Excited to announce that after popular demand I have now created a space weather dashboard on my website, you can access it here: forecast.stephyardley.com π π°οΈ Suggestions welcome!
Updated my space weather dashboard π ποΈ this afternoon so it now includes coronagraph data from CCOR-2 and the auroral oval forecast from the Met Office! ποΈ forecast.stephyardley.com
Today's aurora and space weather 3-day forecast! π The 21 Oct CME never arrived, and slow solar wind means quiet conditions through Thursday π¬οΈ Biggest flare: C2.9 ππ₯ Auroraπ: unlikely in the UK over the next few days π ποΈ forecast.stephyardley.com #spaceweather #aurora
The Sun over the last 24 hours! π The most interesting feature on the Sun right now is the coronal hole (dark feature) that's just rotated around onto the solar disk from the east limb (left edge). This could lead to fast solar wind speeds at Earth & geomagnetic storm conditions later in the week! π¬οΈ
Today's aurora and space weather 3-day forecast! π Coronal hole wind π¬οΈ & a possible glancing CME ππ¨ποΈ may bring active spells today, chance of G1 storm Quiet Sun: biggest flare B5.7π₯, sunspots down to 51 π Auroraπ: chance in N. Scotland tonight π #spaceweather #aurora
Today's aurora and space weather 3-day forecast! π A weak solar wind boost may arrive today, π¬οΈ with a possible glancing CME Sunday ππ¨ ποΈ Biggest flare: C1.3π₯ Auroraπ: slight chance in N. Scotland tonight and Sunday night, if Storm Boelo's cloud clears π #spaceweather #aurora
Today's aurora and space weather 3-day forecast! π Fast wind from coronal hole CH04 brings a chance of minor (G1) storms today π¬οΈ Settling Thursday, quiet Friday. Solar activity is low, with a 25% chance of M-class flares π Aurora: slim chance in N. Scotland tonight if clear π #spaceweather #aurora
I've developed a new dashboard based on my solar wind connection research βοΈπ It tells us what is the source of the solar wind currently hitting Earth. We're most likely linked to coronal hole CH04+ (a dark patch on the Sun), and solar wind from the CH is starting to arrive. Aurora possible! π
Today's aurora and space weather 3-day forecast! π Fast solar wind from coronal hole (CH04) arrives today π¬οΈ Chance of minor (G1) storms, unsettled into Wednesday. No significant flaring recently but there is a 30% chance of M-class flares π Aurora: possible in northern Scotland tonight π
The Sun over the last 24 hours! π We can see the coronal hole (dark feature) rotating across the solar disk that will lead to a high-speed solar wind stream arriving at Earth shortly. To the west (right) of the coronal hole we can see a filament becoming unstable, lifting off and erupting ππ¨
This is the region to watch! π Although Active region 4551 hasn't done much so far, it is still emerging. Not much flaring as its only emerging slowly, but hopefully some eruptions in the decay phase if the magnetic fields become more sheared and build up some energy? π€ π π¨ π°οΈ ποΈ
Aurora forecast this weekend! π We have two possible CMEs arriving (glancing blows) and a high-speed stream from a coronal hole, which means the aurora may be enhanced between 10-13 Oct. Sightings mainly in northern Scotland with clear skies. G1 (minor) storm conditions, maybe G2 (moderate) π π¨ π°οΈ ποΈ

As expected, the Prime Minister's promise to sort out the mess of funding for Jodrell actually meant nothing - it seems the government would like it to be some sort of heritage theme park when you can go and see where we used to do science. π
'The University of Manchester is seeking alternative funding sources to keep scientific work at Jodrell Bank going after hearing that lost UK Research and Innovation funding would not be restored despite interventions by the prime minister.'
Aurora update π Here's the latest eruption from the Sun π 3 CMEs (6, 7 & 8 Oct) π π¨ π¨ π¨ π°οΈ ποΈ could reach Earth 9-11 Oct. The Met Office forecast has a chance of G2 storms and a slight chance of G3, so aurora is possible over Scotland, and possible northern England. Timing is very uncertain, so π€

Check out our latest paper that was published today in Nature Astronomy on the origins of switchbacks in the solar wind ππ¨π°οΈ
Solar Orbiter tracks the origin of the Sun's mysterious magnetic switchbacks βοΈ Back in 2022, Solar Orbiter spotted a kink in the solar windβs magnetic field known as a βswitchbackβ and confirmed it to be S-shaped: something scientists had predicted but not seen directly. π π§ͺ

Wow impressive images of the Earthβs aurora taken by the recently launched SMILE mission π€©π°οΈ
Inspector Smile is ready for science! π«‘ This is Smileβs first ultraviolet view showing an auroral substorm. With the ultraviolet camera now operational, Smile becomes the first spacecraft since 2008 to capture the full ring of northern lights around the north pole in ultraviolet light. π π§ͺ βοΈ

Calling all #eclipse and geeky data science lovers! Check out this fantastic timelapse that displays the changing temperature relative to the %age of sunlight. I'm sure you'll all agree with me that this is <chef's kiss> marvellous! Bravo to Wayne!
Finished my eclipse video. Yellow line is how much the Moon is covering the Sun (%), red line is the "in the sun" temperature, blue line is the shade temperature. Box at top right shows the view of the Sun through a telescope as the eclipse progressed. Times in Universal Time.
