancy Pelosi was able to deliver for her party."

I want to play #TheOuterWorlds2 - my Game Pass sub started with the first one, after all - but I just don't have the time to find a comfortable home for another 77GB game right now. #DeadStaticDrive clocks in at 2.97GB - that's as good as free. Time for some 80's cosmic horror GTA.

So Johnson would agree that an AI generated video of someone picking up an AR-15, kicking down Trump's door, and shooting him with poo bullets that landed harmlessly as brown paintballs would also be making a satirical point, right? Not something to get flustered about, correct?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: What does it say that president released a video of him pooping on the American people? MIKE JOHNSON: You can argue he's probably the most effective person who has ever used social media. He's using satire to make a point. He's not calling for the murder of his political opponents.

Mad props for keeping it old-school. We don't need AI to trade in falsehoods, misrepresentation, and propaganda! All it takes is a complete lack of morality, empathy, or basic decency, a complicit, lazy, and codependent media, and an uncritical, captured audience! Easy peasy!

A terrific AFP fact check uses reverse image searches to expose how a White House video took scenes from Florida, Texas, South Carolina and Nebraska and lied that they showed "Chicago is in chaos." factcheck.afp.com/doc.afp.com....

Been thinking about ICE and masks. The masks make everything more dangerous. They make it easy to dehumanize the ICE agents and, worse, they make it easy for ICE agents to dehumanize and disassociate themselves. Anonymity helps contempt metastasize into depravity. 1/4

It's trite to say that "you don't wear the uniform, the uniform wears you," but there's truth there. You wear a uniform and you enter a symbiotic relationship with the organization that uniform represents. There's a reason why the alien/magical/sci-fi super suit trope is resonant. 3/4

And when you take off the mask, and the uniform, for the last time it's done with you, but you're not free from it. Tendrils of what you did and who you were in that mask, under that hot sun, have pierced you to your core. Our soldiers don't wear masks in war. ICE agents do, on city streets. 4/4

Mirrors show the mask. Store windows in the bright California sun don't reflect YOU beating someone, just a group of masked men. You're not cleaning someone's blood off your hands, or wiping it from your face - you're just taking off a mask, taking off the gloves. 2/4

Our military is trained to locate, engage, and destroy the enemy. They are very good at their job. We call them "warfighters" for a reason. You want them on the streets in "big cities." Who is the enemy? What is the war? Who are they fighting? Who do you want destroyed?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Comer: "We're gonna support doing this in other cities if it works out in Washington DC. We spend a lot on our military. Our military has been in many countries around the world for the past two decades walking the streets trying to reduce crime. We need to focus on the big cities in America now."

B -5: Kid is playing by themselves. I try to get some work done. B -3: I'm spotted. B -2: "Dada what are you doing dada?" B -1: Pause work. B 0: Bluey. B +1: "Bluey!" B +2: Kid is watching Bluey. I prepare to resume work. B +5: Kid is playing by themselves. I am watching Bluey. B +7: Next episode.

Magical tariff thinking is crazy. Things will not cost "a few dollars more" but will be offset by your "new, better, job." I want to visit the moon and I want my dad to be alive, but none of that shit's happening, either.

My cat's litterbox is currently in the far corner of the office. There is nothing more grounding than engaging in absurd and grandiose pontification only to have your thoughts disturbed by the sound of a cat taking a shit. I get it, everyone's a critic.
