The bear ambled across the Picnic Park, but then stopped when he smelled something. He lifted his nose sampling the air, then snuffled in the grass until he found it. It was a small biscuit that smelled mouthwateringly delicious. He looked left and right. (1/3) #wss366

Brunhilde landed on his shoulders and put her feet around his neck. "Hey! Hey!" Brunhilde said. "You found my trail!" "What are these!" the bear asked. "They're delicious." "Yappy's Dog Treats," she said. "Liver and tuna, with just a #hint of cheese." (3/3) #wss366 (With apologies to Weird Al).

Then he put his nose down and snapped up the tasty morsel. It was wonderful! He smelled another a few feet away, so he went that way and ate it too. There was a whole trail of them that led around the big rock. When he reached the rock, something dropped on him from above. (2/3) #wss366

The Mayor of Volpex One stayed in her office late into the evening reviewing the budget. Screen after screen, she checked the numbers of last year's numbers, the proposed budget, and this year's actuals. It was tedious, but it was the only way to really understand what was happening. (1/3) #wss366

There was a proposal to install grills at the Volpex Picnic Park. Just the other night, she had watched the Butter Angels demonstrate what a "cookout" was. What a concept! It was a such small amount of money -- practically just a rounding error. "What the puk'," she said. "Why not?" (3/3) #wss366

On the last screen, she looked at proposed new items and winced at how much over budget they already were. With a #stroke of her stylus, she regretfully eliminated projects. A starport expansion, gone. A school renovation, postponed for a year. Then her stylus hovered over the screen. (2/3) #wss366

If you're at World Fantasy this weekend, It looks like they have a few of my books at the Water Dragon Publishing table. They're way at the right of the table, in the back, turned so only the spines are visible. But they have A Familiar Problem, Revin's Heart, and The Third Time's the Charm.

Forrest landed on an unoccupied table at the Volpex Picnic Park. "Lunchtime!" he called to the bear. The bear turned toward the workshop, where the Ranger used the big maintenance replicator to prepare his meals. "Hey! Hey!" Brunhilde said. "What are you going to have for lunch!" (1/3) #wss366

"My mom got me a Fun Meal with peach cobbler for dessert!" Brunhilde said proudly. "I'll probably just have the usual," Forrest said. "Some dead rats, rabbits, quail, and squirrels." "Ew," Brunhilde said, now looking a little green. "I think I just lost my appetite." (3/3) #wss366

"I'm not sure what the Ranger will have for me," the bear replied. "Yesterday, I had twenty trout, a bushel of pears, a dozen sweet potatoes, and a few quarts of raspberries, blueberries and cherries." "You ate all that yesterday?" Brunhilde said, eyes huge. "Oh, that was just lunch." (2/3) #wss366

The bear relaxed behind the big rock smoking a cigarette. "Hey! Hey!" Brunhilde said. "What's a word that rhymes with owl?" The bear took a puff from his cigarette as he considered her question. "Why do you want to know?" he asked, finally. "I'm writing a poem about Forrest." (1/2) #wss366

"How about 'scowl'?" the bear proposed. Brunhilde giggled. "Growl? Howl?" She laughed harder. "Fowl? Cowl? Towel?" "Towel! Perfect!" she said. "The owl in the towel wore a scowl!" "How about 'The owl on the rock bit their fingers off!'" Forrest said. He clacked his beak menacingly. (2/2) #wss366

Genie trudged into Mama-san's izakaya. "Irasshai," Mama-san said, from behind the bar. Genie sat at the bar and looked down at her hands. "I'm depressed, Mama-san," Genie said. "Make me something sweet." "Hai, hai." (1/3) #wss366

She filled a shaker with crushed ice, poured a shot of bourbon, then added dry curacao, sweet vermouth, and pineapple juice. At first listless, Genie watched with growing interest. Mama-san shook up the cocktail, strained it into a class, and dropped in a cherry. (2/3) #wss366

