I was playing some Christmas songs on my piano in my office last night while my three year old was playing with my desk. of course my apple watch unlocks my mac while my he is playing with my keyboard, so all sorts of interesting 'code' to undo this morning when I started work :)

I switched to a new keyboard about 10 days ago, then I immediately went to re:invent so this is really only my second day using it. The weirdest thing is actually having the cmd and option buttons in the right place!

I do like the copilot integration for rider / intellij, one comment though, and this might not be something fixable atm, it would be nice if the copilot auto-complete also did the imports for you (like the regular autocomplete does).

Packing for re:invent, first time traveling alone in a couple of years, have to say it's nice that now my laptop/phone/gaming console/kindle all use the same charger. Only need a lighting for my airpods and the charger for my Apple watch, so 3 chargers, not so bad (2 if I upgraded my airpods)

My 3 year old has preschooler wipe clean book (basically a book with basic skills and a dry erase marker) It seems odd to me that “dry erase” markers are much harder to read once they dry 🤔

usually, when an #oss contributor opens a PR to a project I maintain without tests, I just write them myself. The contributor's given up enough of their time, and if I don't understand their contribution enough to write the tests. . . I shouldn't be merging it anyway.

Debugging a bug in Redis OM #python last week. I encountered this odd situation where the defaults for child classes using pydantic v2 models were being ignored, and instead was defaulting to the type we use to intercept lambda's for forming queries to Redis. I found a workaround, but this feels 1/

github.comBUG: Default Values in Model Are Incorrectly Set as 'ExpressionProxy' Objects · Issue #669 · redis/redis-om-pythonWhen defining default values in a JsonModel, these values are unexpectedly being set as ExpressionProxy objects instead of the intended default values. Expected Behavior: Default values defined in ...

Like one of those instances where I'm missing something fundamental. I made sure the MetaModel's model_fields have the correct information. Does anyone know exactly how #pydantic chooses what's going to be the default of a particular field?

Really great tip if you don’t own your own domain!

Developers, do you want to verify yourself here but don't have a personal domain? You can use your GitHub account! 🦋🐱 I temporarily renamed myself to @nicolo-ribaudo.github.io :)

For those who celebrate. Not that I’ve had 30 consecutive free minutes where I’ve had the mental faculties to sit down with my SteamDeck since my second kid was born 😂.

With Redis 8, there is a return on investing in the community edition (the code you just download from Github), probably what made this possible is the license change. Anyway interesting new features / improvements: redis.io/blog/redis-8...

O(N) in the size of the Result Set (the documents sent back to you). So, that's why we default to 10, we want some relatively small constant - which in strict time-complexity terms - removes the O(N) (as N is a constant), now you're bound to the access complexity of the index O(1) or O(log(N))

You can expand your page size with the LIMIT sub-command on FT.SEARCH e.g. LIMIT 100 200 goes to offset 100 in the result set and returns the next 200 documents. In Redis OM #dotnet one of the things I did was create enumerators that automagically paginate over the result set so you don't have to.

Then when using FT.SEARCH to query your data you use the RediSearch query syntax to build a filter for your documents. FT.SEARCH forces you to think about how you're going to paginate your data, because by default it only returns the first 10 records matching your filter. Why's that you might ask?

Well, at Redis, we measure execution times in microseconds not milliseconds, by default anything that exceeds 10ms is considered "slow", and we want to be as aggressive as possible in servicing queries. The way indexes are structured in RediSearch, the time complexity of a query is:

First, for data modeling, you use FT.CREATE to create a secondary index on top of your data in Redis (either hashes or JSON). You need to consider the documents you want to index (we use prefixes for your keys to determine what you're indexing), then you specify precisely which fields to index.

I really like @jetbrains.com's products, but something mildly annoying, frequently when my mac goes to sleep and I wake it back up my IDE's are frozen and need to be force-quit, e.g. just woke my mac up and Pycharm and RustRover were frozen. Anyone else seen something like this?

To be fair, I maintain projects across several languages, so I treat my jetbrains IDE instance like Chrome Tabs 😂. I've tried several fixes online to no avail. Mostly seems to happen to Pycharm and Rider.

I currently have only one feature request:

To be clear, we do have plans for scaling, we just kinda expected more than a couple days notice before getting blasted with a million new users a day. The team is rapidly deploying fixes and new software to adapt. More servers in the mail.

Was looking at a thread I was writing to in slack last night from my phone, Apple autocorrect changed the word "deserialization" to "destabilization" and I didn't notice. Completely changes the meaning of what I was trying to say!

As a recovery windows developer who’s built a half-dozen machines, im a little embarrassed, but those M4 Mac minis seem extremely compelling. My full size tower feels like it takes up to much space, and I haven’t really used that darned graphics card in the last year.

Feels to me like starter packs are Bluesky’s contacts crawler - way to dramatically accelerate growth of the social graph and scale the platform quickly and with relevance. If this ends up being the X-killer, they may be a large reason why.

This might really be it

WOW! More people are visiting Bluesky than Threads, even though Bluesky has far fewer users and isn’t linked to the world’s largest social network. Incredible. Story here: www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-ne...
