New post: our basemaps got some refreshed water details thanks to our partners at @stadiamaps.com! Check it out on the blog: stamen.com/refreshing-n...
"Where Stadia Maps really stands out is the consistent quality, especially as you get more rural." LandSearch on why satellite image quality matters for land marketplaces. New customer story: stadiamaps.com/customer-sto... #BuildWithStadiaMaps
We believe in predictable pricing and customer support that doesn't box you in or cost you $50/month. You can now set usage thresholds in your dashboard and get notified when you approach your credit limits. And reach out to us at any time... for free.
weeklyOSM 843 is out, and the routing item is the one to read. dia-jules digs into why OSRM and similar routers stack up traffic light penalties at trunk road junctions, and how tagging traffic_light=signal at the stop line fixes it. weeklyosm.eu/archives/18880
MapLibre GL JS v6.10.0 is out. Markers now test terrain occlusion with a CPU ray walk over the DEM instead of a depth-buffer readback, dropping a GPU stall per marker while the map moves.
LandSearch is a real estate marketplace for land with hundreds of thousands of listings. They switched from Mapbox to Stadia Maps and use our satellite imagery as listing photos for rural properties where photos don't exist.
We just shipped a visual overhaul of water rendering in Stamen Terrain. More consistent coastlines, better detail at low zoom, and somehow smaller tile sizes than before. Before/after: Iceland, Norway, Scandinavia, Lake Ontario. h/t @stamen.com for the original cartography. #BuildWithStadiaMaps
weeklyOSM 842 is out and we got two mentions: our forward vs reverse geocoding explainer in the Software section, and our local meet-up sponsorships in Events. Plenty else in there worth a read. weeklyosm.eu/archives/18872
Martin v1.15.0 can bake hillshade from Mapzen normal tiles and trace contour lines from Terrarium tiles, served as MVT. Terrain shading moves server-side. Proud founding members of @maplibre.org
MapLibre GL JS v6.8.0: terrain drape output now samples through mipmaps, so draped layers stop shimmering at high pitch. Plus real load-time perf wins. Proud founding member of @maplibre.org
Most geocoding APIs give you one endpoint and call it done. We have three forward geocoding endpoints, each optimized for a different use case. Picking the wrong one shows up in your results quality and your bill. #Geocoding #BuildWithStadiaMaps
weeklyOSM 841 is up, covering SotM 2026 in Paris. Also inside: a Deutsche Bahn metadata cleanup project for German railway stations, and Denmark's September push to map accessible parking. weeklyosm.eu/archives/18849
The desire to leave Mapbox, MapTiler, or Google usually comes from different complaints, but the fix looks the same from our side: open formats, no telemetry, real migration docs and support, simple pricing, and much more.
MapLibre Martin now speaks DuckDB + GeoParquet. Skip PostGIS, serve vector tiles straight from analytical datasets. Async pooling, auto bounds, live query encoding. As proud founding members, we love seeing the ecosystem evolve this way.
Using Leaflet and want vector tiles? maplibre-gl-leaflet adds vector rendering without replacing your Leaflet setup. Same API, sharper tiles, custom styles.
71% of Earth's surface is water. We finally gave it the cartographic attention it deserves. New basemap update: smarter relevance for large lakes, cleaner ocean labels, centered lake label placement, and straits in the water_name layer. #Cartography #BuildWithStadiaMaps
weeklyOSM 840: iD tagging schema v7.1.0 brings new presets to iD, GoMap!! and Every Door, Proton joins the OSMF as a Platinum member, and the State of the Map 2026 posters are live. All via @weeklyosm.bsky.social weeklyosm.eu/archives/18836

