You know what killed (the joy of) open source for me? The endless stream of criticism from random people. The low pay wasn't a problem, as long as I found income elsewhere.

To those people who fear AI on autopilot will write worse code: It *can* write code better than you ever could dream of, in readability, organization. You just have to identify the principles to refactor your code, and now you can afford refactoring the entire codebase, eliminating all tech debt.

You just need to eloquently express what is "good code". If you don't know how to express what good code is, figuring out the words is your job.

What is Dad Mode? It's just Grok (mobile app) Voice mode with MCPs and Connectors like GitHub, Cursor, Email, Telegram, whatnot. Claude Voice is also pretty good but there is no GitHub connector. ChatGPT voice refuses to use plugins or MCPs.

If you're still coding without AI, tell me you're at least not browsing a bunch of random low quality blogs riddled with weird cookie banners, desperately hunting for a little fix to a little annoying problem, right? Right??

In 2019 I gave climate activism a real shot, joined Extinction Rebellion, glued myself to buildings, gave speeches at Helsinki's main library on climate science and crisis, marched on the streets. I quit all of that when I realized the climate crisis is a geopolitical deadlock.

Country A will not suddenly give up on fossil fuels unless country B does the same simultaneously, otherwise they give up global hegemony. Coordinating cross-cultural decisions with your competitor is not going to happen.

The alternative solutions that remained were few, geoengineering and space mining being one of them. I know most of you in Bluesky hate Elon, but he is absolutely correct that a smart mesh of Dyson sphere satellites at lagrange point is the solution to global warming.

The ratio of git conflict babysitting per actual development is a code architecture smell and (via Conway's law) an org chart smell.

"How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you" psalm 31:19 Fearing God means experiencing his goodness. You should only be "afraid" of God if you don't fear Him.

Maintaining critical software now comes with a security burden that has outgrown what any volunteer can reasonably carry. That's why we're upgrading our open source program from the Team plan to the Business plan, full protection for maintainers at no cost. socket.dev/blog/free-bu...

Friends of mine in all kinds of careers (legal, interior design, artists, developers, business) are either (1) sad and gloomy about losing their craft to AI, or (2) having a lot of fun doing more with less, with AI. It's all a matter of perspective and motivation.

My mom, who studied interior design in her 50s and learned how to use SketchUp to draw in 3D, is finally having the time of her life making a lot of her ideas come to life, for herself and for clients.

Former me loathed Rick Rubin. Now I'm realizing he was right and way ahead of his time.

How to survive in the AI information economy: you gotta be Rick Rubin maxxing. The thing he is bringing is not a set of mechanical skills (commoditized). What he is bringing is a unique set of tastes, perspectives, and values.

Me as a developer/designer: let's do a redesign. We'll inform the user with a tutorial, it'll be fine. Me as a user on an app I just opened: BLERGH NOOOO WHY DID YOU REDESIGN EVERYTHING. SKIP TUTORIAL SKIP SKIP SKIP

Jesus offers true freedom. It's a feeling that cannot be taken away, unlike the freedom to fulfill desires which is contingent on your ability and possibility to pursue those desires. The sweet presence of the Holy Spirit is freedom that cannot be taken away by anyone or anything external. 🤍

Lost your health? Still free. Lost money? Still free and happy. Sent to jail? Still free. Wherever you go, no one can take God away from within you.

Looking at some C++ code I wrote in 2008, all by hand, formatted manually, without vim. It's mind blowing I had the patience for all this. Comments everywhere. What was wrong with me, this code is impeccable.

DM me to get 50% off first month on Cursor.com This is an "ad" and I earn credits, but I also legit think that Cursor is a great way of writing code nowadays. Pay special attention to its cloud/web features ✨

1 million interdependent cells (about 33MB) in the browser with very high FPS. Gonna keep trying higher numbers until it breaks.

Well, it dies at 5M, and still works at 2M, so I guess this is currently on par (or better) than Excel. Also Google Sheets has a theoretical limit of 10M but in practice things crash before that.

AI has taken over open source, and the data is wild: • npm is now seeing 100k+ packages published per month • packages with em dashes in READMEs jumped from ~5% to 30%+ • AI is increasingly writing packages and choosing dependencies Awesome post by @staltz.com: socket.dev/blog/ai-has-...

socket.devAI Has Taken Over Open Source - SocketVibe coding at scale is reshaping how packages are created, contributed, and selected across the software supply chain

Proud to be working to improve the safety of FOSS ecosystems. It's also great to see this work so well resourced. Socket Security also offer free accounts for any Open Source projects - we give back to the commons

Today is a big day for @socket.dev. We raised a $60M Series C at a $1B valuation, led by Thrive Capital. 20,000+ orgs, 1.5M repos protected, 1,000+ supply chain attacks blocked per week. 3/5 FAANG companies are customers. We're just getting started.

My biggest struggle with AI coding is that I haven't answered these questions yet: (1) how can I reduce the time that it's idle (overnight, overweekend), and if that happens then (2) how can I keep up with the reviews?

It's certainly a tradeoff between productivity and control, and sometimes the context prescribes more productivity (e.g. building new products, getting to market fast) while sometimes it prescribes more control (code that cannot afford to be incorrect nor insecure).

Why does Anthropic not offer Claude in the cloud (Cowork in the cloud, scheduled tasks etc)? Why why why why why Why are they telling me to keep my macbook always awake why why.

Microsoft had this very handy app for scanning documents called Lens. I use it for years. I refrained from updating the software version out of fear they would paywall it. Well, guess what, I accidentally updated.
