I'm in the middle of reading this now, and it really is outstanding! I can't believe it's taken me this long to get around to reading this book.

I highly recommend "Screened Out" by Richard Barrio. Barrios had access to studio records, censor notes, scripts, drafts and dialogue and scenes that were cut. My favorite cut line is from All About Eve: Addison DeWitt tells Eve, "Eisenhower isn't half the man you are."

We've all heard the right wing claim about the *liberal media* but the truth is that right coded zillionaires own most of the media we consume. Just look at this list of what the Ellison's now own. It's astounding & very concerning. (h/t @thedesk.net)

On Monday I'm giving a Zoom talk with video clips about the evolution of LGBT images on 20th-century TV. The event is sponsored by CBST in New York, and all are welcome to register by clicking the itty-bitty "Register" link at the end of the program description. 😀 cbst.org/eventdetails...

Greetings from beautiful — and wonderfully walkable — downtown Chicago, where the International Voices Project theater festival begins tomorrow night (Tuesday) at the Instituto Cervantes. One of my theater translations will have a professional staged reading as the opening night feature. 😃 🎭🍿

For years, we've seen headlines saying that Trump's approval rating has fallen to an all-time low. And no matter how often it happens, when I check the number, it's always around 35%. What higher mathematics are involved in a number staying the same while plummeting? What do the headlines refer to?

It always amazes me that these gay characters were on a UK sketch-comedy series week after week in the *1960s*. We had nothing comparable in the US. The nearest thing was Alan Sues's gay-coded characters on "Laugh-In." I have a few albums of Julian and Sandy sketches but I'd not heard this one.

The folks freaking out about "racially implausible" casting in Nolan's "The Odyssey" are probably the same people who love it when Jesus is portrayed by a pasty actor who looks like his name ought to be Sven.

📺 July 13, 1984: “Brothers” debuted on Showtime. Pay cable’s first original sitcom starred Paul Regina as a man who left his bride at the altar on their wedding day, only to reveal to his 2 older brothers (Robert Walden and Brandon Maggart) that he's gay. 115 episodes were produced over 5 seasons.

A side note: Although these specials aired in prime time in a fairly censored era, in 2026 YouTube won't let me monetize this video, apparently because CBS insisted on showing S&M gear (in its eagerness, in 1980, to link the Gay Rights movement to kink and to supposed moral dangers to children).

A 5-hour YouTube video?! Yup, but it's by @mattbaume.bsky.social and is therefore worth watching from start to finish, even if you have to view it in installments. Smart, entertaining, and important.

Last weekend of Pride month -- a perfect time to celebrate how far we've come & look to the future! Get out your poppers, invite your friends, and settle in for five hours of of raw uncut Pride:

I guess I should have bumped this yesterday...

TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY Raquel Welch appeared on THE DICK CAVETT SHOW on 6/25/1970, talking about her starring role playing a trans woman in the notoriously awful film MYRA BRECKENRIDGE. Of course, there's video... #LGBTQ #trans #queer

June Lockhart seems to have been such a lovely person, and here she replies beautifully to Graham's antigay remarks. What has surprised me since I posted this video is how many people in the comments assume that Rev. Troy Perry is heterosexual and a Catholic priest. No idea why they assume that!

This post is unavailable.

Was just in two shops where the twentysomething-year-old workers were completely unfamiliar with the terms "humidifier" and "vaporizer." Are these no longer a common thing? Or are they now called something fanciful like a "steam-o-breather"?

I love good queer romance films, and this week I really enjoyed a very sweet gay-teen romance I saw for the first time: the Brazilian film "The Way He Looks" (2014). Very well made (though I have doubts about the plausibility of the final scene).

My fellow cis folks, The FCC is asking Americans to submit comments about whether the TV Oversight Management Board (TVOMB) should create new TV ratings to alert viewers to trans/gender content. Time to be an ally and tell the FCC absolutely the fuck not. It takes five minutes to do.

glaad.orgTell the FCC that LGBTQ Stories Don’t Need a Warning Label | GLAADThe Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is targeting LGBTQ stories. They are trying to control what you see on television. This government overreach is dangerous...

"Luddite" doesn't mean "fuddy-duddy who can't grasp tech and dislikes anything new." Luddites were workers-rights activists who, when industries developed machines to replace workers, broke in at night and smashed the machines. UK then made machine-smashing a capital crime and started killing them.

I hate the insinuation that a corporation not celebrating Pride implies bigotry. It feels awfully close to "If you refuse to celebrate Christmas, you just hate Christians." There are plenty of companies whose owners and leaders actively wish us harm. Surely those should be our priority.

Corporatization of Pride and the proliferation of token corporate celebrations are among the worst things to happen to Pride, because this partly transfers control and ownership away from the community. We created Pride for ourselves, not in order to sell cars or financial planning services.

Banality of evil: Just found out the guy I've sat next to at lunch off and on for a few months is a Trumpster who revels in every kind of cruelty, lawlessness, torture, and death. He has the luxury of seeing it as theoretical since he believes (falsely, I hope) that none of it will happen to him.

June is designated #PrideMonth in countries around the world, marking the anniversary of the Stonewall riots in June 1969. Pride celebrates the progress we have made over the last 57 years but it also reminds us that the struggle is not over. Far from it.

What was it like to be a lesbian activist in 1965 on a TV talk show? What ridiculous questions were they asked? And how did audiences react? Check out my 1991 interview with pioneering lesbian activists Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, who founded the Daughters of Bilitis in 1955. youtu.be/HYIuh98-hWo

If you're a white neo-Nazi Republican politician who truly believes that ethnic and cultural "replacement" is a bad thing that needs to be undone... Why not lead by example and go back to wherever the hell your people came here from?