New map layers by @stadiamaps.com coming to LEARN's Cartograf application in the fall. Love the "dark" layer for students to better see their "Simple Maps" (cartes schématiques) rather than using the old dull blank canvas! Other great map layer functions to follow. Can't wait!
Meetup costs like venue, food, and WiFi add up fast, and most sponsorships require a long form and submission process. If you're a paying Stadia Maps customer organizing a GIS or location-tech meetup, we'll cover up to $200, no forms, plus a real 14-day trial for attendees.
In Plaza de Santo Domingo, Murcia, Google routes around it. Valhalla, our routing engine, cuts straight through, built by a GSoC student with Valhalla's maintainers. Looks like we have some updates to do.
One of Stadia Maps' founders and COO, Ian Wagner, speaks twice at FOSS4G 2026 on Sep 1: a lightning talk on Valinor, extending Valhalla with Rust and WASM, at 14:15; then a talk on Ferrostar and real-time navigation challenges at 14:30. #FOSS4G2026 #FOSS4GHiroshima2026
weeklyOSM 839 is out. A hands-on comparison of BRouter, OSRM, and Valhalla for a real bike trip, a new traffic mirror relation proposal, and Warlok for finding top OSM contributors in your neighborhood. weeklyosm.eu/archives/18822
Sitio recently launched on iOS and Android. Built by overlanders, built on Stadia Maps. We love celebrating when our customers ship something real. Using Stadia Maps and going into production? Let us know. We'll help spread the news.
Zarrista brings 1.9–2.7× faster Zarr reads to Python. Being integrated into Zarr-Python so your existing code gets faster without changes. A win for raster-heavy workflows. #geospatial
Switching basemaps from MapTiler is usually a one-line style URL change since both run on MapLibre GL JS. You also pick up something MapTiler's terms don't allow: permanent caching of your geocoding results.

@heigit.org advances GeoAI through international collaboration with Prof. Dr. Wenwen Li and Prof. Dr. Song Gao. New research into multimodal geospatial data and disaster response.
Nobody notices a Mapbox bill creeping up until the invoice actually lands. If you're on MapLibre already, switching basemaps to Stadia Maps is about two lines of code, and customers have cut their bill by up to 90% doing it.
weeklyOSM 838: iD 2.42.0, Overpass API perf improvements, OpenClimbing 2.0, cycle routes, EV charging maps, eclipse tool. State of the Map 2026 countdown (Paris, Aug 27-30). Everything happening in OSM this week.
React Native devs who need a map? Install @maplibre/maplibre-react-native, set styleUrl with your key, drop in MapView. iOS and Android, one codebase.
Since late 2025, Google Maps Platform runs on subscription tiers ($100, $275, $1,200/mo), so outgrowing one tier is a step change in cost, not a gradual one. We compared the real alternatives, Mapbox, MapTiler, Protomaps, Radar, and us, honestly.
140 session recordings from FOSS4G Europe 2026 are live. If you missed it, catch up on the latest in open-source geospatial tools, data standards, and mapping community projects. #FOSS4GEurope
Victor Rotariu's Cool routing mode calculates street-level heat to help cyclists find cooler routes. Plus CoMaps, Organic Maps, and ohsome updates. Head to weeklyOSM 837 for the full roundup.
MapLibre GL JS 6.0 landed—16 breaking changes, ESM-only, WebGL2 required. Full independence from Mapbox achieved. Worth reviewing if you're on MapLibre.
MapLibre GL JS v5: Flat map to globe with setProjection({type:'globe'}). Add a GlobeControl for a user toggle. Configure sky layers. Full tutorial. ICYMI v6 is in pre-release.
weeklyOSM 836 | This week: OSM Skeleton tackles data quality, new mapping drives in 🇪🇺, and community highlights. Solid OSM digest for devs and mappers.
OpenLayers 10.10 shipped WebGL text rendering for vector layers, smoother tile drawing, and stricter WMTS/OGC tile grid limits. Good release if you're comparing WebGL rendering approaches for vector tiles.
Shadowmap by the numbers: 700,000+ monthly users, sunlight scores on Redfin and Willhaben listings, and more tile usage in the first half of 2026 than in all of 2025. So impressive that we highlighted them in a customer story!
No JavaScript, no SDK. Our Static Maps API returns a PNG from a URL. Drop it in an img tag, email, PDF, or server-side template. Markers, routes, and @2x retina included.

HeiGIT built a custom openrouteservice instance for the German Red Cross's Venezuela earthquake response. It pulls in live road blockage data from HDX plus OSM, so routes avoid damaged bridges and closed roads in real time.
A style that looks great in a screenshot can look completely different once it's rendering your actual data. Our Explore the Map tool shows our styles live across London, Berlin, Denver, and New Zealand, so you can check before you commit. #BuildWithStadiaMaps
Animating maps in After Effects with GEOlayers 3? Add a Stadia Maps XYZ source, paste your API key, pick a style. Toner, smooth, satellite. Same steps. This doc explains it all.
Thanks to @heigit.org, students recently learned how computer vision models get trained for humanitarian mapping, and why human verification still matters for data quality. Worth a read if you're thinking about AI plus crowdmapping for OSM data.
Store a geocoding result, and Mapbox or AWS charges you 6 to 8 times the normal query rate. Google mostly forbids it outright. Standard-tier Stadia Maps customers can cache results for the life of their subscription. No surcharges, no re-validation loops. #Geocoding #MapsAPI