She placed it in front of Genie and, only then — right under her nose — added the lemon #zest. "Dozo, Talia-san! A *serenade* to awaken your senses." Genie sniffed it, then raised the glass to take a sip. "Ah!" she groaned. "This is perfection." (3/3) #wss366

A party of guests entered the izakaya and approached the bar. There were five in the party. Four humorless young women wore black military fatigues and carried railguns. In the center was a small, blue, bear-like creature with a pink tummy. (1/5) #wss366

The Barlek strained to reached over the bar to take the glass. He downed it in one swallow, then settled back. "Ah!" he said licking his lips. "Pukkin' good fek!" Then he crumpled forward unconscious. (4/5) #wss366

The guards hoisted the Barlek up on their shoulders and prepared to carry him out. "Does this happen often?" Mama-san asked. "Every pukkin' day," the sergeant said. (5/5) #wss366

Mama-san had read that the Barlek, the CuddleTum ambassador from Carolot, was visiting Volpex. "Irasshaimasse," Mama-san said, bowing. The Barlek climbed up a bar stool and sat at the bar, his head barely peeking over the counter, while his guards remained vigilant. (2/5) #wss366

"Splice the mainbrace!" he barked. "That means," said the guard with sergeant stripes, "that the Barlek requests a double ration of rum." But Mama-san was already pouring the double shot. "Dozo," she said, placing it in front of the elderly CuddleTum. (3/5) #wss366

Totemo Isogashii and Lambda were out for their morning run when they heard shouting to their left. An alarm began to shrill. Two men ran out of a butcher shop, straight into their path. "Stop! Thief!" yelled the butcher, waving a cleaver. One of the men turned and drew a gun. (1/4) #wss366

Without breaking #stride, Totemo vaulted over the fallen man and slammed into the other, who fell tumbling head over heels onto the street. Police sirens screamed and cruisers converged on the scene. The two men were arrested. (3/4) #wss366

"You're my heroes!" said the butcher, and lavished them with two thick, prime, porterhouse steaks. "Is non-replicated that much better?" Totemo wondered, as they walked home. Lambda, leaving a trail of saliva droplets, barked in affirmation. (4/4) #wss366

Totemo reached for her Marcus 407 — the sidearm she carried in the field. But she didn't bring it on her morning runs and found herself grasping at nothing. Lambda rammed into the back of the armed man's knee He crumpled to the ground. Then she grabbed the man's wrist in her jaws. (2/4) #wss366

After the battle, the knights returned. "Did you see what happened to the guy with the #lance?" said one. "Was he the one that got struck by the ballista?" "No! That guy was carrying a pike." "I'm not sure I saw anyone with lance," said another. "I saw several with spears, though." (1/2) #wss366

"No!" the first said. "It was very clearly a lance. He was riding that big charger." "Oh, come on! There were like 50 big chargers! Was it destrier? A warmblood? A percheron?" "This guy had red vambraces…" "Now we're getting somewhere! But what kind of red? Crimson? Scarlet? Carmine?" (2/2) #wss366

Two little girls were drawing with crayons while their mothers watched. Then a man walked into the room. "Look at my drawing, daddy!" a little girl said. "Is that a capybara?" he said, carefully inspecting the drawing. "Or a thylacine?" "No!" she squealed. "It's a horse, daddy!" (1/3) #wss366

"A horse! But horses are unguligrade! This is clearly a digitigrade animal." He knelt down, picked up a crayon, and started to sketch a skeleton. The girls watched raptly. "On a horse, the joints are backward from what you'd expect." (2/3) #wss366

He pointed at features on the drawing. "See? This isn't the ankle. This, up to the hock, is all foot. And way up here is the #stifle — or what you'd call the knee." "Is he always like this?" whispered one mother to another. "Yes…" she sighed. "One of the risks of marrying a biologist." (3/3) #wss366
