Really audacious to include "human reviewers" as an increased "cost" for academic publishers: "Trying to sort wheat from a mountain of chaff has increased costs for publishers, both in terms of technology and human reviewers."

In bittersweet news, this will be my last year at KCL - next summer, I will be taking up the Merilees Chair for the Study of Democracy at UBC. I will miss DPE, which has been an incredible intellectual community, and I hope to keep strong ties to London. politics.ubc.ca/news/steven-...

Not only is it obviously fraud, but fake citations were never even remotely a thing pre-AI. We all knew what the norms were, we all knew how to do our jobs. So I don't see how this can even be a debate.

We have also always embraced new technology where it enabled us to do our job better. I think it is pretty shocking how many people are instead embracing technology to not do their job at all.

so the entire productivity puzzle is the government undercounting how many people went on holiday?

Please excuse me while I scream into a cushion at the thought of ALL the articles I had to write on the "UK productivity puzzle" in the 2010s www.ft.com/content/c819...

Wtf do the government want from us here!? They plainly, *plainly*, do not actually want international students. Their whole line of policy for years has been making it more difficult for such people to come here or stay after they graduate! Why are they also out here encouraging us to attract more!?

Chris Parr@chrisjparr.bsky.social

Some groans in room at UUK 2026 when Jacqui Smith said the UK continues to be welcoming to international students. She responds by saying that universities need to “get out there and argue the case” for the UK as a destination, particularly compared to some other countries.

Good. We kept teaching mathematics after the invention of the electronic calculator.

Good for my alma mater. I think it tells us something that it’s elite schools like Chicago that are adopting the strictest anti-AI policies. chicagomaroon.com/53262/news/s...

Seems pretty obvious that the skills that analog reading, discussion, and writing enable are even more important in an age of AI. It will be trickier to preserve the essay, although for much of their history, evaluation in social sciences and philosophy was primarily exam-based anyway.

Just finished a week of research in Berlin on anti-Nazi resistance networks. Many discoveries but easily the most moving was this: A small paper flower a resistance organiser crafted in Luckau prison and included in a letter to his daughter – 1936

Everyone faces pressure. Pressure comes from employers to work more hours, from societal expectations to lose weight, from the government to leave the country, and from family to have children. My new book considers when pressure invalidates consent, and how we can make consent more voluntary. 1/3

Having now read the Atlantic piece, it seems there are two articles rolled in here, one that makes an excellent point about the hypocrisy of elite uni's anti-racism + union bashing, another, not very good, that makes a bunch of extreme inferences from experiencing academic hiring on the inside.

Many good points on the absurdity of extreme DIE face-saving, but I also think some odd assumptions from a few cases of seeing the strange judgement of other faculty on search committees - I feel like I was told quite early that faculty searches are often, but not always, pretty flawed and random

I am only partially caught up on the Cambridge affair, but the defense that "you would find similar plaigarism in everyone's work!" is insulting to the hard work of everyone in academia who strive to produce original, rigorous research.

big part of right now is companies trying to convince us that pedestrian and mid content is actually sophisticated. but then there is also something pedestrian about constantly pointing that out. if you treat nolan's odyssey as what it is - a big dumb summer blockbuster - your life will be great.

think about how much media content is "prestige-washed" - high production values, big name stars, the right "hot button" issues, lauded hype - all to cover up the fact that it is soapy melodrama

Very happy to be joining Loubna El Amine as the new political theory co-editors at Perspectives on Politics. Perspectives has been a vital forum for broad-minded political theory, and we're looking forward to continuing that tradition. Send us work that you're excited about!

Due to the state of the global job market, our faculty has been able to hire many excellent scholars who are overqualified for junior posts and so able to quickly get promoted. In true British HE brain fashion, their success has now become"problem" that the university needs to solve.

The ECB just hiked into an oil price shock, again. In our new paper for the EP Monetary Dialogue, we argue that this needs to stop. 🧵 If inflation is a function of the energy mix (✅) and the energy mix a function of monetary policy (✅), then even a narrow reading of the ECB’s mandate ... 1/

the whole theory of politics at work here — we can co-opt the far-right and box them out of mainstream politics and then reap the political windfall — is a total failure.

right, you don't get credit for your left-leaning actions when the most visible part of your tenure involves you pandering to the far-right at every opportunity

It's weird that the current centrist "why don't people like Starmer despite all his achievements" discourse completely ignores Mandelson and Epstein. Maybe part of the issue is that the labour right had some terrible people in it!

I think a lot of people are happy with this - they just don't see it as a product of Starmer, who has largely ran away from most of these achievements, and then suspended the whip over 2-child, banned palestine action, and gone hard right on immigration.

George Eaton@georgeeaton.bsky.social

The Starmer government was one of the most left-leaning we’ve had that was almost never identified as such.

It's odd that people think Starmer should get credit for things he has barely talked about or himself taken credit for even as he has repeatedly tried to move to the right on a whole host of hot button issues.

Well, that was fun! We organised the second Graduate Conference on Political Theory last week and it was such a great day. Thank you to all panellists, the senior academics who helped by chairing panels, and to Dr Bernardo Zacka for a most creative and engaging keynote! @kingspoltheory.bsky.social
