Got this Samsung battery pack thing. Pretty straightforward – two USB-C ports, charge level LEDs and a little button. I assumed both ports were OK for both in and out, otherwise they’d be labelled differently, wouldn’t they? (Looking at you, Apple)

So I did. Of course there were big text links for FONES and TELLYS and COMPUTOR and so on. Away in the corner was a small ‘support’ link, which led to ‘user manuals’. It asked for the product code – fair enough. It’s clearly visible on a sticker on the box.

So I peered at it, memorised it, and typed it in, and then I could read the manual. After I downloaded it. You are already putting a big sheet of paper in the box, Samsung. How about a legible user manual? JFC

It was legal stuff, mainly how to correctly dispose of the product you’d only just bought, in dozens of languages, in tiny font. In the middle of the English section I read: Visit Samsung dot com to find your instruction manual.

I have this very specific weird recollection from the late twentieth century, of putting the plug in the bathroom sink, then turning a tap on, and the water from the tap just *stayed in the sink*, instead of draining away slowly like it does these days. That can’t be right, can it?

Unearthed a BFI DVD of Patrick Keiller’s ‘Robinson in Space’ in a Tyvek sleeve. Unexpected, but what’s really intriguing is – it’s a LoveFilm* disc. Maybe I had it out when they ceased trading? Surely I’d have returned it anyway? *DVD rental by post, like Netflix’s original model

Some ruling covers there.

Five years after starting with Herbert Clyde Lewis's little masterpiece, Gentleman Overboard, the Recovered Book series from Boiler House Press keeps chugging along. We don't get the exposure that fancier series get and we're happy if we can sell 300 copies instead of 3,000. But we're still at it.

I once described a big swirling gathering of gulls as ‘du Maurierish’ but nobody knew what I was on about, so that went well.

Gollancz often loved to make up words and this is one of my favourites, so much so that I had it made into a t-shirt.

Oh fucking heck, I was just thinking THIS AFTERNOON, “Which Alien cast members died?” and I actually thought Tom Skerritt died a few years ago, leaving only Sigourney Weaver and Veronica Cartwright. Ugh.

The Underground isn’t as extensive as ‘U.K.’s famous tube system’ suggests.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced an initiative aimed at compelling passengers loudly playing music or streaming shows to put on headphones or risk being removed from U.K.’s famous tube system and double-decker buses.

Even the slightly more positive bridge* – “And she says I’ve come to set a twisted thing straight” – rears up into “As she takes my wrist I feel her imprint of fear”. None of this was helping me relax and look out of the window. *is that right? Bridge?

Watching a rather jolly documentary on ‘90s ska, I tried to remember which TV character had been in a high school band called Nostraskamus – Amy Santiago from Brooklyn Nine-Nine or Liz Lemon from 30 Rock. Neither, it turns out; it was Rachel from Master of None.
