The secret service interfering with commercial air travel, esp. the most dangerous parts, is not what I woke up expecting to read. The fact that this is not huge news can only be because of so much other huge news crowding it out.

Jeff Wise@jeffwise.bsky.social

Amid all the chaos in air travel, a major (bad) milestone has gone overlooked: For the first time, airliners flying in US airspace have come under electronic attack. I found the perp. You'll never guess who it was. nymag.com/intelligence...

Same guys will call it “leverage”, as offensive as it is to actual levers.

less than ten trans women tried to play collegiate sports and now the car dealership class gets to crash the global economy and set up sweatshops in the midwest

Adding to the sane voices asking the senate democrats to withhold their cloture vote. Amendments won’t make it, and a non-clean CR cedes power and, with it, whatever is left of the minority’s influence. The republicans provide a good example here and @schumer.senate.gov should listen to his voters.

The 12 monkeys sequel writes itself, no AI needed.

Josh Marshall@joshtpm.bsky.social

Reading an internal NIH guidance memo which basically says since we’re probably going to be shutting down labs with little or no notice just be sure to remember about the whole disposing of biohazard materials the right way thing. ☣️ 😬🤡

The real pizzagate. Chilling.

Lawrence Hurley@lawrencehurley.bsky.social

"several federal judges in the Washington D.C. area had received pizzas sent anonymously to their homes, which is being interpreted by law enforcement as a form of intimidation meant to convey that a target’s address is known." www.reuters.com/world/us/jud...

This is really something. Our guy running our government (i.e. into the ground) has some peculiar anger issues that don’t seem suitable for public life.

Elon’s busy schedule today is claiming astronauts were left in the ISS for political reasons, getting corrected by an ISS astronaut, throwing a fit where he calls the astronaut a slur, then complaining that we should deorbit the ISS

As their prices increase, and campaign promises look more like “suggestions,” I’m curious if there is any photographic proof that either T***p or M**k have ever purchased or prepared even a single egg themselves, any style, with or without toast.

Excellent thread on the US DOE - it’s again a reminder that the goal isn’t to save our money, but to wreck our society.

Karly Kingsley@karlykingsley.bsky.social

🧵 If you’re applauding the abolishment of the Department of Education, you need to do a little research. You have ZERO clue what the DOE actually does. Here’s a reality check on what the Department of Education actually does: (1/14)

And the moral here is that many scientific discoveries - especially paradigm shattering ones - are often accidents that happen while scientists are going about other business. The more you support their freedom, and the more perspectives you welcome in, the more benefit we get as a society.

Mark Cuban@mcuban.bsky.social

This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen. Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying “Why are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !” globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

I don't know the songs well at all but I was all in on the kendrick show - I presume there were less obvious diss targets than drake, too. And the USA imagery felt patriotic and subversive at the same time.

Been thinking about how the N**is contributed to 20th century technology and the first four that jump to my mind are: cars (VW), rockets (V2), big data (via IBM) and propaganda. It reminds me of something (& someone) and makes me wonder how we didn’t connect the dots sooner

Truly vile - the race to compliance is betraying vulnerable kids who need help.

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

NEW — I spoke to a staffer at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) about DOJ's threat to pull funding if the org didn't comply with Trump's DEI executive order, and how org leadership rolled over. "Rather than fight back, we chose to sacrifice trans children," they said.

Verifiable facts and a ghastly outcome.

➡️ January 20: FAA director fired ➡️ January 21: Air Traffic Controller hiring frozen ➡️ January 22: Aviation Safety Advisory Committee disbanded ➡️ January 28: Buyout/retirement demand sent to existing employees ➡️ January 29: First American mid-air collision in 16 years Making America Great Again!

I just subscribed - independent journalists are probably the only information sources who will survive the coming months intact.

NEW — OMB temporarily pauses all agency grants and loans programs. Per copy of memo: "The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve."

This is both shocking (the level of grift and the media acceptance of it at face value) and unsurprising (including the apparent lack of even implied outrage in the article).

Massad Boulos, President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming Middle East adviser and Tiffany Trump’s father-in-law, was known as a billionaire mogul. He’s actually a small-time truck salesman.

I was a 14 year old as this was happening and it was disorienting - pop music in 1984 seemed to explode into a wild mix of rock, rap, hair metal, dance, electronica, etc., enabled by mysterious technology I found riveting. Interesting to realize it wasn't just me being 14 -- but a real sea change.

nytimes.com‘You Can Never Look Back’: How ’70s Rockers Rebooted for the ’80sThe year 1984 was a watershed in pop music. The stars who’d made it big the previous decade had to embrace new instruments and MTV or risk being left behind.

It’s quite a list to check off. Going after Hunter was always a political hit job to weaken his father - the pardon just restores some balance to the universe and closes the chapter, at some level.

emptywheel@emptywheel.bsky.social

If your whine about the Hunter pardon does not account for: 1) Trump withholding appropriated $$ to get dirt on Hunter 2) Rudy soliciting dirt from known RU spy for same 3) Barr setting up side channel to ingest that 4) SOMEHOW informant framing Joe Biden with transparently false claim

Omg my teenager just gave me a present for my birthday (last week, but who’s counting?) - these two padded pouches which turned out to be “cases for your synthesizers, dad”. And which turned out to be exactly what I needed to get these guys (plinky, nts3 and crow) back to Brooklyn. ❤️🎹

One can only imagine why Hegseth’s mom had to apologize. It just makes the whole thing seamier.

Peter Baker@peterbakernyt.bsky.social

In an interview, Hegseth's mother disavowed the email, saying that she had apologized to her son for it and insisting that he is "a good father, husband." Sharon LaFraniere Julie Tate www.nytimes.com/2024/11/29/u...

Somehow one doesn’t want a run to end like this, but a series of unfortunate events this morning seems to have knocked out the last scheduled days of colliding lead ions (and their nearby electromagnetic fields) at the Large Hadron Collider this year. Drat.

Narrator: for Rudy Giuliani, it was far from his final act. At this rate, he'll be nominated for WH OLC by Monday

James Gleick@around.com

Given the barrage of dismal news, is it all right to enjoy the final act of this vile man, now left hanging in the wind? https://www.msnbc.com/top-stories/latest/rudy-giuliani-assets-freeman-moss-defamation-judgment-rcna180471
