October 21, 1942 | 1,327 Jewish men, women and children arrive at Auschwitz from Westerbork, in the German-occupied Netherlands After selection 497 men are admitted to the camp. The remaining 830 deportees, including all the women and children, are killed in the gas chambers.

#OTD: The Minsk Ghetto was liquidated on October 21, 1943. The Nazis had forced approximately 100,000 Jews into the ghetto and into forced labor. The majority were eventually murdered.

OTD in History: October 14, 1943 marked one of the most profound examples of Jewish resistance during the Holocaust when prisoners at the death camp Sobibor initiated a mass uprising. During the uprising, 11 SS staff members were killed.

Vilnius was once called the Jerusalem of the North. 76 years ago, on September 23-24, the Vilna Ghetto was liquidated. 95% of the Jewish community was murdered. Resistance leader Abba Kovner survived, and went on to form the original Avengers. I remember them all in I AM JUDEN.

Holland deported more of its Jews than any other country. Anne Frank was an exception, but ultimately met this fate. So did Hartog Roodveldt, born in Amsterdam in January 1932. #OTD 31 August 1943 he was deported from Westerbork to Auschwitz. After selection - murdered by gas.

Polish Jew Szmul Lewi Wajnsztejn was born in Sokołów. A tailor. During the war he lived in France. He arrived in a deportation at Auschwitz on 30 June 1942. Prisoner No 43667. He perished in the camp on 18 August 1942.

Wanda Rein married Mordechai Folman #OTD 17th August 1944 in the last wedding to take place in the Lodz Ghetto. One year after they were separated at Auschwitz, Wanda and Mordechai Folman were reunited; in 1950 they immigrated to Israel. Read their story: www.yadvashem.org/exhibitions/...

#OTD August 10, 1889, Zofia Kossak-Szczucka was born. She was a Polish writer and a World War II resistance member. She co-founded two Polish wartime organizations: The Front for the Rebirth of Poland and Żegota, to assist Polish Jews in surviving the Holocaust.

Elisabeth Abegg was a German schoolteacher and resistance fighter against Nazism, who during the Holocaust rescued at least 80 Jews from certain death She was named Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in 1967 & died #OTD August, 8, 1974 in Berlin.

Born #OTD 4 August 1912. Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg saved thousands of Jews in German occupied Hungary during the Second World War.

July 18th 1940, Chiune Sugihara began issuing transit visas to Jewish refugees in Lithuania. I write about this selfless diplomat in I Am Juden. Sugihara's brave efforts during the Holocaust earned him the distinction of Righteous Among the Nations.

21 July 1944 | Two prisoners, a Pole Jerzy Bielecki & a Polish Jew Cyla Cybulska escaped #Auschwitz. They were in love. Jerzy managed to get an SS uniform & staged a fake escort. The escape was successful.
