“When you have reached your own room, be kind to those who have chosen different doors and to those who are still in the hall”. Julia, a second-year Geography student, tells us about C.S. Lewis’s 'Mere Christianity' for the #NationalYearofReading2026

What better way to celebrate #InternationalLiteracyDay than by looking back at our first ever St John’s Literary Festival in May? With a range of talks, workshops and performances for adults and children, this was a wonderful community celebration of the power of stories.

Nearly 400 years ago, St John’s threw a sumptuous feast for King Charles I and the royal court to celebrate the opening of Canterbury Quad. Astonishingly, the food and entertainment cost nearly half as much again as the entire building project!

A huge thank to Professor Lady Sue Black & @stjohnsox.bsky.social for last week's Beatrice Blackwood Lecture. We were all riveted by Sue's fascinating talk about real forensic anthropology (not as depicted in films or TV!), followed by drinks in the beautiful grounds. Thank you for a lovely evening.
